HINGE FOR VEHICLE-DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Dec. 21,1915.
Application filed July 23, 1914. Serial No. 852,623.
This invention is particularly adapted for use as a hinge supportfor the doors of vehicles such as automobiles, the object of the invention being to produce a device of the character described having features of novelty and advantage.
In the drawings Figure l is a view of a hinge made in accordance with my invention showing its manner of applicatiomthe hinge being illustrated as in the open position of the door. Fig. 2 is an end view of the hinge itself, showing the two leaves closed. Fig. 3 is a side view of a stationary leaf, the movable leaf being shown open. Fig. 4 is the front View of the stationary leaf, with the movable leaf shown open. Fig. 5 is a separate view of the locking device.
Referring to the drawings, a denotes the vehicle body in which is mounted the stationary leaf 1, and b the door which is secured to the movable leaf 10. The stationary leaf 1 is'provi'ded with a pocket 2. The movable lea-f 10 is provided with an arched arm ll'which fits and moves in the pocket 2, the end of the arm being apertured as at 12 to receivethe pintle 3 which is supported in the pocket 2 and preferably mounted in an extension 4 of one wall thereof. The arched arm 11 as shown is of double thickness, formed by properly shaping and bending two separate pieces of metal, placing the arm members face to'face and securing them together as by welding.
The shape ofthe arched arm 11 andits point of pivotal connection with the extension 4 of a wall of the pocket 2 are such that when the parts of the hinge are in closed position the face plates lie closely adjacent to one another and in substantially parallel relation, and when open the face plates are at substantially right angles to -one another, these two positions being clearly shown ina stationary memberof'wrought metal comprising terminal face plate-portions and a rearw ardly extendingpocket formed by bending themetal to U shape. at an. inter- Figs. 1 and 2. In order to limit' the extent shown in Figs. 1, 3 and -t, to limit the extent of opening movement of the movable. leaf 10. It is preferable to lap one of these projections over the other and weld them at the point indicated at X in Fig. 3, in order to add stiffness and rigidity to the structure.
WVhile the ends of the pintlemay be sup ported in both walls of the pocket,'thus permanently uniting the hinge members, I prefer to utilize the construction here shown and described in order that the two parts of the hinge may be separated by lifting the movable leaf so that its arched arm will be disengaged from the pintle.- In order to provide for this separation of the hinge parts it is necessary to slot the face of the stationary leaf 1, as indicated at 6, in order to give a space within whichto move the end of the arched arm 11; and in order to guard against the accidental disengagement of the arm from the pintle there is .provided a stop 15 which fills in this slot 6 after the hinge members are assembled together, with its end lying against the side of'the arched arm 11, as clearly seen in Fig. 4, this stop having an apertured and countersunk head which registers with one of the attaching screw holes and is held in position by one of the attaching screws.
Figs. 3 and 1 indicate how a pair ofthese hinges may be made together, one pair at each end of a strip ;1 but itis, obvious that my invention is not concerned with the manner in which pairs of hinges may be connected together. a
I claim as my invention I 1. In an article of the character described,
, a stationary leaf member comprising a base two leaves, and a projection at the edge of the base of the stationary leaf extending across the mouth of the-U-shaped pocket and forming a stop cooperating with the arched arm on the movable member.'
2. In an'article of the character described,
mediate point, a movable member comprising a baseand an arched arm movable in said pocket and pivotally" connected therewith, and projections from an edge of said face plate at opposite sides of said pocket, partially bridging the mouth of the pocket and adapted to coiiperate with said movable member to limit itsswing in one direction.
3. In an article of-the character described,
a stationary leaf member comprising a basebent at an'intermediate point to form a U- shaped pocket, amovable leaf member comprising a base and an arched arm arranged able within said pocket, a. pin connecting said arm and pocket to pivotally unite the two leaves, and oppositely extending overlappingprojections at the edge of the base of the stationary leaf permanently secured together and forming a stop cooperating with the arched arm on the movable member.
