This invention relatesto a grinding machine and particularly to improved means for supportingthe grinding wheel slide in a surface vgrinding machine, thisapplication vbeing a .division ot'- applicants prior application, lSerial No. 772,054, tiled June 6,1913.
Ina surface grinding machine it iscustoinary to mount the grinding wheelupona shaft-extending atright angles to the line of travel of the table and it` is necessary to so support this shaft that the'wheel-mayI be Y projected forwardly over any' point onthe surface 'of the table. In' certain positions, therefore, the wheel must overhang 'its support for a considerable distance, and special provision must be made to insurethe necessary rigidity of the wheel shaft.
It is the principal object of my present. invention to .providegimproved devices for.

The hood 12 is longitudinally extended on each side of the bearing surface 11', as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the extended portions of the hood having a substantially semi-cylindrical.

Additional bearingsurfaces 17 are also lprovided upon the hood which cooperate with inclined bearing surfaces on the upper face of the wheel slide, whereby the slide is securely confined for longitudinal movement only. j
Depending members i8 are formed upon the slide 1G and support bearings 19 for the wheel shaft 20 carrying the wheel lV upon its forward end. The shaft 2O also carries a pulleyl driven by a belt 22 from a widefaced pulley 23. The pulley 23 is mounted in a swinging frame 24.- pivoted to a bracket A 25 which is secured to a downwardly extending projection of the hood l2 and is movable vertically therewith. At its outer end the swinging frame 24 is spring-connected to a rod 26 which in turn is secured to the outer portion of the hood l2, provision being made for vertical adjustment of the rod 26. The pulley 23 may have any suitable connection to the main power shaft of the machine which will permit vertical vadjustment of the pulley 23, one form of such connection being clearly shown in the original application.
lVith the construction it will be seen that the belt 22 can travel longitudinally along ythe wide-faced pulley l23 as the wheel slide is moved forward and back, while the drivfor the pulley 23 permit vertical adjust-ment of the hood l2 upon the support 10. For the longitudinal adjustment of the wheel slide, the slide is provided with a rack 30 meshing with a pinion I3l. The pinion 3l is mounted upon a short horizontal shaft 32 connected by beveled gears 33 and 34 to a forwardly extending iorizontal shaft 35. The forward endof the shaft 35 is supported in a casing 36 mounted on a bracket 37 secured to the hood l2. A hand wheel 38 is keyed to the forward end of the shaft 35 and constitutes means for rapidly adjusting the wheel slide longitudinally through the medium of the beveled gears 33 and 34 and the rack and pinion 30 and 3l.
For the more accurate adjustment of the wheel slide, a worm wheel 40 is loosely mounted onthe shaft and meshes with a worm il upon a short shaft 42 supported in bearings in the casing 36 and having a hand wheel 43 mounted thereon. A. flanged `collar 44- is secured to the shaft 35 upon one side of the worm wheel i0 and second flanged collar l5 is slidably keyed to the shaft 35 upon the opposite side of the worm wheel. A tightening nut 46 constitutes means for forcing the collar against the worm wheel thus binding the wheel between the` two flanged collars; When thus secured the shaft 35 may be slowly rotated by means of therewith. A water guard or shielefl 50 is mounted upon the hood i2 1 which is vertically adjustable in clamp The clamp 52 is pi'fotally connected at 53 to a link 54E which in turn is pivoted at upon a casting' 56 mounted upon the hood l2. At the pivots 53 and 55 the parte are connected by friction joints so that the shield 50 may be easily and quickly moved to any desired position without the necessity of using tools for this adjustment. l
The operation of the machine herein dcscribe'd'is thought to be clearly apparent, the work being secured upon the table l and being moved longitudinally thereby beneath the grinding wheel lil/ .lhe 'wheel is vertically adjusted through the medium of the vertical feed screw 13 and is thereby brought into proper relation with the work. The wheel .may also be adjusted laterally by the devices herein described so that it will operate over any desired portion of the table surface.
Having thus described my invention it will be evident that changes and modifications can be madetherein by those skilled in i the art without departing from the spiritv and scope thereof as set forth in the claims and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, but
