To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, \VILLIAM E. BURLE- SON and WILLIAM T. STAEBLER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Ann Arbor, in the county of WVashtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover- Plates for Stoves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in cover plates for stoves.

One object of the invention is to provide a cover plate for use in connection with gas, gasolene, blue flame oil stoves or any other stove having a suitable burner, and which is provided with means for evenly distributing the heat over the bottom of the utensil engaged therewith.

Another object is to provide a cover plate of this character which will increase the draft of the flame and cause a complete combustion of the gas at the burner.

With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claim, it being further understood that changes in the specific structureshown and described may be made with n the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Our improved cover plate 1, may be of any suitable shape and constructed of sheet metal, said plate being shown in the present instance as of circular form and as con- In the plate are formed a plurality of flame and heat escape openings 2, which may be of any suitable shape and formed in any suitable manner. The openings 2, are shown in the present instance as of semi-circular form and as arranged in concentric annular rows, said openings, however may be arranged in any desired manner in the plate.

In forming the openings 2, the metal is slitted in the desired shape and the portion of the metal cut by the slits is bent upwardly at a slight angle to form obliquely held heat and flame deflecting lips 3. The lips are shown as projecting outwardly to direct the heat and flame passing through the openings 2, toward the outer edge of the plate.

The plate has a narrow upwardly pro jecting circumscribing rim or flange 4, which strengthens and imparts rigidity to the plate and assists in preventing the lips 3, from being flattened by the placing of heavy utensils on the plate. The lips 3 are further protected by utensil supporting radially disposed ribs or heads 5. which may be formed on the plate in any suitable man: ner and are here shown as being struck or pressed upwardly therefrom. The ribs project above or are slightly h gher than the lips 23. and correspond in height to the upstanding rim or flange 4. The ribs may be arranged in any suitable manner. the same being shown in Figs. 1 and 2, of the drawings as project ng radially from near the center of the ate to the outer edges thereof. while in F g. 5, annular. concentrically arranged ribs 6, are shown. said annular ribs alte nating with or being disposed between the annular rows of open ngs 7. and lips 8, of this fo m of the plate. he lips extend upward a distance less than the wid h of the rim 4.

The plate is provided w th a handle formed of wire, which cons sts of a central portion 10. formed of a strip of wire bent midway its ends to form an eye or loop ll, by means of which the cover may be hung up when not in use. The inner ends of the wire forming the po tion 10, are bent to form late ally extending loops 12, adapted to receive rivets 18, whereby the handle is secured to the cover. On the central portion 10. of the handle is arranged an open wire coil 14; which provides a non-heating grip for the handle.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and operation of the lIlYBIlillOIl will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor detalls of constructlon may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advat pressed upward'and ending in a plane common to said rim, a plurality of upwardly directed semi-circular lips stamped out oi? said plate and disposed between said ribs to provide escape openings, and a handle secured to said plate, as and in the manner set forth.
