To all whom it may concern Be it known that. I, CHARLES E. RUMsEY, a citizen of the. United States, andja resident of Tampa, in thecounty of Hillsboro and State of Florida, haveinvented a new and Improved Box-Press, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to presses used for clamping and pressingdown the covers of boxes while being nailed,qand in .its preferred form the invention is more particularly designed for use inseouringfthe covers'of orange and like boxes. In the use of presses of the indicated character, the filled boxes are received at the press in regular succession, and the periodicity of delivery is such as to make it incumbent on theworkman to position the boxes, clamp and nail the covers, and release the covered boxes, all
with unfailing'regularity and despatch.
For the purpose of carrying out the objects of my invention, clamp elements are mounted for movement to and fromthe box support of the press, as usual, and to have, in addition, a secondary sliding movement in the direction of their axes.
The invention will be particularly described in the specific description following.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate correspondingparts in all the views, and in which: I
Figure 1 is a front elevation of'a box press provided with my improved clamping means; and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on the line2- -2 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention in practice, in accordance with the illustrated example, a frame 10 is provided having means to support a box as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and designated by the letter A. In the example shown the box support comprises a front frame member 11, a rear member 12, the front frame member having preferably a wear plate 13 and the rear member 12 having a wear plate 14 of angle iron whereby, the vertical flange thereof will form a stop to position the box A. In order to clamp the box on its support, clamp elements 15 are provided in the formo'f elongated rods or arms; these are mountedslidably in sleeve bearings 16. The lllustrated' means for guiding the up right rods 17 comprise upper brackets 18 and lower brackets 19 secured to the frame 10 and through which therods 17 pass.
Suitable means are provided to reciprocate the rods 17, there being shown for this purpose a foot lever 20 secured to the shaft 21 having suitable bearings in the frame 10 atthe back ofthe press. The upright rod 17 at one side of the press is connected by a link 22 withthe foot lever 20 through the medium of a bracket 20' secured to said foot lever. The upright rod 17 at the opposite side of the press is connected by a link 22 with a forwardly extending arm 23 on the rock shaft 21 through the medium of the bracket 23*. Thus the arrangement is such that the single foot lever simultaneously actuates the two upright rods 17 through the medium of the rock shaft 21. The depression of the foot lever 20 is in opposition to a retractile spring 21 secured to said lever at the lower end and at its upper end to a crossbar 25 or equivalent fixed element on the frame 10. Any approved means may be provided to hold the foot lever 20 in the depressed position, there being shown for the I clamp elements 15 in their bearings 16 si-- multaneously with the vertical reciprocating movements imparted to said clamp elements by the upright rods 17 I provide a lever 29 for each clamp element 15. Each lever 29 is fulcrumed near its lower end on a set collar 30 secured to the adjacent rod 17. The up per end of each lever 29 is connected by a lin'k 31 with the rear end of a clamp element 15, the latter having a lateral stud 32 to which said link is pivoted. Means to rock the lever 29 may consist ofrollers 3 3 disposed on the machine in position to engage the levers '29 as .the latter are reciprocated with the upright rods 17. I have shown the rollers 33 mounted on studs 34: formed on cated in dotted lines Fig. 2, in which position the bearings 16 will be raised and'the clamp elements 15 will be in the retracted position indicated in dotted lines F that a box A arriving at the press may be properly positioned without any interference from the said clamp elements 15. Upon the foot lever being depressed, the upright rods 17 will be drawn downward and will carry downward theclamp elements 15. In the downward movement of therods 17 the levers 29 will have engaged the rollers 33 and will be rocked forwardly, thereby sliding the clamp elements 15 forwardly to pro'-.
