Description

' side board A are three iron supports, D DID,
UNITED STATES `PATENT GEEICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE AND FOLDING WAGON-BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,308, dated June 27, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL HEFFLEY and JAMES D. PE'rrrr, of Rochester, Fulton county, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Adjustable and Folding Wagon-Bed; and we do `hereby declare the following' to be an eX- act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l represents the under side of the wagon-bed. Fig. 2 is a Side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction of the bed with a jointed bottom, having stay-iron plates across the bed on the upper and under side of the bed, and oblique apertures to hold the curved ends of the side supports.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe it, as follows:
A A represent the side boards of the bed 5 B B, the end boards, that are fastened to the side boards by a cross-rod, C. On the inside of each.
that are bolted to the side boards, but their lower ends project below the boards A,and are curved and pointed inward, so as to be inserted intheoblique apertures E E E that pass through the upper cross-plates G G G, and through the bottom boards H H of the bed, and through the lower braces or cross-plates J J J on the under side of the bottom of the bed, soi as to brace the side boards rmly, and always preserve their vertical position and prevent them from spreading outward when the wagon-bed is heavily loaded. The bottom of the bed is formed of two boards with their cross-strips and cross-p1ates GV and J divided in their centers, so that when the ticles, another for lighter work, and a third, be-
ing neatly painted, to be used as a riding carriage. The strips L L are intended to hold the bed to the running-gear.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe combination of the jointed bottom H H with the stay-plates G G on top of the bottom of the wagon-bed, and the stay-plates J J on the under side of the bed, having oblique apertures E E, with their iron curved supports D D and center joints or hinges K K K, as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
