OSCAR LOEWENBACH, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN. i
MANIFOLD SHEET AND BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1915.
Application filed December 18, 1913. Serial No. 807,377.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR LOEWENBACH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifold Sheets and Books; and I- do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim of this specification, its object being to meet a trade demand for economical one piece manifold record sheets, (separate or bound) each having transparent and opaque record divisions, and it is preferable to perforate each sheet between the transparent and opaque divisions thereof to facilitate separation of said divisions.
Figure l of the drawings represents a plan view of one of my improved manifold sheets for a record in triplicate; Fig. 2, a perspective view of an open book of similar sheets folded and containing a sheet of carbon-paper in position between transparent and opaque divisions of the uppermost manifold sheet of which a portion of said transparent division thereof is partly broken away, and Fig. 8, an edge view of one of the folded sheets having the carbon paper inserted between transparent and opaque divisions thereof.
Referring by numerals tothe drawings 4 indicates a transparent record division, and 5 and 6 respectively indicate one of two opaque recorddivisions of a one piece threedivision manifold sheet. It is preferable, as herein shown, to perforate the sheet crosswise of the same at 7 and 8 between divisions thereof to facilitate a separation of said divisions.
For binding, triplicate division manifold record sheets in accordance with my invention may be severally folded, as herein shown, to provide each with a margin 9 for stitching, stapling or otherwise connecting it with others of a group to a back or cover, a cover 10 being illustrated, or the margin 9 may be impaled on pins or posts of a tem porary binder. The uppermost division of each folded sheet in a book is free of the binding and it is preferable to fold said sheet so that a portion of its under division extends beyond the others thereof at an edge of the book.
In practice a single sheet 11 of carbonpaper (carbonized on both sides or folded to expose over and under carbon surfaces) is placed between the underlying transparent and opaque divisions t and 6 of a properly folded triplicate division manifold record sheet in accordance with myinvention, and the writing is done upon the uppermost opaque division 5 of said sheet. As a result of the writing, there are carbon facsimiles upon the upper side of the undermost opaque division of the sheet and upon the underside of the transparent division of said sheet through whlch it may be read, and thereafter any one or more of said divlsions may be separated from the remainder thereof. By having the underlying division of each of a group of folded and bound sheets extended, as aforesaid, the finding of the place in which to insert the carbon-paper is facilitated.
From the foregoing it will be understood that at least two copies of the readily obtained once-written record are upon opaque divisions of the same folded manifold sheet in accordance with my invention, and these divisions of said sheet are best adapted for general business purposes, especially when subjected to considerable handling, the writ ing being plainer and less fugitive thereon. My invention also enables me to economically furnish manifold record sheets, and books of the same, in which the paper stock is generally heavier and of better quality than is ordinarily the case.
I claim:
A manifold record sheet having long tudinally arranged divisions, the end d visions being opaque, and the intermediate division being transparent, one end division being separated from the transparent division by a transversely arranged comb1ned fold and separation line, a margin portion being interposed between the other opaque division and the transparent divlsion, the margin having a transversely arranged cen;
trally disposedfold line, and at the junction the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisof said margln and the last mentioned oonsin in the presence of two Witnesses.
opaque division, a transversely arranged combined fold and separation line being OSCAR LOEWVENBAOH' 5 provided. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I N. E. OLIPHANT, have hereuntose't my hand at Milwaukee in M. E. DOWNEY.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D. G.
