Description

G. A. CARPENTER.
BOTTLE STOPPER.
APPLICATION HLED m3. 21.1913.
1,162,032, Patented Nov. 30, 1915.1
WITNESSES ZNVENTOR \EDLUMBIA PLANGG c,
GEORGE A. CARPENTER, OF FOR-'1 MORGAN, COLORADO.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
Application filed February 21, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. CARPENTER, citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Morgan, in the county of Morgan and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Stoppers, of which-the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottle stoppers and as its principal object contemplates the provision of such a device which is equipped with a novel form of leakage preventing packing and means for preventing the accidental displacement of the stopper.
A further object is to construct the retaining means for holding the stopper in assembled position with such regard to proportion, number and arrangement of parts that it may be readily applied to any bottle of standard make.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated. in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
Vith reference to the drawings, wherein, I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practise, and throughout the several views of which, similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bottle neck equipped with my stopper. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 8 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the stopper without the retaining means.
Proceeding now to the description of the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the stopper of my device formed with the laterally extending bore 2 wherein is oosely journaled the U shaped retaining member 3. The stopper 1 is preferably tapered adjacent its lower ends and may be made of any suitable material. The member 3 is preferably formed of a length of wire but any other resilient material may be employed. Adjacent its lower tapered end, the stopper 1 is reduced to form the neck 4.- around which is mounted the packing gland 5. This packing gland is preferably formed of rubber Specification of Letters Patent. i

and-is provided with an annular bead 6, which when the cork is in assembled position bears against the periphery of the bottle mouth as is illustrated in Fig. 3. The bottle neck 7 is of the customary construction having the annular mouth and circular flange 8 and adjacent enlarged portion 9, these elements being clearly illustrated in the drawings to bring out the fact that the stopper retaining means may be readily applied to any bottle neck of standard construction. As a means for retaining the stopper in sealed position, I have employed a length of wire 10 which is wound about the bottle neck and consequently bent upon itself at the junction of the encircling portions to provide the outwardly and oppositely directed retaining arms 11. These retaining arms 11 are bent at their terminals to form the bill members 12 which are adapted to engage the bill members 13 formed on the U shaped member 3 and thus prevent the accidental displacement of the stopper.
l V hat is claimed is:
1. In combination with the neck of a bottle, a strand of wire encircling said neck, crossed arms formed integral with said wire and radiating from their point of intersection, a stopper, and means carried by said stopper having connections with said arms, for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the neck of a bottle, a strand of wire encircling said neck, crossed arms formed integral with said wire and radiating from their point of intersec tion, a stopper, and a substantially U- shaped strand of wire carried by said stopper having connections with said arms, as and for the purpose set forth.
8. In combination with a neck of a bottle, a strand of wire embracing said neck and tle, a strand 01' wire looped about said neck and arranged in crossed relation to provide oppositely extending arms, saidstrand having the free extremities thereof formed into loops, a stopper, and means carried by said stopper connecting the latter with said loops.
GEORGE A. CARPENTER.
