1 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NO 30, 1915.
Application filed June 10, 1914. Serial No. 844,337.
Be it known that W6,.HARRY DANIEL. HATHAWAY, citizens 'of' the United States-"residing at Gross, in the county of .Boyd and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence- Posts, of which the followingis a specification.
' The invention relates to a fence post, and. more particularly tothe class'of adjustable .fence posts. V
The primary object of the invention 'is'the provision of 'a fence post wherein the same is constructed to hold any style of wvire fence, and which will not pull up out of the ground nor give to either side by reason of any undue strain on the wire fence, as the. said post is firmly braced, thereby rendering the same strong and rigid.
Another object of the invention is the pro- 7 vision of a post wherein it maybe readily adjusted at all times so that. the stretches of the wire fence at the two angle's thereof may be tightened, and both stretches can be simultaneously drawn taut.
A further object of the invention isthe provision of a fence post which is construct ed for use at the corners of a fence, the same being of novel form so that it can be operated in a simple manner for the adjustment thereof and the tightening of the stretches of the wire fence.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a fence post of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture:
I With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawingFigure 1 is a side elevation of a fence post constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the main post section. Fig. 4 is a sectionalview on the line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the'main post section. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the braces. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the looking jaw for the braces. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary side elevation of the post showing the lever adapted for use in adjusting the p post and. in applied Position relative thereto,
F. J ONES and" 'Fig. 9' is a sideelevation of the lever. Fig.
10, is a; central transverse sectional View through'the j aw plate shown in Fig; 7. Fig. ,11'13'2111 elevation of one of the vertical supports.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail', the
'post comprises a main post section 10 which. is of tubular form and has a reduced perforated end .11 swingingly supported by meansof a pivot 12 between spaced bearing ears 13 formed on a vertical support 14 provided with a base l5cwhich isfiXed to a foundation piece 16, the latter adapted to be embedded in the ground, and likewise a portion ofthesupport'l l is embedded in the ground so as to anchor the post section. This postse'ction-IO is formed with reversely beveled faces 17 which form a ridge 18 for a portion ofthe length thereof, the ridge being provided with a series of ratchet teeth 19 to cooperate with the brace means hereine after fully described. The pivot .12 supporting the post section 10 is mounted in the ears 13, and the base 15 is fastened to the piece 16 in any desirable manner.
Adjustably engageable with any one of the teeth 19 in the ridge 18 on the post 10 is a notched jaw plate 20 formed with perforated ear extensions 21 receiving pivots 22 which swingingly connect a pair of brace rods 23 thereto. these rods being arranged in divergent relation to each other and are connected by means of pivots 24 between bearing cars 25 formed at the'upper ends of anchoring supports 26, each being similar to the construction of the support 14 and are mounted upon foundation pieces 27 which are embedded in the ground and likewise portions of the supports 26, the pivots 21 being mounted in the ears 25 on the supports so that the brace rods 23 can swing relative thereto on the adjustment of the post section 10, the jaw plate 20 being designed to ride over the teeth 19 when the post section is being adjusted, and will lock with any one of the teeth to hold the said post section in its adjusted position and brace The wire fence is trained about the post section 10 and fastened thereto in anv suitable manner and should the two angular stretches of the fence become slackened the ost section 10 can be readily adjusted for the tightening thereof. To enable the con= venient adjustment of the post section 10 there is employed a lever 28 on which are mounted on one end portion thereof spaced from each other collars 29 to which are loosely connected the ring 30 and book 31, the latter being adapted for detachable engagementsin a hole 32 formed in the jaw plate between the ear extensions 21, while the ring 30 is adapted to engage in, one of the teeth 19 so that on pressing the lever downwardly when engaged in this manner the post section 10 will become adjusted and the jaw plates 20 will be shifted over the teeth 19' for the locking engagement of the jaw platenwith any one of the same so as to hold the. post in its adjusted position. It
will beapparent that the post section 10 .7 swings on the pivot 12 when it is being adjusted'so that the wirefence when connected thereto will be tightened or slackened as the occasion may require... On the adjustment of the post section 10 both angular stretches of the wire fence willibe simultaneously tightened or slackened, thus requiring but a single operation to eifect the same.
The notch 33 and the jaw plate 20 are shaped correspondingly to the ridge 18, and when this jaw plate is engaged withanv one of the teeth the post section 10 is firmly held in its adjusted position, while the brace rods 23 reinforce the same and prevent any lateral or side movement so that the post will be held in place at all times.
The post enables the convenient adjustment of the wire fence as it avoids the necessity of removing any fasteners which connect the said wire fence to the post, and both I stretches of the fence can be simultaneously stretched or slackened as may be required. From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
keeper plate pivotally connected with the brace rods to'permit lateral swinging move ment thereof, and a plurality of ratchet teeth formed on the post forlocking engagement of the keeper plate therewith.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
