REBOUND-CHECK FOR LINE COMPOSING- CASTING MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. BRACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rebound-Checks for Line Composing and Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in line composing and line casting machines and more especially to those of the linotype class which employ a main cam shaft, operative periodically, to perform a certain cycle of operations, and the primary object of the invention is to provide means for preventing rebound of this main cam shaft when the operation thereofis arrested and also to avoid racing of the cam shaft under the influence of the spring associated with the justifying mechanism;
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements, and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents an elevation of a portion of the right-hand side of a machine embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the left-hand side of the machine.
Similar parts are designated by the same reference characters in the several views.
- The invention is shown in the present instance as applied to a machine of the lino-1 type class, such machines embodying a main cam shaft 1 revoluble in suitable bearings on the main frame and having a number of cams fixed to turn therewith and in the direction indicated by the arrows in the two figures. The cams on this main cam shaft perform various operations at appropriate intervals, as is well known in machines of the linotype class. Only three Of these cams are shown in the present instance, the cam 52 being known as the line transfer and delivery cam, the cam 3 as the second elevator cam, and the cam 4 as the justification cam. The cam shaft may be driven by the usual gearing 5 representing one of the gear wheels loosely mounted on the driving shaft 6, and this gear 5 is connected at appropriate intervals to the driving shaft 6 Specification of Letters Patent.

by a clutch which embodies clutch shoes 7 which are controlled by the clutch-shift-' ing mechanism 8. The cam 2 carriesa laterally-swinging member 9 which serves as a stop to arrest rotation of the main cam shaft after the latter has operated to perform its 7 cycle of operations. This member 9 is .arranged to act upon the upper side of the member 10 of a vertically movable starting device 11, the latter being connected to the clutch mechanism 8 whereby the clutch shoes will be. disengaged from the driving gear 5 when the member 9 on the cam 2 comes against the starting device. Disengagement of the laterally-swinging member 9 from the member 10 of the starting device will commence the neXt succeeding operation of the cam shaft. The member 9 is located at such a point, on the. cam 2 as to cause interruptionin the operation of the cam shaft at the point where it is. desiredto terminate its revolution, it. being understood that the cam shaft makes one revolution and its operation is then interrupted automatically to perform each cycle of operations. It has been found,
for some time, that when the forwardrotation of the cam shaft 'andits cams is suddenly arrested, a rebound will occur, causing backward rotation of the shaft and the cams thereon and these 7 parts will eventually come to rest at a point considerably behind the desired stopping point. This objec-' tion is obviated by the present invention.
In the arrangement shown, a weight 12 is' applied to the cam 3 and a weight 13 is applied to the Cam 4, both of these weights being so arranged that they will be forward of the center of the cam shaft when the cams are in stopping position. The opposite sides of the cams 3 and 4 are of skeleton form and hence much lighter in weight at the side of the cam shaft opposite to the weights, and the overbalancing thereby produced causes the stopping member 9 to remain down upon the member 10 of the stopping and starting device 11, thereby causing the cams to stop at the desired stopping point and to remain at that point without rebounding.
Practical experience has also shown that during rotation of the main cam shaft, the
class as heretofore constructed, the spring 16 caused the roller 14 to press against the justificationcam a with such force as to accelerate the speed ofrotation of the cam shaft while the roller 14 was traversing those portions of this cam which sloped in-' wardly or toward the center. The weights l2 and 13, however, areso related to the justification cam 4 that they will be rising at the time the spring 16 is tending to accelerate the speed of rotation of-the cam shaft, the weights thereby counteracting the force of the spring 16 and insuring regularity in the speed of rotation of the camshaft.
I claim as my invention I 1. In a-machine of the class described, the
combination of a cam shaft, means for driving the same, astop for interrupting the operation of said shaft "periodically, and means embodying a weight carried by the cam shaft and arranged to be in falling position to prevent rebound thereof when operation of the cam shaft is interrupted by said stop. 7
' 2. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a cam shaft, mean for driving the same, means embodying a stop carried by the cam shaft for interrupting the operation of said shaft periodically at a given point in its revolution, and means embodying a weight carried by the cam shaft and arranged to be in a falling posltlon to prevent rebound of the cam shaft when operation of the latter is interrupted by said .stop and for retaining the cam shaft at a predetermined stopping point.
3. In a machine of the class described, the
combination of a cam shaft, means for driving the same, means embodying a stop carried by the cam shaft for interrupting the operation of said shaft periodically, and a Weight carried by said shaft and arranged to be in falling position to produce an overbalance at the side of the shaft carrying said stop whereby rebound of the shaft, when operation thereof is arrested, is prevented.
4. In a machine of the linotype class, in
combination, a main driving clutch, a cam shaft driven by said clutch, means on the cam shaft for disengaging said clutch and stopping the forward rotation of the cam shaft at a given point in its rotation, and a weight attached to the cam shaft and arranged til 63 be in falling position whereby its gravitation will prevent rebound of the cam shaft after its forward rotation has been stopped.
5. In a machine of the linotype class, the
combination with the main cam shaft, a stop for arresting rotation thereof, and justificationmeans acting on said shaft with a tendency to accelerate the speed of rotation thereof during part of its revolutlon, of a weight carried by said shaft in a position to H be falling when said stop operates to arrest rotation of the shaft and thereby prevent rebound of the'shaft, and in a position to be rising and to act against the tendency of the justification means to accelerate the speed of rotation of the shaft.
