Be it known that 1,1IARRY SLADE, asubjeot of the King of'Great Britain, residing at Wakefield, Yorkshire, England,haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Header'Joints for Fuel-Economizers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I y
This'invention relates to fuel economizers, particularly to the fastening of the tubes to the headers, and its object is to provide improved means for the purpose, whereby the apparatus is enabled to withstand higher pressures than have heretofore been considered practicable.
To this and other ends theinvention consists in the novel features of construction and combinations of elements hereinafter described.
A convenient and eifective form of the in vention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a central section taken longitudinally through one of the tubes and through the upper and lower headers, the.
section being taken through the shorter diameter of the lid which closes the hand hole in the top of the upper header, this hand hole being elliptical in shape as customary in constructions of this general kind. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the locking rings provided to lock the tubes in place in the headers.
The tube A, preferably with a slight taper at the ends, is provided at its ends with circumferential grooves B, and the headers E, F are provided with correspondingly shaped openings for the ends of the tubes. On the inside the headers are formed with shoulders D around the openings mentioned. The upper header at proper intervals throughout its length is provided with elliptical shaped hand holes closed by removable lidsone of which is shown in section at X Fig. 1, the section being throughthe shorter diameter of the ellipse. The lid is applied to the hand hole from the inside of the header and its tapered periphery is drawn up into the hand hole against the correspondingly tapered wall of the same and there held by a bolt construction (not shown) well known and customarily used for the purpose. The slightly elliptical shape given to the hand hole is to permit the removal of the lid X, this being effected by drawing it down from the hole into the header, and giving it a quarter turn Specification of Letters Patent.

p The parts having been assembled as shown in the drawing, with the grooved ends. of thevtubes projecting'into the interior of the headers just beyond; the shoulders D, the split locking rings C, of a thickness greater than the depth of the grooves B, are placed upon the inner beveled ends of the tube, and forced backward over the same until they spring into the grooves B, clasping or hugging closely the same with their portions. which pro ect bevond the grooves overhang ing theheader shoulders D, and constituting collars which effectively prevent the headers from being forced from the tubes, and resist any stresses tending to separate the parts.
The rings are made of metal, and are preferably sufliciently resilient to spring into the grooves and hug the same tightly, but they can be made, if desired, to have little or no resiliency. In any case they should have suflicient resistance toshearing stress to perform their functions properly. With the tubes locked in place as described, the apparatus can be subjected to high internal pressures without danger of the headers being blown off the tubes. It will also be noted that the construction herein illustrated and described permits the split rings to be applied tothe grooved ends of the tubes after they and their headers have been as sembled and fitted together, this operation taking place in the upper header through hand holes which are afterward closed, and in the lower header by inserting the ring by hand through one of the tube holes in the inwardly projecting grooved lower end Patented Nov. 23, 1915.

A stronger and surer connection between the tubes and head ers is thereby obtained than would otherwise be practicable, while at the same time the split rings are so positioned that they may be reached and manipulated from the inside of the header whenever it is desired toremove them for any purpose-as for example to permit thewithdrawal of the tube with which they are associated.
