The operation of the machine is automatic and to automatically feed sheets of paper between the paper supporting flaps and mandrel, I provide a vertically adjustable table 16 to support a pileof paper P, said table being guided in its vertical movement by a series of posts-17, in the present instance three in number, engaging in openings in lugs extending laterally from the table; these posts also serving to prevent lateral displacement of the pile. of paper. To support the table to have vertical adjustment, a
rack 19 is fixed to the bottom thereof, a pinion 2O fixed to a rotatable shaft 21 meshing with said rack. The shaft 21 is continuously rotated by a worm 22 fiXedto a shaft 23 meshing with a worm wheel% mounted on said shaft :21. The shaft 23 is rotated by a gear 25 fixed thereto meshing with a. pinion 26 fixed to the shaft 13. As the paper from which the receptacles are made is relatively thick the table is continuously movingup and the rotation of the shaft 21 is so. timed that the top of the pile of paper willbe substantially in the same plane at all times as the paper is fed there from. To permit the paper table to be lowered=the worm 2i is mounted on the shaft 21- to have sliding movement, and by imparting sliding movement to said wheel it is thrown out of mesh with the worm, and

To actuate the arms 30 the ends of the arms opposite to the fingers 29 are connected by a member 33 connected to a slidably sup ported stem 34 having a downwardly extending forked portion 35 in which engages an offset or inclined portion 36 of a slidably supported rod 36. One endof this rod is connected to one arm of a lever 37 and actuated by a cam 39 fixed to the shaft with which engages a cam following roller 38 connected to the other arm of-thelever.
After a sheet of paper has been fed be tween the paper flaps and mandrel and pre- 1 vious to the flaps folding said paper around rod cooperating with the clamping plunger 54: to cause it to move toward and clamp a sheet of paper to the mandrel, said plunger being retracted by a spring 59.
As'stated, the overlapped edges of sides of the paper on the mandrel are secured together by a clamping strip. ' 9.'In an apparatus of the class specified, the combination of a mandrel; means to support and Wrap a sheet of material around the mandrel with the edges overlapping; means to feed a metallic strip adjacent the overlapped edges of the material on the mandrel and provide said strip With prongs, comprising 'a pair of rotatable rolls one roll having circumferentially disposed prongs and the other roll recesses in which the prongs engage; means to intermittently actuate the strip feeding means; means to sever the strip during the intervals of rest; and a reciprocable ram cooperating-With the mandrel to force the prongs on the severed strip through the overlapped material to clamp the same together.
