CHARLES L. MICHOD, OF CHICAGO HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS.
FENCE-POST.
Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
Application filed December 23, 1913. Serial No. 808,402.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. 31101101),
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago Heights, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence- Posts, of which the following is a specification.
of metal. The strains to which the posts at different points along a fence are subjected vary, depending onthe location of the posts. Thus the strains to which the'line-posts are subjected is much less than that to which the gate-posts are subjected, and the strain on the gate-posts is less than that on the end or the corner posts. It is, therefore, customary to make these different posts of different strengths that they may effectually resist the respective strains to which they are subjected in use. The practice heretofore has been to provide different kinds of posts as line, gate, end and corner posts, and
this has resulted in relatively great expense to the user, as the dealers were thus obliged to carry a stock of these different posts.
My object is to provide for the formation of the various forms of osts, and also preferably the braces, there or, of similar units which may be used singly as posts, if desired, or grouped together in any desired number to form posts requiring greater strength, and also used as braces; my idea being to provide for the construction of-all the posts and preferably the braces therefor, from similar unit-sections, and thus a dealer instead of being obliged to carry a supply of the diflerent posts need carry only the similar unit-sections by which the user may'form all of the posts and braces required. Referring to the accompanying draw- "ings'Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a fence constructed in accordance with'my invention, those portions of the fence structure which extend below the level of the ground being represented by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar, enlarged, view of the upper end of one of the gate-posts and the braces of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar which the posts and braces of Fig. 1 are constructed. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the upper end of the corner-post and one of the braces therefor shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 5, an enlarged section taken on the line 5 in Fig. 1, and viewed in the direction of the arrow. My invention relates more particularly to the building of fences, the posts of which are The form in which I prefer to provide the unit-post in carrying outmy invention, is that illustrated -in-the drawings, reference being had more particularly to Fig. 3, where a single unit is shown disconnected from other parts. The unit illustrated is formed of an angle-iron upright-member 6, the flanges 7 and 8,'of which contain openings 9 and 10, and extend at 90 to each other; and a base-plate or anchor-plate 11 of angleshape to provide a horizontal base-section 12 and an upright section 13, the upright member 6 fitting at its lower edge-against the section 12 and at its flange 8 against the section 13, to which latter it is secured, as.
by rivets 14, a brace 15 connected with the v base-section 12 and the flange 7, as by rivets l6, cooperating with the plate-section 13 to hold the upright 6 rigid relative to the baseplate 11-. 7
In the forming of a fence, as for example that illustrated in Fig. 1, one of the unitpos'ts is employed for each line post 17 (one only of which is shown), two of the unitposts are used to form each gate-post 18, four of the unit pos ts are used to form each corner-post 19 (one only of which is shown),
and in case an end-post (not shown) is required, two of the unit-posts would preferably be used. The braces shown at 20 and 21, for the corner and gate-posts, are also formed of the unit-posts, two being employed for each brace. In the case of the gaterposts, end-posts,
corner-posts and'braces, unit-posts of the preferred number, above stated, are secured together in grouped or clustered condition to form therespective posts and braces. In the caseof the gate-posts 18, two of the unitposts are assembled with their flanges 8 op-' posed, as represented in Fig. 2, with bolts passing through the registering openings 9 in the fiangesS, for securing these umts toview of one of the similar unit-posts of gether; and in the cases of the end and 0' ner-p'osts, two'and'four, respectively, of-the -unit-posts are grouped togethcr'and secured in'this relation by bolts passing-through the registering openings 9, Figs. "l and 5 ,showing the inaniieuof grouping the unit-- posts for the corner-posts 19.
T he unit-posts are preferably provided,
as shown, in order that any form ofwire fencing may be used therewith. the openings permitting of the fastening of the wires of the fencing totlie posts by separate wires or staplesathe line-posts 17, in' us'e,'being so positioned thatthe wire fencing will 118 against the flanges. 8, wherein the openings '10 are provided. '1 hc-wires of the fencing may be secured to the gate and corneiaposts in any desirable way. .In the accompanying drawings, the longitudinal strands of the fencing, as indicated at 23, are shown as embraced by the unit-posts forming the corner-posts and gate-posts, these Strands in the case of the gate-posts .being bent back at their ends around the posts and twisted about the body of the strands as illustrated. It will be understood, however, thatanyother desirable means may be provided for securing the fencing to the posts.
' The braces and 21 for the corner-posts and gate,-posts,'each preferably formed of tw" of the units, are disposed at 1ts upper ends at opposite-sides of the flanges of the.
the foregoing that the unit-posts may be used singly as lineposts, when desired, or may be grouped together to formiposts of requisite strength for use as line-posts whereextra strain is united and for posts at other points along as bolts.
the fence, Without requiring work to be performed onthe posts, excepting that of se-'" curing them together by simple means such Furthermore, the unit-posts may be constructed of such strength that fenceposts maybe made therefrom having thedesired degree of strength. Furthermore,
posts of greater strength require firmer an chorage than lighter posts,-and this is pro ,vided for as'each unit-post is 'formed with anchorge means, namely those represented at 11, w hich are so proportioned relative to "the" upright member 6 that Where the'unit post is'used singly as a post, the necessary anchorage means, namely those represented grouped relation, the multiplication of the footings 11, produced by using a plurality of units, as for example in the case of the corner-posts, four of these base-plates being provided, causes the posts to be properly -fenceun1t COIlSlSlElIlg Of a section of strucchored in. the ground.
