Description

Patented Nov. 9, 1915.

Rose %1 P115 flue mugs UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM H. ROSENZWEIG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO LOUIS BOSENZWEIG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TELEPHONE IlNDEX.
Application filed October 6, 1914. Serial No. 865,242.
T 0 all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, ABRAHAM H. ROSENZ- were, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone-Indexes, of which the followlng is a specification, such as will enablethose skilled in the art to which it appertalns to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as telephone indexes or directory devices; and the object thereof is to provide an unproved device of this class which is simple in construction, eflicientin operation and which will also serve as a pencil holder and may be suspended from any support or held upright on a desk, table or other article ofoffice furniture.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a front view of my improved telephone index; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the parts in a different position; and, Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig.
. 2 but showing only a part of the construction, and on an enlarged scale.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a telephone index or; directory comprising a back board, frame-(gr support a to the central front portion of -which, and transversely thereof, are secured approximately loop-shaped keepers 6, two of which are shown. Loosely mounted on, and suspended from, the keepers b are a plurality of index cards 0, any' desired number of which may be employed, together with a front cover d of heavy cardboard or other fibrous material on which is preferably printed the legend Telephone index, as shown in Fig. 1, or any suitable or desired advertisement may be printed on said cover and also on the top part a; of the back board, frame or support a.
The keepers b may be secured to the back board a in any desired manner but are preferably secured thereto by oppositely directed fastening devices formed in connection with the top and bottom side arms of said keepers, and passed through said board a' and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
clenched at the back thereof, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and the clenched members 6 may also be employed for the purpose of holding in position on the back of the board a, a transverse plate or similar device c with which is pivotally connected, or to which is hinged, a brace f which may be used. to support the device on a desk, table or other support, and the top edge portion of the back board a is provided with an aperture a whereby the device may be suspended from a hook, nail or other support.
The index cards 0 are provided at the bottom thereof, and on both sides thereof, with an alphabetic index 0- formed, or ap plied in any desired manner, and said index cards are also provided, both on the front and back thereof, with horizontal lines a and vertical lines 0 and c Which divide the front and back surfaces of said cards into three vertical spaces at the tops of which are placed the words Name and Exchange number.
The keepers .b are preferably formed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and are also preferably and approximately in theform of an ellipse, the greatest axis of which ranges upwardly and outwardly at an acute angle to the back board a, and with this construction the top portions 6 of said keepers are formed approximately on the arc of a circle and are provided with downwardly directed supplemental loop members 6*, while the bottom portions of said keepers, as shown at b", are formed on a continuous outward and upward curve, and with this construction the index cards 0 with the front cover d thereof, if said front cover be employed, may be turned upwardly into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4, and will remain in this position until they are again turned down, as shown in full lines in Figs. 2 and 4, and one or any desired number of the index cards a may thus be manipulated at any time and either side of said cards may thus beconsidered whenever necessary.
In the construction shown, the keepers by are made of flat material and the apertures g in the index cards a andthe front cover (1 are similarly formed, but my invention is be made, within the :scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. The keepers b may also be made to serve as a holder for a pencil h which is connected with the back board a by a flexible cord or other device h and'in this way a pencil may always be retained in position for use in connection with the index cards 0 or for anyother purpose.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An index device of the class described, comprising a back member to the front of which is secured, transversely thereof, a plurality of keepers which are approximately elliptical in form with their longer axis at an acute angle to the top end portion of the back member, and a plurality of index cards suspended on and adapted to be turned on said keepers into different positions and which are provided at the bottom edge thereof and on both sides thereof with an alphabetic index and both sides of which are divided into transversely rul\ed vertical. columns.
2. An index device of the class describe comprising a back member to the front of which is secured transversely thereof a plurality of keepers which are approximately elliptical in form with their longer axis at an acute angle to the top edge portion of the back member, said keepers being open at their back side and provided with attaching end pieces which are passed through the back member and clenched.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 2nd day of October 1914.
