To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OI-IN F. KING and JAMES NEARY, citizens of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Treating Paper-Pulp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for treating paper pulp.
In the manufacture of paper difliculty has been commonly experienced on account of the formation of lumps or clots of pulp Which, passing on to the distributing screen, are collected there and prevent even distribution of the pulp to the web or drop through the screen, or cause the pulp to collect on the under side of the screen and drop off in lumps or clots. This renders the paper inferior and objectionable.
Our improved machine for treating pulp may be installed in connection with the delivery screen or between the beaters and the washers or in other relation to the commonly used pulp making and treating apparatus.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved machine for treating pulp by means of which lumps or clots in the pulp are effectively disintegrated without grinding action or other action which injures the fiber of the pulp. Second, to provide a machine for treating pulp which improves the quality of the pulp, particularly when it is to be used for making high grade paper. Third, to provide a machine for treating pulp having these advantages which is simple and compact in structure and of large capacity, and also one which is economical to produce, is durable, and not likely to get out of repair.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention'by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
- Figure I is a plan view of a structure embodying the features of our invention. Fig. II is a detail view partially in longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. I. Fig. III is a vertical longitudinal section through the casing or cylinder proper. Fig. IV is a central transverse section on a line corresponding to line H of Fig. II. Fig. V is a transverse section on a line corresponding to line 55 of Fig. III, the rotary member 13 being removed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the reference numerals, the base 1 is provided with suitable bearing pedestals 2 for the shaft 3. The cylinder or casing 4 is mounted securely upon the base. The heads 5 of the cylinder or casing are removably secured thereto and are provided with inlet connections 6 to the inlet pipe 7 The cylinder is provided with a central annular channel or enlargement 8 with discharge 9. This channel 8 has manholes or cleanouts 10 on opposite sides of the cylinder. The cylinder heads 5 are provided with suitable bearings 11 for the 'shaft'3. The bearings have suitable'packing glands, the details of which are not described as they form no part of this invention. The walls of the cylinder are provided with a series of recesses 12. These recesses are preferably rectangular in form and are disposed spirally, the lead of the spirals being from the ends of the cylinder toward its central discharge.
' On the shaft 3 is a rotary member, designated generally by the numeral 13, having spiral blades thereon providing spiral channels or open passages 14. The lead of the spiral blades is from the inlets toward the discharge. The pitch of the outer portions 15 of the blades is substantially greater than that of the inner portions 16. The outer portions 15 of the blades, in practice, serve as feed portions, effectively forcing the pulp through the machine. The inner portions 16 of the blades are radially corrugated so that the channel through this portion of the member is zig zag. The zig zag surfaces of the walls of the channel constitute baffle surfaces. The rotary member is driven with high speed and the pulp is forced through the machine and out of the discharge thereof through its passage, and the lumps or clots of pulp are effectively broken up or disintegrated during the passage of the pulp through the machine. This disintegration or breaking up occurs Without any grinding vaction, the periphery of the rotary member beingadjacent to but spaced from the Wall of the cylinder so that no grinding action on the pulp occurs, although lumps or -clots are disintegrated and evenly distributed."
In the event ofstrings or threads or the like passing into the machine they are lodged by the centrifugal force over the bars 17, disposed longitudinally of the rotary mem ber across the channel 83 These bars can-be cleaned through the cleaning or manholes 19.
Our improved pulp treating machine 13 of large capacity. and is at the same time compact and may beconvenientlyinstalled Where desired.
It is especially desirable for'use when 1nst'alljed directly in advance of the d stributing screen of a paper machine, but 1t is advantageous when used between thebeaters and Washer or in other steps of the pulp treating process. It is wellundersto'edby experienced paper makers that sloiv stock"; that is, stock which has beentreated-to cause the fibers to lie close inthe' Web-, is necessary. for the manufacture "of high grade paper. Slow stock is ordinarily produced by long continued treatment in; the beater engine. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, the wall of the cylinder having a series of rectangular internal recesses therein, said recesses being disposed spirally, the lead of the spiral being toward the discharge, and a rotary member within said cylinder provided with a spiral blade, the lead of the blade being from the inlet toward the discharge, a portion of the blade being radially corrugated, providing a zig zag spiral channel. 7 i

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, the wall of the cylinder having a series of internal recesses therein, said recesses being disposed spirally, the lead of the spiral being toward the discharge, and a rotary member within said cylinder provided with a spiral blade, the lead of the blade being from the inlet toward the discharge, a portion of the blade being radially corrugated, providing a zig zag spiral channel.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, and a rotary member within said cylinder provided with a spiral blade, the lead of the blade being from the inlet toward the discharge, a portion of the blade being radially corrugated, providing a zig zag channel.
11. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, the wall of the cylinder having a series of internal recesses therein disposed spirally, the lead of the spiral being toward the discharge, and a rotary member within said cylinder provided with a spiral channel, the lead of the channel being from the inlet toward the discharge, a portion of the channel being zig zagged.
12. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, and a rotary member within said cylinder provided with a spiral channel, the lead of the channel being from the inlet toward the discharge, a portion of the channel being zig-zagged.
13. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, the Wall of the cylinder having a series of internal recesses therein, and a rotary member within said cylinder provided with a spiral channel of low pitch and substantial depth providing a passage for the material treated, the lead of the channel being from the inlet toward the discharge.
14. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, and a rotary member within the cylinder provided with a spiral channel of substantial depth providing a passage for the material treated, the lead of the channel being from the inlet toward the discharge, the channel at the inlet end being wider than at the discharge end, the walls of a portion of the channel being provided with battle surfaces.
15. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, and a rotary member within the cylinder provided with a narrow spiral channel of substantial depth providing a passage for the material treated, the lead of the channel being from the inlet toward the discharge, the walls of a portion of the channel being provided with battle surfaces disposed alternately and of such size as to provide a zig-zag passage.
16. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, and a rotarv member within the cylinder provided with a spiral channel of substantial depth providing a passage for the material treated, the lead of thechannel being from the inlet toward the discharge, the channel at the inlet end being wider than at the discharge end.
17. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet at each end and a central annular channel provided with a discharge and with manholes opening into the channel, a rotary member within said cylinder provided with spiral channels, the lead of the channels be ing from the inlet toward the discharge, and bars extended across the channel of the casing opposite the manholes thereof, all coacting for the purpose specified.
18. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet at each end and a central annular channel provided with a discharge and with a manhole opening into the channel, a rotary member within said cylinder provided with spiral channels, the lead of the channels being from the inlet toward the discharge, and a bar extended across the channel of the easing, all coacting for the purpose specified.
19. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, there being an annular channel at the discharge, a rotary member within said cylinder provided with a spiral channel, the lead of the channel being from the inlet toward the discharge, and a bar disposed across the channel ofsaid cylinder, all coacting for the purpose specified.

In a structure'ol the class-described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, there being-arrannular channel at the discharge, a rotary member within said cylinder provided with a spiral channel, the lead of the channel being from theinlet toward the'discharge, and a bar disposed withinsaid cylinder, longitudinallv of said rotarv 1116111l391','2lll coacting'for the purpose specified.
21. In a structure-ofthe class described, the combination of a cylinder provided with an inlet at each end and a central annular channel provided with a discharge, the diameter of the channel being substantially larger than that of the cylinder, and a retary member within said cylinder provided with spiral channels leading from each end toward the center.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of .a cylinder provided with an inlet and a discharge, and a rotary member within said cylinder: provided with a continuous narrow spiral channel of low pitch and substantial depth providing a continuous passage for the material treated, the walls oi? the channel being provided with alternately disposed baffle surfaces extending from top to bottom of the walls and adapted to deflect the course of the material passing through the channel.
23. In a structure of the class described,
