To all whom alt-may concern Be it known that I, MARQUIS H. LOCK- woon, a "citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, .and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-VVriting Machines, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to typewriter platen releases which are adapted to normally secure the platen and line space wheel together so that they maybe revolved in unison, but which permit the operator, .by manual means, to freethe platen from the line space wheel and revolve it independently thereof.
Devices of various kinds have been constructed for this purpose which are more or less satisfactory, but my invention relates more particularly to improvements in that type of platen releases employing an interlocking clutch adapted to look the parts together at any rotative position of the platen relative to theline space Wheel.
A platen release of this character will be found in the patent to Arthur WV. Smith, No. 860,834: of July '23, 1907, but the. object of my invention is, to simplify the construction and to so condense and arrange the parts that the entire device may be mounted on the end of the platen shaft; none of the parts being located inside the end of the platen.
My device, while adaptable to typewriting machines of "arious types is more particularly designed for and is shown in connection' with the platen of the well known Underwood typewriter.
One form of my deviceis shown in the accompanying drawings, in which only fragmentary parts of the typewriter platen and carriage are shown.
Figure 1 is a plan view partially in section; Fig. 2 is substantially a complete longitudinal section; F 3 is a plan view and partial section looking at the opposite side from that shown in Fig.1; Fig. 4 represents a cross section at H of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 shows one of the wedge members.

. the regular construction. In the present instance in carrying out my invention the axle or shaft 3 to which the platen 2 is secured, by the screw 2, extends into the end of a tubular hub 6 which is pinned to the end of the shaft at 7 and adapted to rotate therewith. This tubular hub is provided with a cupped or flanged disk 8 concentrically arranged adjacent to the bearing 1, in the platen carriage frame, through which the aXle of the platen passes. The flanged disk 8 is adapted to support on its periphery an annular line space wheel 9 which, as inclicated in the drawings, is provided with an internal flange adapted to seat in a corresponding angle groove 10 in the edge of the disk 8. p The opposite side of the line space wheel 9 is provided with an annular ring flange 11 in which an annular toothed ring 12 is seated and is securely held in place by suitable pins or screws 13, the construction being such that the line space wheel 9 is held in place on the periphery of the flange 8, but is free to rotate thereabout. The annular ring 12 is provided with one or more inwardlv projecting teeth l-l which, as indi cated in the drawings, are wedge shaped on their inner side and thereby adapted to freely enter the corresponding tooth spaces in a spur-toothed clutch member 15, which, as indicated, is provided with a plurality of straight teeth which have their lateral edges beveled off, as indicated, so as to facilitate cooperation with the beveled faces of the teeth 14. The teeth of both clutch members are therefore provided with straight faces and beveled faces, the beveled faces on each coming together in a thin edge so that the teeth of one member will readily enter between those of the other. WVhen the clutch members are in complete engagement the straight portions of the teeth are in contact and hence there can be no slipping of one member with respect to the other. The tooth clutch member 15 is provided with a hub 16 which is loosely mounted on the cylindrical hub 6 which, as previously explained, is secured to the end of the platen axle. The disk 8 on the hub 6 as indicated is hollowed out and is of suflicient diameter to receive therein the clutch member 15,

The clutch teeth 1 1, as previously explained, are secured to the. line space wheel, while the clutch member 15 mounted on the hub 6 is adapted to be secured to the platen as hereinafter explained, thereby permitting the provided for positively securing the clutch member 15 to the hub 6. The hub 16 as indicated in Fig. 1. of the drawings is provided with oppositely disposed elongated openings 19, one edge of eachv opening being at an angle to the axis so as to form inclined planes or wedging faces 20, against which faces thewedged lugs 21 secured to and extending from the ends of the wedge members 18 into the openings 19 are adapted to contact, and thus secure the clutch member 15 in its adjusted position relative to the hub 6. The hub 6 secured to the platen axle, is provided with longitudinal slots or grooves 22 in which the clutch members 18 are adapted to slide in order to accommodate the wedge lugs 21 thereof to the wedging faces 20, according to the position of adjustment of the clutch member 15. It will be understood that the wedge or cam faces 20, on opposite sides of the hub 16, face in opposite directions circumferentially or lie in substantially the same vertical planes, so that when the clutch member 15 is in its central position as to circumferential adjustment, the wedge members 18, with their wedging lugs 21, will lie substantially opposite each other throughout their length and the wedge members 21 will be practically at the middle of the cam or wedge The object of this lateral or faces 20. If, however, the clutch member 15, in coming back into engagement with the clutch teeth 14:, is forced to'the one side or the other of its central position, then one of the wedge faces 20 will be further away from its corresponding cam lug 21 than the other, with the result that it will be necessary for one wedge to slide farther than the other in order to permanently lock the clutch member in the adjusted position. It will be observed that in Fig. 2 the ends of r the wedge members 18 are not directly opposite, indicating that in the adjustments shown in the drawings the clutch member 15 is turned asmall amount to the one side of its central position, but the independent movement of the Wedge members 18 has enabled the wedges 21 to follow the respective wedge faces 20 and lock the clutch member in the position indicated. In order to get this variable adjustment of the Wedge member 18, the inner edges of the wedge carrying members 18 are provided, in the present instance, with gear teeth 23 which are adapted to mesh with a pinion 2% pivoted in the slotted end of the plunger 25 which is adapted to reciprocate in the'end of the tubular hub 6 and is normally pressed outwardly by a spring 26 which thrusts against the end of the axle 3, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. It will be seen that this arrangement of rack and pinion connection between the wedge members 18 permits independent movement of the wedge members whereby they are. adapted to accommodate themselves to the varying requirements according to the rotative position of adjustment of the clutch member 15 relative to the hub 6 when the teeth of the clutch member are in I engagement with the clutch teeth 11oarried by the line space wheel. The plunger 25 is preferably extended beyond the end of the hub 6 and is provided with a push button 27 which may be secured thereto in any suitable manner as by screw threads 27 shown in Fig, 1 of the drawings. This position of disengagement of the clutch member 15 is indicated in F ig. 3 of the drawings, in which position the platen may be rotated independently of the line space wheel; When in this disengaged position it is desirable that the clutch member 15 be new position of relative rotation between the platen and line space wheel which may ocour when the platen is rotated independently of the line space wheel for any new setting thereof. To centralize the clutch member 15, any suitable means may be employed, but I have shown the simple device of a screw '32 secured to the hub 6 and pro jecting therefrom into a triangular or V- shaped opening '83 in the hub 16, the position of the V-faccs being such that the clutch member 15 may be pushed entirely into the pocket in the disk 8 and thereby freed from the teeth 1i when the screw 3:2 arrives at the bottom of the V, as indicated in Fig. 3 Thus it will-be seen that from either position of adjustment one side or the other of the central position the clutch member 15 will always be brought back into a central normal position when disengaged from the cooperating clutch teeth of'the line space wheel.
Normally the clutch member and wedging members are in the position indicated in Figs. 1 andQ, but when the operator desires to release the platen from the line space wheel for any adjustment of the former with respect to the latter, the finger button 27 is pressed inwardly into the position as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, in coming to which position the wedge members 18 and 21 will first be forced inwardly away from the wedge faces 20 and release the clutch member 15, the end of thewedges 21 then striking against the ends of the open ings 19 will thrust the clutch member 15 back to the position of disengagement or into the pocket in the disk 8, as indicated in Fig. 30f the drawings, thus releasing the platen for independent rotation. During this operation the faces of the triangular or V-shaped opening 33 will, by means of the screw 32, centralize the clutch member 15, so that upon releasing the button 27, the springs l7 and 26 will thrust out the respective parts and reengage the clutch members so that the platen and-line space wheel are locked together to revolve in unison.
It will be understood that various modifications of details construction in the form of the device here shown may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
I claim 2*- In a typewriter platen release the combination of a platen, a line space wheel, clutch teeth on said line space wheel, a toothed clutch member adjustaibly connected with the platen and-adapted to cooperate with the clutch teeth of the line space wheel, and a pair of independently movable l wedge members adapted to secure said toothed clutch member in adjusted position when in mesh with the clutch teeth of said line space wheel thereby connecting the line space wheel and platen to be revolved in unison.
2. In a typewriter platen release the combination of a platen, -'a line space wheel, clutch teeth on said line space wheel, a movable, toothed clutch member provided with a pair of wedge faces, a pair of independently movable wedge members adapted to coiiperat'e with the wedge faces on said clutch member, and means for releasing said wedge members and moving said clutch member to connect and disconnect the platen and line space wheel.

In a typewriter platen release the combination of a platen secured to an axle, a line space Wheel revolubly mounted on said axle, clutch teeth on said line space wheel, a movable clutch member adapted to coiiperate with the clutch teeth of said line space wheel, said clutch member being adjustable to a limited extent either way from a central position, fixed means for centralizingsaid clutch member after disengaging the same from said line space wheel and means for moving said clutch member to disengage the same and thereby permit theplaten to be rotated independently of said line space wheel.

In a typewriter platen release the combination of a platen, a tubular hub member connected with the platen, a line space wheel mounted thereon, clutch teeth projecting from the line space Wheel, a. cooperating clutch member also mounted on said hub member in axial ali'nement with and movable toward and from said line space wheel, means permitting a limited rotary movement of'said clutch member to engage the clutch teeth of the line space wheel in any rotative position of the latter with respect to the platen and means connected with the platen through said hub member for preventing movement of said clutch member when in engagement with the clutch teeth of said line space wheel, thereby securing the platen and line space wheel together to revolve in unison.

In a typewriter platen release the com bination of a platen, a line space wheel provided with clutch teeth, a movable clutch member adapted to cooperate with the clutch teeth of said line space wheel, means for securing said clutch member when in engagement with the clutchteeth of said line space wheel, said means including a pair of indethe other, a spring for moving said movable clutch member in one direction, apair of slidable wedging members for preventing movement of the movable clutch member when the clutch members are in engagement said slidable wedging members during disengagement being adapted to move said movable clutch member in opposition to its spring, a spring for sliding said wedging members .in one direction and manually operable means for moving said wedging members and said movable clutch member in succession in opposition to their respective springs to release said clutch and permit rotation of the platen independently of said line space wheel.
8. In a typewriter platen release the combination of a platen, a line space wheel provided with clutch teeth, an axle support therefor, connected with the platen, a 00- operating clutch member slidable upon said support into and out of engagement with the clutch teeth of said line space Wheel,
said clutch member being also circumferentially adjustable relative to the platen and means for securing said clutch member in adjusted position when in engagement with said clutch teeth of the line space, wheel thereby connecting the platen and line space wheel to revolve in unison.

In a typewritenrelease the combination of a platen secured to an axle, a line space wheel, a hub member secured to the axle of the platen-,a disk integral with said hub member and adapted to revolubly support said line space wheel, clutch teeth secured to said line space wheel, a cooperating toothed clutch member, slidably mounted upon said hub member andpermitted a limited circumferential movement and means projecting through said hub member for locking said clutch member when .in cooperative engagement with the clutch teeth of said line space wheel. a
10. In a typewriter release the combina tion of a platen secured to an axle, a line space wheel, a hub-like member secured to the axle of the platen, a disk integral with said hub member and provided with an over hanging rim adapted to revolubly support said line space wheel, clutch teeth secured.

and wedging members slidably mounted in said hub-like member adapted by cooperation with said slotted hub, to lock said clutch member against independent movement when in engagement with the clutch teeth of the line space wheel.

In a typewriter release the combination of a platen secured to an axle, a line space wheel, a hub-like member secured to the axle of the platen, clutch teeth on the line space wheel, a cooperating clutch member slidably mounted. upon said hub-like member, said clutch member having a hub provided with wedge shaped slots therein, wedging members slidably mounted in said. hub-like member. adapted by cooperation with said slotted hub, to lock said clutch member against independent movement when in engagement with the clutch teeth of the line space wheel and a push button adapted. to release said wedging members and disengage said clutch'member in succession.

, a spring acting upon said clutch member to space wheel, a hub-like member secured to the axle of the platen, clutch teeth on the line space wheel a cooperating clutch member slidably mounted upon said hub-like member, said clutch member having a hub provided with wedge shaped slots therein, a spring acting upon said clutch member to cause its engagement with the clutch teeth of said line space Wheel, wedging members slidably mounted in said hub-like member and adapted to cooperate with the slots in the hub of said clutch member to lock the same against independent movement when in engagement with the clutch teeth of the line space wheel, a spring acting to move said wedging members into wedging position, and manually operable means for releasing said wedging members and moving said clutch member in succession to disengage the latter from said line space wheel, both of said springs being compressed thereby.

In a typewriter release the combination of a platen secured to an axle, a line space wheel, a hub-like member secured to the axle of the platen, clutch teeth on the line space wheel, a cooperating clutch member slidably mounted upon said hub-like member, said clutch member having a hub provided with wedge shaped slots therein, a spring acting upon said clutch member to cause its engagement with the clutch teeth of said line space wheel, wedging members slidably mounted in said hub-like member and adapted to cooperate with the slots in the hub of said clutch member to lock the same against independent movement when in engagement with the clutch teeth of the line space wheel, a spring acting to move said wedging'members into wedging position, intermediate means between said wedging members for equalizing the pressure of said spring and manually operable means 7 connected with said intermediate means for releasing said wedging members and moving said clutch member, in succession, to disengage the latter from said line space wheel. both of said springs being compressed.
