To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, HENRY WnLsoH, a
citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Containers and Holders Therefor, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a liquid container and holder therefor, and particularly to a liquid container adapted to. be secured upon the running board of a vehicle for the purpose of containing and transporting water, gasolene or other liquid.
()ne object of the invention is to provide a container which is adapted to be conveniently handled and transported when not secured in position, and to be fastened in position upon the runningboard against any possibility of casual displacement.
A further object of the. invention is to provide a container which is adapted especially for the transportation of water, and to be kept moist so that in the travel of the vehicle the evaporation of the moisture will keep the contents of the container cool.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a container which may be easily and quickly applied, and as readily released and removed.
The invention consists in the features ofconstruction and combination and arrangement of parts more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of my improved container mounted upon a running board, a portion of the container being broken away to better show the construction; Fig. 2 is a central vertical transverse section through the container; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the clamping band.v
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates my improved container, which may be made of sheet metal or other suitable material. Thiscontainer comprises a flat bottom 2, side walls 3, end walls 4 and a top wall 5, the said'top wall being a continuation of the end walls. The container as thus constructed is in the form of a narrow oblong rectangular body at its base and has its top wall curved or dome-shaped and provided with a suitable screw-threaded filling inlet and discharge outlet 6 closed by a screw cap 7.
The crown portion of the top or curved wall 5 of the receptacle is off-set inwardly to provide a groove or recess 8 and side flanges or shoulders 9, while the sides 3 of the receptacle are provided with substantially circular off-set portions 10, for a purpose hereinafter described.
The container 1 is adapted to be fitted at its base within a narrow oblong rectangular holding vessel ll, which vessel is suitably fastened to the running board 12 of the vehicle, retaining or keeper hooks 13 and 14 being provided at the ends of said receptacle, as shown. The upper marginal edges of the walls of the receptacle 11 are formed with strengthening beads 15, and the central portions of the beaded side edges of said receptacle are arranged to engage the off-set portions 10 of the side walls of the container, whereby the latter is frictionally engagedv and centered in position.
, Below the portions 10, the side walls 3 of the container preferably flare inwardly so as to provide a water-containing space or chamber 16 between the same and the walls of the receptacle 11.
The container is adapted to be held in position upon the running board by means of a clamping band 17, preferably made of spring metal, but which may be of leather or other suitable material. This band is adapted to extend at the ends of the receptacle and over and around the curved wall of the container 1 and to seat within the groove or recess 8, whereby the container will not only be held from upward movement but also against any tendency to lateral displacement or tilting motion. At one end the band 17 is provided with a ring-shaped fastening member 18 to engage the hook 13, and at its opposite end the band is provided with a ring 19 to engage the hook 14, said ring 19 being pivotally connected with a cam lever 20 pivoted at 21 to the adjacent end of the band, and arranged so that when the free end of the lever is swung outwardly the ring 19 will be relaxed and disengaged from the hook 14, while when said free end of the lever is swung inwardly the ring 19 will be drawn into engagement with the hook and its pivoted ends moved to a position in rear of the pivotal connection 21, so that the lever and ring will be self-locked in fastening position.
For the purpose of insuring the firm retention of the container against any possibility of movement, while at the same time securing the cap 7 against displacement, the

The container is provided on opposite sides of its crown portion with ears 24 to which are pivoted a carrying bail 25 having the usual roller grip or handle 26. An inverted U-shaped spring clasp 27 is provided upon the clamping band to receive and grip the handle 26, whereby the carrying bail may be turned downward to a non-interfering position and held in such position against displacement and prevented from rattling during the movement of the vehicle.
It will be evident from the foregoing description that the invention provi es a container which may be firmly fastened in position against independent motion or any tendency to rattling, and the closure of which will also be held from accidental opening or loss, while the construction of the fastening means is such as to permit the container to be applied and removed in a quick and convenient manner. It will, of course, be understood that the container may be employed for carrying any one of a number of kinds of liquids commonly carried by automobilists, such as gasolene, oil, Water etc. When the device is employed as i a holder for drinking water, it is desirable protect the to provide some means for keepin the container and water cool. This may accomlished by incasing the container in a sheathing 28 of some suitable heat-insulating and porous material, such as a covering of a mixture of felt and asbestos. The combination with a support, of a receptacle secured to the support, a container fitted at its base within said receptacle, said retainer being provided with oflset portions to frictionally engage portions of the walls of the ,receptaclei and having downwardly converging surfaces below said oflsets to form with the walls of the receptacle a water containing space, said container being further provided with aporous sheathing, and means upon the receptacle to hold the container seated therein. r

The combination with a support, of a receptacle secured to the support, a .container fitted at itsbase in said receptacle, said container having an upper curvedwall provided with a filling and discharge tube and a closure therefor, and a band secured to the receptacle and engaging said curved wall'to secure the container in position, said band having an opening for the projection of said filling tube and closure and a bridge piece extending over said opening. and adapted to bear against said closure.

8. The combination with a support, and a receptacle secured to the support, of a container fitted at its base within said receptacle and having a curved top wall set inwardly to provide a groove and marginal side flanges, said'container being also provided With a pivoted handle, retaining members at the ends of the receptacle, a band having means for detachably engaging said retaining members, and a. clasp upon the band to receive and engage said pivoted handle.
