W. G. NYMON.
WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 2, 1915.

WIGO G. NYMON, 0F ARGUSVILLE, NOR-TH DAhuL-A.
WRENCH.
Application filed February 2. 1915.
To all who) it may cum-cc lie it known that l, \Yioo (l. NYMoN, a eitizen of the lhlited States. residing at irgusville. in the county of Cass. State of North Dakota. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches: and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains. to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in wrenches.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a wrench which will be quickly and easily adjusted to various sizes and which will be antoinatieally held in any of its adjusted positions.
further object of the invention resides in the. construction of a wrench in such manner that the adjustment thereof may be exceedingly tine.
\\"ith these and other objects in view. such as will appea as the description progresses my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a lon itudinal sectional view of: my device, showing the position of the several operating parts. Fig. 2 is a. transverse sectional view on line Q- Z of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the position of the locking slide when the mo able jaw is being adjusted. Fig. 4 is a tragmental detail showing the shank gripping means.
Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views: The embodi ment of my device shown in drawing consists of a body portion 5 having detaohably secured to one end thereof a. handle (3 and formed integrally at the other end a stationary jaw T. Extendinglongitudinally of the body portion is a rectangular hole 8 which is enlarged at one end to form a chamber 9 and opens, as at 10, through the face of the stationary jaw 7. Slidably mounted in the hole 8 andextending through the ehamber 10 is a rectangular shank ll havirg a movable jaw it! formed on one end thereol adjacent the. stationary jaw T and ahead l3 on the other end thereof. of the shank ll on which the head 13 is formed projects outwardly from the body Specification of Letters Patent.
The end Patented Nov. 2. 1.)15.
Serial No. 5.754.
t e'cured to the slide 18 and extending outwardly from the body portion Ii through a.
slot 2+ is an operating handle 25 which when operated to compress the spring 21 will release the gripping a tion on the shank ll and allow the said shank to siide within the hole t. in order that this shank may be projected outwardly from the body portion, I ha ve provided a coil spring 21; within the hole 14- in the handle 3 which bears against the under taco ol' the collar 13. I
in order that the shock incident to the pushing oi' the shank ll outwardly by the spring 2b may be taken up. l have provided a spring 27 which encircles the end of the shank ll and is adapted to be engaged by the collar '13 on the shank 11 when the collar reaches the said spring in its movement through the hole It.
In operation assuming that the jaws T and 12 are in contact so that the wrench is closed and it is desired to adjust the same to fit a particular nut. the handle "1?.- is operated. so as to compress the. spring ll and draw the gripping il'ltnlbtl' it! away from the shank 11. The. spring 26 then causes the jaw 12 to 7. At
be pushed outwardly from the jaw this time the collar 13 will move into engagement with the spring 27' and spring 27 will take up the shock incident to the movement of the jaw 11. The handle may then be released and the movable jaw 12 pushed inwardly until the proper adjustment is obtained. The inward movement is allowed by the particular construction of the teeth on the gripping members 16 and 20 and because of the arrangement of the beveled end i! of the slide 18 and the inclined portion 17 of the chamber wall. When the jaw has been moved in the proper distance so that it will grip the nut which is to be turned it will be prevented from moving outwardly because of-the biting action of the gripping members 16 and 20 and because of the fact that any tendency to push .the shank 11 outwardly will also tend to bind the slide 18 more firmly against the shank 11.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a wrench which will be quickly and easily adjusted and one wherein the movable jaw is moved outwardly automatically from the stationary jaw upon the release of the locking pawl. I have further so constructed the device that any tendency to move the jaws apart during operation will only more firmly bind the locking member against the shank of the movable jaw.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I have merely done so for the sake of con venience and I do not wish to be lim ted to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made Within the details of constructii'm thereof Without .in any way departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
IVhat I claim is:-'
1. In a wrench, a body portion having a stationary jaw on one end thereof, a shank slidable through said body portion and having a jaw on one end thereof, means to lock the shank within the body portion, and means to autonmtically project'the shank outwardly from the body portion upon the release of the locking means and resilient means for absorbing shock incident to said projecting of the shank.
, 2. In a wrench, a body portion having a chamber therein, and a hole exteni ling therethrough, one wall of the said chamber having an inclined portion, a slide mounted within the chamber and having a beveled end adapted to ride on said inclined face, a gripping member on the opposite face of said chamber, a grippingmember on said slide, a shank passing through said body portion between said gripping members and having a jaw on the outer end thereof, resilient means for moving said beveled end of the slide in engagement with the inclined portion of the wall of the chamber to cause the gripping members to bite into the said shank, resilient means for projecting the said shank outwardly from the body portion upon the release of the locking means, and resilient means for limiting the outward movement of the shank and absorbing the shock incident thereto.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signa ture, in the presence of two witnesses.
