. Specification oi Letters Patent.
Patented Nov.- 2, 1915.
Application filed March" 18, 1914. Serial N 0. 825,602.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID J. WILLIAMS, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Herrin, in the county of Williamson and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Shades and Operating Devices Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved window shade and operating devices therefor by means of which the shade may be raised and lowered either from the top or the bottom of a window at will, the object of the invention being to provide improved devices of this character which are cheap and simple, may be readily installed and by means of which a shade'may be readily operated.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figurel is an elevation of a shade provided with operating devices constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the shade in lowered position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same showing the shade in raised po sition. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same.
In accordance with my invention I provide an upper shade roller 1 which is mounted in brackets 2 and is provided -in practice with the usual spring 3 and pawl and ratchet mechanism 4: for revolving the roller in one direction. Within the scope of my invention any suitable means may be employed for thus revolving the roller and thus permitting it to remain stationary at any desired adjustment. I also provide a lower roller 5 to which the lower end of the shade 6 is attached so that the shade may be wound up on the lower roller from the lower end of the shade. Cords 7 are attached to the lower roller and partly wound thereon in an opposite direction to the shade and are also attached to the upper roller. An operating cord 8 is attached to the upper roller and is partly wound thereon in such direction as to cause it when pulled downwardly to turn or revolve the upper roller against the tension of the spring. Cords 9 have their lower ends attached to the upper corners of the roller and these cords are also made in the form,
attached to the upper roller and wound thereon in the same direction as the operating cord 8. The cords 9 are hoisting cords.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the upper roller is turned against the tension of the spring by drawing downwardly on the operating cord 8 the cords 9 are unwound from the upper roller and lower the shade and at the same time the cords? are wound up on the upper roller and unwound from the lower roller and thereby cause the shade to be lowered from the upper roller and to be wound up on the lower roller and hence the shade uncovers the window, from the top. By permitting the upper roller to be revolved by its spring, which may be done by first slightly drawing the cord 8 the cords 9 and the said cord 8 are wound upon the upper roller and said cords 9 raise the shade, causing the same to be wound up on the upper roller and the cords 7 unwind from the upper roller and wind up on the lower roller thus causing the shade to be raised from the bottom to the upper portion of the window. The shade may be disposed at any desired portion of the window, either at the top or bottom, or at an intermediate point as may be desired.
Nhile I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In combination with an upper shade roller mounted for rotation and means to turn the same in one direction, an operating cord wound on the said roller in the required direction to cause said roller to revolve against the tension of said roller actuating means, when said cord is drawn downwardly; a shade, a lower roller to which the lower end of the shade is attached, hoisting cords connected to the upper roller and also connected to the upper end of the shade and cords attached to the upper and lower rollers for winding thereon.
2. In combination with an upper shade roller mounted for rotation and having a spring to revolve the same in one direction,
an operating cord wound on the said roller in the required direction to cause said roller to revolve against'the tension of its spring when said cord is drawn downwardly; a
winding thereon.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two WltIlBSSQS;
shade, a lower roller to which the lower end DAVID J. WILLIAMS. of the shade is attached, hoisting-cords con- =Witnesse's': i nected to the upper roller and also connect- A. J. WILL,
