BANE-FASTENING MEANS FOR WINDOW-SASHES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. SoHMIn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rocky River village in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pane-Fastening Means for Window-Sashes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pane-fastening means for window-sashes, and pertains more especially to pane-fastening means comprising sheet-metal strips which cover the edges of the pane to be fastened tothe frame of the sash and have each a loody portion which is U-shaped in cross-section and has its central member arranged opposite the adjacent edge of the pane and opposite side members thereof overlapping opposite sides respectively of the pane, with the outer side member provided with a flange which terminates in a lipjirojecting into the sash-frame toward the outer edge of the sash and in the direction of the inner face of the sash and with the inner side member terminating in a lip projecting into said frame'in the same direction so that the pane is desirably locked to said frame at the inner side-of the pane.
The primary object of this invention is to suitably lock the pane at its inner side to the frame of the sash.
Another object is to provide pane-fastening means which is not only simple in construction but convenient and reliable.
Nith these objects in view, this invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction, and combinations and relative arrange ment of parts, hereinafter described in this specification, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a .vertical section of a window-sash having pane-fastening means embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical. section of the frame of the sash illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the pane oi glass and the pane-fastening strips applied to said pane. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of a windowsash having my improved panefastening means. Fig. 5 is an inner side View ofthe pane of glass and the pane-fastening strips applied to said pane. Fig. 6 is a left'hand Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and a of said drawings, A indicates the'vertically spaced horizontal rails or members of the quadrangular frame of a window-sash, and B represents the stiles or vertical side members of said frame. Each frame-member is provided at the inner edge of the sash with a groove 10 arranged centrally between the inner face and outer .face of the sash and extending longitudinally of said framemember and from said edge of the sash toward the outer edge of the sash and in the direction of the inner face of the sash. Each frame-member is provided at the inner edge of the sash and between the groove 10 of said frame-member and the outer face of the sash with a laterally and outwardly facing shoulder 12 and has a guiding surface 13 between said shoulder and said groove, and said shoulder and said surface extend longitudinally of said frame-member. Each frame-member is provided at the outer face and next the inner edge of the sash with a groove lt which extends longitudinally of said frame-member and from said face toward the outer edge of the sash and in the direction of the inner face of the sash.

In Figs. 1 and 4 the pane C is shown in position. internally oi -the sash-frame and arranged between the outer face of the sash and. the shoulders 12 of the members of the sash-frame. and said pane extends opposite said shoulders, and it will be observed that said shoulders are parallel with the pane and are correspondingly spaced from said face of the sash, and that the guiding surface 13 of each frame-member is arranged at an angle to but faces the pane and slopes from the shoulder 12 of said frame-member to the groove 10 of said frame'member.
My improved pane-fastening means comprise sheet-metal strips which are arranged at and extend longitudirally of the edges of the pane (land comprise each a body-portion D which is U-shaped in'cross-section. Preferably the pane C is provided at each edge thereof with a sheet-metal strip having tiu. central member 15 of its body-portion D arranged opposite and extending longitudinally of said edge and having opposite side members 16 and 17 thereof overlapping the inner side and outer side respectively of the pane.
The outer side member 17 of the bodyportion of each pane-fastening strip is provided at the outer side of the pane C with a flange 18 which extends longitudinally of said strip and, as shown in Figs. 1 and i, from the-outer side of the pane to the outer face of the sash and terminates at said face in a lip .19 which extends longitudinally of said flange and projects into the groove 1 in the adjacent franic-mei'nber of the sash and consequently projects toward the bodyportion of said strip and in the direction in which the outer side of the central member of said body-portion faces.
The inner side member 16 of the body-portion of each pane-fastening strip extends across the guiding surface 13 of the adjacent member of the sash-frame and consequently slopes, as at 20, at a' point spaced from the central member of said body-portion, away from the pane C in the direction in which the outer side of said side member of said strip faces and, as shown. in Figs. 1 and 4,
abuts against said surface, and the sloping portion 20 of said side member of said strip is somewhat resilient and terminates in a lip 21 which. extends longitudinally of said strip and projects into the groove 10 of the adjacent member of the saslrframe and consequently projects into said frame-member and toward the outer edge of the sash and in the direction of the inner face of the sash.
By the construction hereinbefore dcscribcd it will be observed that the pane C is eiiiciently locked to the sash-frame at the inner side of the pane through the medium of the grooves 10 and lips 21, and I. would here remark that preparatory to the introduction of the pane into place internally of the sash-frame the pane'fastening strips are applied to said pane, as illustrated in Figs.
3, 5, 6 and 7, whereupon said pane and the pi *w-fastening strips are slid into place relative to the sash-frame. it will be observed that during the sliding of the pane and pane-fastening strips into place relative to the sash-frame the lips 21 of said strips come into engagement withthe sloping guiding surfaces 13 of the members of the sash-fraine so that the laterally sloping portion 20 of the inner side member of the body-portion of each pane-fastening strip yields toward the pane against the action of the resiliency of said portion of said side member, that said lip 21 of said side member as soon as said lip comes opposite the groove 10 in the adjacent frame-member during the application of the pane and pane-fastening strips to the sash-frame springs into said groove, and that When the pane C is in position internally of the sash-frame, with the inner side members of the body-portions of the pane-fastening strips abutting against the 1,1as,soe

Prefe ably the lips 21 of the pane-fastening strips have such length and relative arrangement that the lip 21 of each strip forms a joint at each end thereof with the lips 21 of the adjacent strips, as shown in Fig. 5. Preferably the lips 12 of the flanges 1b of said strips extend a iiproxiniately from end to end of the strips, as shown in Fig. 5. Preferably the side members 16 and 17 of the body-portions of the vertical] y arranged pane-fastening strips which extend along the vertical or side edges of the pane have such length and arrangement relative to the horizontally arranged slam-fastening strips which extend along the top and bottom or horizontal edges of the pane that said members of said vertically arranged strips extend between and into contact or close proximity to the side members of the horizontally arranged strips, but the central member 15 of the body-portion of each vertically arranged strip preferably extends between the side members .16 and 1'? of the bodyportions of the horizontally arranged strips, as shown in Fig. 6, and against the inner sides of the cent a .l members 15 of the said body portions of said horizontally arranged strips. lVhat I claim is:
1. In a w indow-sa sh, the combination, with sash-frame comprising top an (3 bottom 1nembers and side members, each frameanember being provided at the inner edge of the sash with. a groove extending longitudinally of said fra inc-member, said frame-member being also provided at said edge of the sash and between said groove and the outer face of the sash with a laterally and outwardly facing shoulder, and a pane of glass arranged internally of the sash-frame between the outer face of the sash and the shoulders of the members of said frame, of pane-fastening strips arranged at and extending logitudinally of the edges of said pane, each strip comprising a body-portion which is U- shaped in cross-section and has its central member arranged opposite and extending longitudinallyof the adjacent edge of the pane and has opposite side members thereof overlapping the inner side and the outer side respectively of the pane, the outer side member of thebody-portion of each strip being' provided with a flange which terminates at the outer face of the sash in a lip projecting into the sashframc, and the inner side member of said body-portion terminating in a lip which projects into the aforesaid messes groove in the adjacent member of the sashframe.
2. In a window-sash, the combination, with a sash-frame comprising top and bottom members and side members, each framemember being provided at the inner edge of the sash with a laterally and outwardly facing shoulder, and a pane of glass arranged internally of the sash-frame between the outer face of the sash and the shoulders of' respectively of the pane, the outer side mem ber of the body-portion of each strip being provided with a flange which terminates in a lip projecting into the sash-frame, and the inner side member of said body-portion terminating in a lip which projects into the sash-frame toward the outer edge of the sash and in the direction of the inner face of the sash.
3. In a window-sash, the combination, with a sash-frame comprising top and bottom members and side members, each frame member being provided at the inner edge of the sash with a groove arranged centrally between the inner face and outer face of the sash and extending longitudinally of said frame-member, said frame-member being also provided at the inner edge of the sash and between said groove and the outer face of the sash with a laterally and outwardly facing shoulder and having a guiding surface between said shoulder and said groove, said shoulder and said surface extending longitudinally of said frame-member, and a pane of glass arranged internally of the sash-frame between the outer face of the sash and the shoulders of the members of said frame, the shoulder of each framemember being parallel with the pane and the aforesaid guiding surface of said framemember being arranged at an angle to but facing the pane and sloping from said shoulder toward the aforesaid groove in said frame-member, of sheet-metal pane-fastening strips arranged at and extending longitudinally of the edges of said pane, each strip comprising a body-portion which is U- shaped in cross-section and has its central member arranged opposite and extending longitudinally of the adjacent edge of the pane and has opposite side members thereof overlapping the inner side and the outer side respectivelypf the pane, the outer side member of the body-portion of each strip being provided witha flange which terminates in a lip projecting into thesash-frame, and
the inner side member of said body-portion extending across the aforesaid guiding sur face of the adjacent member of the'sashframe and terminating in a lip which projects into the aforesaid groove in said framemember. \I
4. In a window-sash, the combination, with a sash-frame comprising top and bottom members and side members, each framemember being provided at the inner edge of the sash with a laterally and outwardly facing shoulder, and a pane of glass arranged internally of the sash-frame between the outer face of the sash and the shoulders of the members of said frame, of sheet-metal pane-fastening strips arranged at and ex tending longitudinally of the edges of said pane, each strip comprising a body-portion which is u shaped in cross-section and has its central member arranged opposite and extending longitudinally of the adjacent edge of the pane and has opposite side members thereof overlapping the inner side and the outer side respectively of the pane, the outer side member of the body-portion of each strip being provided with a flange which extends longitudinally of said strip and terminates at the outer face of the sash in a lip which projects into the sash-frame toward the outer edge of the sash and in the direction of the, inner face of the sash, and the inner side member of said body-portion terminating in a lip which projects into the sash-frame toward the outer edge of the sash and in the direction of the inner face of the sash.
5. In a window-sash, the combination, with. a sa sh-frame comprising horizontal top and bottom members 'and vertically arranged side members, each frame-member being provided at the inner edge of the sash with a laterally and outwardly facing shoulder, and a pane of glass arranged internally of the sasltframe between the outer face of the sash and the shoulders of the membens of said frame, of sheet-metal pane-fastening stripsvarranged at and extending longitudinally of the edges of said pane, each strip comprising a body-portion which is U- shaped in cross-section and has its central member arranged opposite and extending longitudinally of the adjacent edge of the pane and has opposite side members thereof overlap 'iing the inner side and the outer side respectively of the pane, the inner side member of the body-portion of each strip terminating in a lip which projects into the sash-frame, and the central members of the body-portions of the pane-fastening strips which extend along the side edges of the pane extending between the side members of the body-portions of the pane-fastening strips which extend along the top and bettern edges of the pane.
6. A sheet-metal pane-fastening strip ltd comprising a body-portion which is U- shaped in cross-section and is adapted to be applied with the central member of said opposite sides respectively of said pane, one
side member of said body-portion being providcd with a laterally and outwardly projecting flange which extends longitudinally of the strip and terminates in lip which extends longitudinally of said flange and projects toward said body-portion and in the direction in which the outer side of the central member of said bodyportion faces, and the other side member of said bodyportion terminating in the lip which extends longitudinally of the strip and projects in the direction in which the lip of the aforesaid fiange projects.

A sheet-metal pane-fastening strip comprising a body-portion which is U- shaped in cr0ss-section and is adapted to be applied with the central member of said body-portion arranged opposite and extending longitudinally of an edge of the pane of a window-sash and with opposite side members of said body-portion overlapping opposite sides respectively of said pane, one I side member of said body portion being provided with a laterally and outwardly projecting flange which terminates in a lip projecting toward said body-portion and in the direction in which the outer side of the central member of said body-portion faces, and the other side member of said body-portion sloping at a point spaced from the central member of the body-portion and away from the first-mentioned side member of said body-portion and having its sloping portion terminating in the lip projecting in the direction in which the lip of the aforesaid flange projects In testimony whereof, I sign the foregoing specification, in the presence of two witnesses.
