Description

WILLIAM H. BARWICK.
Improvement in Pipe-Wrenches.
N0. 5,678. Patented lune 6,1871.
Mmmm: WQ/m'w WILLIAM HENRY BARWIQK, OF MONTREAL, CANADA.
IMPRVEMENT iN Pll'eE'itllllElilCl-lESa Specification forming port of Letters Patent No. 115,678, dated June 6, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY BAR- WICK, of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Ganadznhave invented anew and useful Improvement in Bipe-Wrench 5 and I do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specilication, in which the figure is a side view of my improved wrench, and showing in dotted lines the wrench opened further to receive a larger object.
My invention is an improvement on the pipewrenches patented to R. Bain and Henry Getty April 9, 1867, and January 13, 1863,respectively. The invention consists in the construction of the jaws of the wrench to adapt them for holding pipes, broken screws, Ste., they being serrated or toothed, and formed at a particular angle to each other and their handles which adapts them for seizing and holding objects with a facility and security un-v equaled by others heretofore known or used.
A is the stationary or forward jaw, the face of which is serrated or toothed, and which is made solid with the handle B, from which it projects at an angle, as shown in the ligure. To the jaw A, at an angle where it meets the handle B, is pivoted the movable jawO, which is made longer than the jaw A, has its face serrated vor toothed, and is made with an angle or curve to form a seat for the pipe or other object to beheld, whatever be its size or shape. D is a handle, which is formed solid with the movable or rear jaw G, and is. so formed that it may be moved away from or past the handle B of' the stationary jaw A, according as it is required to grasp a smaller or larger object, as shown in full and dotted'lines in the ligure. By this construction the jaws A C will be moved toward each other to grasp a smaller object by moving the handle D to the rea-rward from the handle B, and said jaws A C will be moved from each other to grasp a larger object by moving the handle D forward toward or past the handle B. The wrench thus constructed will be strong, durable, simple, convenient, and compact, and adapted for various uses.
Havin g thus described my invention, claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The wrench, formed of the fixed jaw A, movable jaw C, both serrated, and having the particular shape and angle shown, and provided, respectively, with the handles B and D, all as shown and described.
