I BOTTLE-CAPPING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Bottle-Capping Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference-being had to the accompanying draw ings, in which like letters refer to like parts. The object of this invention is to improve the constructions of bottle capping machines, so as to reduce materially the compression required and,therefore, the breakage of bottles, and materially lessen the power required to operate the machine and the wear of the throat of the capping mechanism.
To those e'nds one feature of the invention consists in employing a plunger which is actuated only by gravity normally and by a cam if the gravity failsto actuate the plunger sufliciently to dislodge the -cap from the throat of the crowning head plate and providing means for limiting the movement of such plunger in both directions, one of said means being adjustable.
The invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion ofthe bottle capping machine, with parts in section and parts omitted. Fig.2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, but on a larger scale.
The drawings herein illustrate a type of bottle capping machine which is in practical use and has a base 10 and casing 11 with a driving shaft 12 and pinion 13 meshing with a gear 14 for causing the rotation of an annular, series-of tubular bottle supports 15. Said bottle supports reciprocate their upper ends through a table 16 andcentrally through said table a column 17 extends upward which carries the crowning head plates 18. Each of said plates 18 is integral with a casing 19 extending upward therefrom and secured to the flanges 20 by bolts 21,

After the cap 27 has beenfed into the throat 24 and upon the mouth of a bottle 25, said bottle is elevated by its bottle support 15 and the mouth of the bottle and the cap 27 are forced into the top of the throat 24 and thereby the crown forcibly secured on the mouth of the bottle. 4 The construction and operation may be of any well known .type.
In order to force downward and out of the throat the upper part of the bottle and the cap, a
plunger 30 is mounted in the casing 19 with a reduced lower end extending into the opening 26 so as to engage the cap and the top of the bottle and force them downward. In fact, the lower end of the reduced portion of the plunger 30 forms the ward movement by a nut 32 which screws into the upper part of the casing 19 and it is held in place by a lock nut 33. Hence the nut 32 receives the strain of the upward thrust of'the bottle support against the bottie and through it against the plunger 30. The limit of the upward movement of the plunger being adjustable by the means ex plained, the device is readily arranged so as to operate properly for crowning bottles which mav vary somewhat in size.

The bottle supports 15 are vertically movable by reason of being supported yieldingly' by the spring 135 on the lower member 136 and because said lower member 136 revolves, due to the movement of the gear 14, whereby the rollers 37 on the lower end of each member 136 rides upon the stationary cam plate 38.
The invention claimed is:
1.
