Description

muna PATENT firrron. A
HEhTRY BLMYER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,506, dated May 30, 1871.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HENRY B. MYER, of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have iny vented a new and useful Improvement in Gas- Burners; and I do hereby declare the followin g to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making part hereof, iii-which- Figure 1 is aperspective view of myimprovement, showing onewayin which it may be applied to the gas-bracket; also, showingthe interior arrangement of the base of the burner. Fig.2 is a vertical cross-section, showing the position and arrangement of all tlie'parts of a single burner. H p
My invention consists of a gas-burner having a water-tight globeof glass orother trans parent substance to contain a liquid which'isgenerally colored. This globe'has running through its middle a tube of any desired suitable substance, which passes through the body of liquid and conducts the gasto be burned from the base of the burner to the tip. The walls of this tube separate the contained gas from contact with the liquid, and this device is designed for use in show-windows of apothecary and other stores and for ornamental purposes. In the side of the globe I prefer to have an opening or month, by which the liquid above named may be changed at will. This opening is closed with a cap or stopper. If desired, the liquid may be inserted in the course of construction of the burner, and this opening or-Inouth-piece may be dispensed with.
To enable others: skilled in the artto make and use myinvention', I will describe its con-- struct'ion and operation.
The base A I preferto make of metal, havin g a screw-thread to screw onto the bracket in p the usual way. Into this base I set the tube has set in its upper end the tip 0. In the bot-' tom of this tube, or in the base, may be inserted a small coil or roll of wire, piece of wire-gauze,
D, or their equivalents, to regulate or modify the pressure of the flowing gas through the tip 0. Over this tube I now slide the globe E to contain the liquid. This globe is open at top and bottom to allow the tube B to pass up through it, and when the globe is in place the space around the tube B, at the points F F, is cemented, so that the interior of the globe is close and Water-tight, and-so that the liquid, when poured in through the opening or mouth G, may not escape. This month or opening,
as mentioned above is closed with a stopper,
H, or brass or other cap.
1 wish it to be distinctly understood that I do not confine myself to the mode above described of putting the parts together, as the hollow tube may be first cemented in the globe and then fastened or cemented in the base; nor do I confine myself to the shape of the globe E. A transparent hollow square or other difi'erently shaped transparent hollow body may be used and the same end accomplished. Thetube B need not be round; it may be of any other shape.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tube B, tip 0, globe E, and month G, when arranged and combined as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
HENRY B. MYER.
