To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. ANGSTER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Wausa, in the county of Knox, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Pullers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to a post puller.

An object of the invention resides in the provision of a device by means of-which posts may be successfully pulled from the ground.

A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that during its use the post will be automatically gripped.

With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevational view of my device, showing the parts in the positions they will occupy during the drawing of the post from the ground. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the parts in the positions they will occupy when the gripping members are being moved to a position to get a new grip upon the post. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a front elevation. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a fragmental detail of the gripping members.

Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views :-In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings I have provided a standard 1 which is bifurcated at its upper end, producing bearing members 2. Mounted on a shaft 3 is an operating lever 4 which has a handle portion at one end and a pair of diverging arms 5 on the other end. This lever is provided with a plurality of holes 6, through any one of which the shaft 3 passes so that the length of the power armmay be varied.

Pivotally mounted on the ends of the arms 5 are triangular plates 7, each of which is provided with a hole 8 between the ends of the lower edge thereof and with upwardly converging slots 9 and 10 adjacent the side Specification of Letters Patent.

edges thereof. Extending between the plates 7 and slidably mounted in the slots 9 is a U- shaped clamping member 11. The ends of this clamping member 11 extend through the slots 9 and are prevented from accidental displacement therefrom by burs 12 which are secured to the inturned ends of the member 11 and between which the plates 13 are located. A similar clamping member 1 1 is similarly mounted in the slots 10 of the plates 7.

Depending from the holes 8 in the plates 7 are links 15, each of which is bifurcated at its upper end and the resulting arms of which straddle the adjacent plate 7 and are secured thereto by a bolt 16 which passes through the said legs. A connecting plate 17 is pivotally supported on the lower end of each of the links 15 in a similar manner, that is, by a bolt 18 passing through the legs formed on the lower end of the links 15. Each of these connecting plates 17 has a pair of links 19 pivotally connected thereto which are at their other ends pivotally connected, as at 20, to the adjacent corners of the 'U-shaped clamping members 11.

Secured to the .bight portions of the clamping members 11 are gripping members 21 having upwardly inclined teeth 22 thereon.

Assuming that the post is being lifted from the ground and the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing the teeth 22 will penetrate the opposite sides of the post and the clamping members 11 will engage in the lower ends of the slots 9. At this time the handle end of the lever 4: will be on its downward movement. Now when the post has been partially drawn from the ground and it is desired to get a new grip thereon it is only necessary to lift the handle end of the lever A at which time the teeth 22 on the gripping members 21 will be disengaged in the post and the clamping members 11 will ride to the upper ends of the slots 9, at which time the links 19 will coact with the links 15 and throw the gripping members outwardly from the post. When the handle of the lever A is again lowered the gripping members 21 will again move inwardly and the teeth will engage the post so that it may be pulled farther from the ground.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a device for lifting posts from the ground and I have constructed clamping members so that they Will be automatically swung to and away from the post and gripping members which Will penetrate the post during the action of lifting the same from the ground, but Which Will ride loosely over the post when the clamping members are being moved to a position Where a new grip may be attained. Furthermore I have mounted the operating lever on the standard so that the leverage may be varied.

IVhile I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I have merely done so for the sake of convenience and I do not Wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is-obvious that numerous changes may be made Within the details of-construction thereof Without in any Way departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim. r
