To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J .unas FRANCIS EDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansdowne, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Daily-Date Signs, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of this invention are to provide an improved construction especially adapted to the practical requirements of daily date signs; to provide means whereby the pad may be conveniently and expeditiously applied to and removed from the back; to enable this to be done without taking the back from the wall where it is hung; to enable the leaves of the pad to be torn off-clean and completely by simply pulling the same downward; to thus secure a neat and pleasing appearance of the sign at all times; to secure a simple construction, which can be easily manipulated, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,

in which like numerals of reference 'indi cate the same parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a daily date sign embodying my invention, with a corner of the pad broken away to show one of the cross-pins holding its leaves; Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view of the back with the pad removed; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pad from its rear; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of one of the cross-pins for the pad, and Fig. 5 is a, sectional view taken on line A.A of Fig. 2.

In the specific embodiment, of the invention illustrated in said drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates a back comprising a supporting mount 2 of any suitable material to the front of which. is secured a head plate 3. Said supporting mount may be of any desired shape, here'shown as rectangular, and adapted to be hung 'upon a nail or the like'in longitudinally vertical position by means of a suitable hole 4: adjacent the middle of one of the shorter edges which may therefore be considered the top edge. The head-plate 3 is preferably attached to the supporting mount 2 only adjacent the upper edge, and for illustrative purposes I have shown screws 5, 5 inserted near the upper edge of the head-plate into the mount, although they might be otherwise placed or equivalent means employed. In any event, the arrangement and construction is substantially parallel to said lower edge, is

a slot 6 terminating short of the side edges of, the headplate. This slot is preferably formed by making a slit, without the removal of any of the material of which the head-plate is composed, and bending the margins adjacent said slit in opposite directions. That is,'the longitudinal upper margin or lip 7 of this slit is bent backward or inward toward the supporting mount 2 (see Figs. 2 and 5), and the margin or lip 8 on the lower side of said slit is bent or inclined outward, so that the slit presents an upwardly open slot oblique to the plane of the head-plate, as shown in .Eig. Said head-plate 3 preferably bears upon its face advertising matter 9 of a permanent character. It is intended that thesupporting mount with its head-plate 3 be not only attractive in appearance but permanent in construction and use, so that when once hung up on a wall there is no incentive or To be used with the back 1, I provide a daily date pad 10 which when exhausted can be replaced by another one of similar construction, said daily date pad being usable only in conjunction with the back 1, so that when .Wall space has been once acquired for the sign by the advertiser, the

user finds it most convenient'to retain the,

advertising backl because of its necessity to support the new pads which are subsequently furnished him. In the illustration of the invention shown in the drawings, this daily date pad 10 bears dates on its various leaves; however, it is not to be understood that the invention is restricted to pads bearing daily dates, but it is deemed within the scope of theappended claims to have any matter whatever on the leaves. It is preferable, also, to have the pad of substantially the same width as the advertising plate 3 so as to combine into a neat and attractive entity therewith.

For carrying the leaves of the pad, I provide a sheet metal cap 11 extending along the upper edges of the leaves from side to side thereof and having downwardly directed flanges 12, 13 at its front and back, respectively, which retain the leaves therebetween. Cross-pins 14, 14 are inserted adjacent the longitudinal ends of these flanges, from the front one 12 to the back one 13,

transversely through the leaves, whereby the cap 11 is secured for supporting purposes to the'said leaves. These pins preferably provide each a longitudinal cutting edge 15, see Fig. 4, which is directed uptype. These pads are manufactured in very large sizes, and when hungat a suitable height'itis often impossible to reach high enough, taking hold of the lower end of a leaf, to tip it clear up and tear it 03, unless one stands on a chair or something, and thus the importance of tearing the leaves off by a downward pull is apparent. It conduces to great convenienceand ease in properly removing the leaves of the pad. Furthermore, the cutting edges 15 of the pins 14 insure the clean tearing oil' of the leaves without any unsightly stubs remaining. The cross-pins 14 as shown in the drawings are provided with heads 16 in front of the flange 12 and are bent over or clenched hehind the back flange 13 to prevent outward displacement, but obviously other equivalent means might readily be substituted to effect the same result.

In order to rcmovably secure the pad 10- to the back 1, I have shown integrally formed with the back flange 13 on the cap 11, a tongue 17 depending centrally of the said back flange and preferably tapered or having its opposite endedges inclined in-- wardly toward each other. Itis also pref- .erablc to have the greatest length of said tongue substantially equal to the length of the slot 6 in the head-plate 3, said tongue being thus adapted to be inserted between the lips '7, 8, and removably attach the pad to the back. Thus when one pad becomes eX- hausted its cap 10 may be removed and thrown away and a new pad, intact with its cap, readily affixed to the plate 3 by insert-- ing the tongue 17 into the slot. Obviously it will be very easy for the user to apply the new pad 3 supplied him, and thus the back will retain its place on the wall permanently.

Having thus described the invention what I claim is -l. The hereindescribed pad for daily date signs, comprising in combination a plurality of leaves, a cap consisting of a piece of sheet material bent longitudinally into channel form with its intermediate portion lying upon the top edges of said leaves and its opposite parallel side flanges lying one in front of and the other behind the upper part of said leaves, the rear flange of the cap having a tongue depending therefrom substantially in the plane of the flange adapted to be exposed for entering a supporting slot by flexing the leaves, and cross-pins extending'through said cap flanges and leaves adjacent the opposite ends thereof connecting said flanges and supporting said leaves.
