Description

UNITED sfr-arias PATENT orinnig;l
y MEREDXTH G. STANDLEY, F CINCINNATI, OHIO.
' LEY,
at Cincinnati, 1n the county HAND-STAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 7, 1912. Serial No. 719,075. l
1'0 a whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, MEREDITH G. STAND- a citizen ofthe United States, residing of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain newand usefull Improvements in Hand-` QSt'amps, of which the following is a speciii- ["cationhreference being had therein to the n raccompanying drawing.
`This invention relates Ato hand Stamps and l has 'special reference to a stamp designed `for the purpose of indicating upon a bill or receipt the amount received and, at the same time, registering the same amount on a -pai per strip carriedv in the interior of the' casing.
Theprineipal object of the invention is 'to improve the construction or the stamps described in my co-pending applications bearing the Serial Nos; 696,675; 694,887;'
and 694,218. A n i `With the above and other objects in view Y as Will be hereinafter apparent the invenof parts.,l as" will be hereinafter ully de series o In the accompanying drawing v,ters of reference tion consists in general of certain novel con# v structions, combinations andA arrangements scribed, illustrated and claimed. n
like charac- Fig. 2 is is a sectionon the line Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view or' thev reversing mechanism for the ink ribbon. Fig. 5 a detail showing the front of the'casing.
In carrying outthe `objects of the invention there is providcda casing 10. The bottom of this casingy is closedby'a base 11 and the upper end of the casing is in like .manner provided with a closing plate 12H' project through an opening in the-casing.
Secured to `each oi? the indicator disks is a indicate like parts in the ""Jseveral views, and Figure 1 is a transverse -secti'onthro'ugh a! hand stamp constructed in 'accordance with this invention. 'a section at .right angles to Fig.V 1. j Fig. 3
gear 21 which meshes witn a respective gear 17 Just belowthe opening 13 thereis provided a shaft 22 whereon is revolubly mounted a series of type wheels 23 each provided with a gear 24 which meshes with a respec- Patented sept. 14, 1915.
'tive gear '17. Below the shaft 16 is ajshaft 25 provided withv a series of type wheels 26 each of which hasA formed thereon a gear 27. Each vof the gears 27 vnie'shesfwith a, respective gear 1,7 and the arrangement is such that the bottom character onthe lower type wheel, the top character'on the upper type wheel, and the character which shows through the opening 20 on the indicator Wheel will always 'be the same.
shaft 27.` On these shafts 26 and 27v are spools 28 carrying an inlcribbon 29 similar to the usual typewriter ribbon. y
Pivoted to the casing as at 30 are arms 31 which carry a rod 32 and project slightly above the casing where they 'are provided with a platen which extends over the top of the casing and is provided with astamp handle 34. The lower end of the arms 31 are connected to bellr crank levers 35 Which carry a rod 36. from one of the spools up through one of vthe "slots 14,' passing in its route over a rod 37 and is then led across theface of the 'pad 15 vand Cloj\\n"ovei-gtl1e rodi32 through'the otherv slotd'iifand beneath the rod 36 to the remaining spool2S. y"Depending fromgone arm of the bell crank lever 35 is apair of links 38 which carry a platen 101139.
Journaled }in *the casing- -are shafts 40 whereon are mounted spools 'il which carry strip oi' paper 42. To the endr of the bell crank lever 35 is connected a bar. which is provided with laterally extending arms 44. 0n the's'hafts'26and-'27 and oneof the shafts 4() are ratchets 45, the tWo ratchets on the shafts 26 and 27 being of opposite The ink ribbon 29 is led,
c b Journaled j 1n the casing adp. :ent the top is a shaft 2,6I and directly below this shaft is a second.
hand. On the arms 4 4 and the bar 43 .are
pa-wls 46 which engage the respective ratchets 45. Slidably mounted within the casing is a bar 47 having at its top and` bottom arms 48 which project over the spools 2 8. These arms'are so spaced that both arms Will con`v stantly be in contact with the ink ribbon.
The bar 4.7 is provided with a slot 49 and v adjacent this bar is mounted a bar 50 carryingl a pin 51 which projects Within the slot This bar 50 is provided at 'each end with a cam surface 52 and these cam surfaces pressed; this prints the required characters'- on the bill and, at the lsame time, the arms 31 cause movement of the levers 35. This iaises the platen 39 with the paper ribbon and brings this paper ribbon into contact with theink ribbon at the point where it crosses the lower type wheels. At the same time this action raises all the pawls. Now',
when the platen 33 is relieved from pres-A sure it again rises and the pawls will descend thereby actuating the respective ratchets.' It is to be noted that one of the pawls 46 is. always out of engagement so that the ink ribbon can be fed. Now, when one of the spools 2S becomes filled thel bar 47 will then move in one direction or the other by its filling 'until the pin 51 comes in contact with the respective end of the slot 49. This will cause movement of the bar 50 which will change the position of the cam surfaces 52 and thereby diseiigage tlie prethe kind described, and for the purpose A,
viously engaged. pawl and allow the pre- .viously disengaged pawl to drop into engagement, thus reversing the direction of movement of tlieribbonlf). There has thus been provided a simple and eiiicient device of specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is z- ,1. A hand stamp of the class described comprising a casing, type wheels carried by said casing, ribbon rollers carried by said casing the ribbon 'carried thereby passing lover said type wheels, recording strip-supporting rollers carried b v said casing, a platen roller positioned below one of said printing rollers, and means supporting said platen roller for drawing the same into engagement with one of `said printing rollers for causing animpression to be made upon said recording sheet.
2. A. stamp of the class described comprisiiig a casing, a plurality of ribbon supl pressed upon said casing.
casing, a guiding roller carried near the bottom ofV sair` casing, said ribbon passing over said guid rollers, ratchet means for turning said rib il rollers, a stamping'platen, a'rmssupporting said stamping platen, a
'bell crank frame pivotally secured to said casing and engaging said arms, depending links secured to said bell crank lever, .a
platen roller secured to said depending links,
a printing roller carried by the top of ysaid casing and adjacent the bottom of saidvcasing above said platen roller, record strip supporting rollers carried near the bottom ofV said casing, and said stampingplat'en adapted to cause said platen roller to be .porting rollers carried thereby, a plurality of guiding rollers carried by the top of said drawn up into engagement with said printo ing roller as said stamping platen is com- A device of the class described comprising a casing, a plurality of indicating disks carried by one sidev of said casing, a printing disk carried by the uppt-irl end of said casing, a printing disk carried near the lower end of said casing, an inking'ribbon for the printing disks carried by saidivcasing,l inking ribbon guiding rollers positioned upon said casing, said inking ribbon passing over said rollers and in front of said upper printing disk, a stamp platen, arms supporting said stamp platen, bell crank levers pivotally secured to the sides' of said casing and'capable of being swung thereon,
