EVERT TAKKEN, OF BOONE, IOWA.
GRIIPPING DEVICE.
Application filed. October 25, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVERT TAKKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boone, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gripping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gripping devices for use on merry-gorounds and similar machines or devices and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a merry-go-round provided with gripping devices constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the hollow tubular standard of the merry-go-round and showing my improved gripping devices in plan and in operative relation to said standard. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the band in released position.
My improved gripping devices are here shown as arranged for use in connection with a merry-go-round the standard of which is shown at 1. A revolving frame 6 is mounted on the standard and comprises a pair of parallel side bars 7 which extend across the sides of the standard. Said side boards are connected together intermediate of their ends by suitable transverse braces 8, while at the extreme ends, the side boards support seats 9 for the riders.
Controlled mechanism 16 is designed to be operated by one of the riders and is shown to include a rocking lever 17 pivoted at 18 to one of the side boards 7 and disposed adjacent to one of the seats 9 and within convenient reach of the occupant of the seat. The lever is provided with a hand grip 19, which may be engaged by the hand of the occupant so that the lever may be freely rocked, as required.
Embracing the standard 1 at a point above the frame 6 is a gripping band 20, which has one of its ends 21 secured to an intermediate portion of a lever 22. The opposite end 23 of the band is connected as at 24 with one of the extreme ends of said lever 22. The other end of the lever 22 is connected by a rod 25 with the rocking lever 17. The
Specification of Letters Patent.

lever 22 is provided with a plurality of adjustable screws 26, which are disposed between the ends 21 ancl 23 of the gripping band and arranged with portions 27 projecting beyond one side of the lever and adapted to engage in surfaces of the standard 1. From the construction of the apparatus as described, it is seen that the frame is designed to support two occupants. After the occupants are seated and the frame properly balanced through the weight of the occupants, one of the occupants actuates the lever 17 so as to move the lever 22 in one direction with a resultant tightening of the band 22 and in advance of the portion 27 of the screws 26 into thev standards. A slight twisting action is effected through the application of pull to the lever 22, and. as a consequence thereof, the frame 6 will be revolved. When the lever 17 is rocked in an opposite direction, the band 20 is released from its gripping action to permit the frame 6 to revolve for a considerable period of time.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minordetails of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
I claim In a device of the class described a cylindrical element, a band around and adapted to be turned on and with respect to the cylindrical element, a lever to which the ends of the band are attached in spaced relation and a plurality of set screws carried by the lever spaced apart and independently adjustable with relation to the cylindrical element, said spaced set screws being in the space between the ends of the band.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EVERT TAKKEN.
Witnesses EDWARD DoMsoH, GLADYS WILEY.
