To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, IRVING '1. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle Safety Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates more particularly to a device adapted to preventaccidental removal of the contents or part thereof of a bottle or other container.

It is very common for accidents to happen and often death results from a person taking the wrong medicine from a bottle by reason of the fact that there is no means provided to notify the person that the bottle contains one kind of medicine as distinct from another, and particularly is this so where poisonous preparations have a similar appearance. v

One of the principal objects of the invention to provide means which may be applied to a bottle or other container in such a way that access cannot be had to the contents of the bottle except by some particular or fixed manual manipulation sufficient to attract the attention of a person who desires to have access to the contents within the bottle, thereby avoiding all liability to accidents due to taking a part of the contents of the bottle by mistake.

Another object of the invention is toprovide a device which forms a sort of cap or cover for the bottle and which has to be removed before the bottle stopper can be removed.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device which is inexpensive to manufacture and which may be made to form an attractive cover for the bottle.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through th device, partly in elevation, showing the same as applied to one form of bottle; and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the device detached from the bottle.

and may have a bottle lip or rib 11 at the bottle mouth and a stopper 12, all of which may be of the usual or of any preferred construction.

A device 13 having a member 1a substantially cup-shaped in form and forming a cap of suflicient size to extend entirely about the bottle mouth and over the stopper is provided. This member 14: may be of sheet metal or of any suitable material and of various shapes and ornamented or not as de sired for the purpose of making the same attractive in appearance. The member 1 1 has a plurality of engaging members or devices These engaging members 15 are pivotally held to lugs 16 on the cap member 15 or otherwise arranged, and each has one end, as 17, formed as a hook adapted to engage under the shoulder 18 of the bottle rib 11 and its opposite end extending inward to substantially the center of the cover member 14-. its shown. there are three engaging members 15 and they are so arranged as to have their ends 19 overlapping substantially centrally of the member 1a in order that when the upper one is depressed, the three members will be moved on their pivots. Each member 15 may be provided with a spring tending normally to hold the same in engaging position, or a single member, when its end is the lowermost one, may have a spring, as 20, for restoring the same to its normal engaging position, and in doing so will restore the other members by reason of the ends 19 overlapping each other.

The member 14 is provided with a small opening 21 through which a pin or similar device may be projected so as to engage the uppermost of the overlapping ends 19 of the devices 15. It will be evident (that when this is done, the levers or members 15 may be moved on their pivots to throw the engaging hooked ends 1'? away and out of the path of the shoulder 18 of the bottle rib 1]., thereby permitting the entire device 18 to be detached, and thus permitting access to be had to the bottle by the removal of the stopper 19.. As soon as the device 13 is detached from the bottle, the spring 20 will restore the members 15 to their normal engaging position so that after access is had to the bottle, the device may be attached thereto again by simply forcing the same over the bottle rib 11 when the hooked ends 17 will again engage the shoulder 18 of the bottle and prevent access to the bottle unless the members 15 are again released.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that the member 1% cannot be detached except by manual manipulation and this will serve to notify a person that there is poison within the bottle or that the bottle or other container has certain contents to which some special attention must be paid and thereby accidental access to the bottle is prevented.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The combination of a bottle, a stopper for the mouth thereof, a substantially cupshaped shallow member forming a cover over the bottle mouth and stopper and provided with a small central opening, and a plurality of lever-like engaging members pivotally held intermediate their ends and radially arranged within the cover and having hooked ends adapted to engage part of the bottle mouth to detach-ably hold the cover member thereto within said cover memher, said engaging members having parts thereof provided with hooked ends substantially vertically arranged and other parts thereof horizontally arranged with the free ends of said horizontal parts of the said engaging members overlapping and disposed at the center of the cup-shaped member under the opening therein to adapt a small tool to be inserted through said openings and simultaneously move said engaging members to release said members to permit the removal of the cover member.

The combination of a bottle, a stopper for the mouth thereof, asubstantially cup shaped member forming a cover over the bottle mouth and stopper and provided with an opening, and a plurality of lever-like engaging members pivotally held intermediate their ends and radially arranged within the cover and having hooked ends adapted to engage a part of the bottle mouth to detachably hold the cover member thereto within said cover member said engaging member having parts thereof overlapping and disposed under the opening therein to adapt a tool to be inserted through said openings and simultaneously move said engaging members to release said members to permit the removal of the cover member.

3. The combination of a bottle, a stopper for the mouth thereof, a substantially cupshaped member forming a cover over the bottle mouth and stopper and provided with an opening, a plurality of lever-like engaging members pivotally held intermediate their ends and radially arranged within the cover and having hooked ends adapted to engage a part of the bottle mouth to detaehably hold the cover member thereto within said cover member, said engaging member having the parts thereof with hooked ends substantially vertically arranged and other parts thereof horizontally arranged with the free ends of said horizontal parts of the said engaging members disposed under the opening therein to adapt a tool. to be inserted through said openings and move said engaging members to release said members to permit the removal of the cover member.
