To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDE DOM, a citizen of the United 1415 P'ullan avenue, Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ghio, have invented a new and useful Perforator, of which the following specification is a full disclosure V f The invention relates to an improvement in perforators and primarily to a hand operated type for desk use in perforating sheets of paper. As disclosed, it provides a perforator, very simple in constructiomwith a few number of parts, bled, and of increased durability over others in the commercial field for similar purposes. In the style represented, the punch supporting members are integral with their supporting base fora definite punch spacing;
Other styles for a selective punch spacing, having their punch containing heads adjustable, are. comprehended and within the as pect of this invention, which is primarily directed to the devices for reciprocating'the punch members and in the punch or its shank construction.
An object of the inventlon 18 to provide a.

Adjacent each side of the shaftengaging tooth of the punch member, I provide opposite flank surfaces, each having a radius approximately equal to the radius of the shaft, adapted alternately to shoulder upon the shaft circumference, resistingly to confine the punch movements.
A further object of the invention is to provide handle arms for the punch operating shaft, interlockingly registering with the shaft, to rigidly fix the arms thereto, by forming the shaft receiving apertures of each arm of an outline similar to the contour of the shaft, keying therewith at any point throughout its length.

The perforatoras illustrated provides a base 1, and two punch supporting heads 2, 3, cast integral with the base 1, but such construction is only incident to a particular style, it being obvious that the invention herein is applicable in any form of head construction or its method of mounting. The heads and'their base mayv also be made of sheet metal stampings instead of from east material. Each head has its lower portion elongated forwardly and slightly raised from the upper surface of the base terminating with the slot 45, out into the head as a paper receiving throat beneath the punch members. The gage of the slot is usually of a degree within a safe capacity that the parts of the device will withstand. The throat divides the punch and die elements or members of the perforator, the die herein being represented by an orifice 5 in the base, in registry with the movable punch member mounted in the head. The die, however, may be in the nature of an insert, removably secured in position and of various design of perforating outline. The circular form herein illustrated is of the most common demand for this type of perforator. Each punch 6 has an enlarged diameter shank portion 7 sliding within a corresponding diameter bore in the punch bearing 2. Such difference in the punch diameter provides a recess at the base of said bearing bore to receive a spring which engages against the shoulder at the end of the shank portion 7 for urging the punch to its normal position. The shank 7 of the punch is milled to pro vide a tooth 9, extending transversely to the punch axis with the clearance for the tooth flanks cut in arcs from the base of the tooth toward the periphery of the shank and each preferably of a radius approximately equal to that of the rock shaft 10, which shaft journals in the heads normal to the punches. The shaft has a longitudinal groove 11 into which the tooth 9 meshes for reciprocating the punch with the rocking motion of the shaft. A single tooth engagement with the shaft in the form shown enables the production of periphery provide stroke limits for the moving parts in either direction. This is're lieving to the'spring in a perforating stroke 7 of the punch at the stroke limits. This is very advantageand withstands the rough usage to which it ous and increases the life of the perforator is frequently subjected. The single tooth connection presents quite an advantage in assembling the punchesas no error can be made as to the relative alinement or plane of the punch ends.

The groove. also provides a means for rigidly connecting the handle arms 12, 12, to the shaft. The handle arms comprise sheet metal stampings bent into shape and joined at their free end by a stamping knob 18. Thearms and knob can be made integral and bent into desirable shape. The ends of the arms connecting with the shaft are of circular outline and apertured to receive the shaft and provided With a lug 14,
