Description

UNITED STATES OPATENT OFFICE.
RIGHARDH. wILLET, on WASHINGTON, DISTRICT or COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD PAVEMENTS.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,895, dated May 16, '1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, RICHARD H. WILLET, of the city and county of Washington, and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wooden l a perspective view of one ofthe blocks.
The nature of my invention consists in making the blocks wider at the middle than at the ends, so that when embedded upon a layer of sand for a foundation, and having a concrete composed of asphalt or tar and sand between them, they will form a double wedge of the filling, which will prevent the blocks either being pressed down by weight upon them or being forced upward from any power from below.
In the drawing, Fig. l, A represents the blocks; B, the sand foundation; C, the concrete between the blocks; l), the level surface of the roadway.
Construction. After the proper preparation of the roadbed a suitable thickness of sand is to be spread evenly upon the same, and, the estab'- lished crowning ofthe cross-section completed, the blocks are to beset up as represented in Fig. 1, so that about one-half an inch may be kept between them at their widest section at a, but close together across the road-bed. As the courses are set up the concrete, ready prepared, should be poured between, and, thus uniting them when cold, will form a double wedge, having the smallest part in the middle.
-It will be evident, from inspection of the drawing, that there can be no possible chance for the blocks to be moved after the mass of concrete shall have become firmly compacted, and, if they shall have beenproperly settled and prepared, no downward movement can result.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is-
The blocks A, formed of' a double wedge shape, with the widest part at the iniddle, to be embedded in a concrete composed of sand and asphalt or tar, andplaced upon a foundation of sand, substantially as and for the purpose described.
RICHARD H. WILLET.
