To all whom it may concern: v Be it known thatl, MADISON R. CHEsNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, county of Jackson, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Jumping Toys for Advertising and Entertainment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a true,clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the arts to which it appertains to make and use the same. i

The invention relates to toys and has for an object to provide a toy of simple construction which consists of few parts, can be cheaply manufactured, and which is of the jumping variety and will afford great amusement for children being also readily adaptable for use in advertising and the like.

The invention comprehends among other features the provlslon ofa plurality of relatively associated similar members connected by an elastic member which results in a relative movement of the members so that the toy when folded and released will jump to an open and upright position, the operation of the toy in assuming an unfolded or upright'position from its. normally folded position being one which will afford great amusement to children whereas the device can also be conveniently adapted for various advertising purposes by having the advertisement placed on the exterior faces of the members so thatit will appear when the toy assumes its upright and open or up.- standing position.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the 7 views, and in which;

' Figure 1 is a perspective view of the toy showing the same in an open or upstanding position, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the toy prior to releasing the same, Fig. 3 is a view looking at the under side of the members forming the toy the same being spread apart or flat, Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through'the toy.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, I disclose a plurality of similar members 10 which are preferably cut out of cardboard, celluloid or some other similar convenient materlal to simulate an animal or any other figure such as a human being,

horse, elephant or the like. The members 10 each have similar edges 11 overlapped by a connecting strip or tape 12 preferably, made of cloth and which is pasted or in some other manner" secured to the inner faces of the members 10 overlapping the edges 11 as mentioned. Resilient tabs or flaps 13 are provided and are preferably struck or cut from the members 10 said tabs being opposed and having their inner por tions formed integrally with the members i 10 adjacent to aplurality or pair of openings 1 f formed in said members. An elastic member-15 such as a rubber band'is passed over the tabs 13 as shown to pass through the openings 14: with portions of the elastic member 15 extending transversely to the inner end of the tabs 13, said elastic member 15' thereby connectingthe members 10 adjacent totheir points of connection through c the medium of the flap 12.

} Now in the use of the toy describedthe same is unfolded so that the members .10 will lie relatively flat and the members'are then folded back upon eachother thereby placing theelastic member 15 under tension and-stretching the same beyond its normal position or elasticity. WVhen the members have been bentbackwardly.upon each] other as shown in Fig. 2 and are held in this position by placing the fore-finger upon one of said members, the permostmember thus permitting the elastic. member 15 to act andwhich in returning to its normal position exerts a pull upon the tabs 13 thereby causing the members 10 to movefrom their positions into anopening position and which will result in'the mem bers' being raised from a table or flat sur face upon which'they repose so thatthe members will assume or jump intoan up; right or standing position. Now in cases where the members consist of animals or figures simulating animals such as an elephant or the like it will be. clearly seen finger is removed from the up that when the toy is released from a backdescription it will" thus be seen that the toy described consists essentially of two similar members simulating figures such as animals or the like and which are connected by a fiap of cloth along their inner edges so that they will be relatively hinged, a suitable elastic member being provided to connect the animals or members through the medium of suitable tabs struck from the halves or members so that when the members are folded rearwardly upon each other by being bent upon the cloth or flap 12 the elastic member will be placed under tension and extending across the point of connection of the members will when released exert a pull to cause the members to swing toward each other thus causing the device to jump from the floor and whereby the members will assume an upstanding position as clearly shown in Fig. 1 said members having their free ends or edges moved toward each other just sulficient to release the tension on the elastic member and whereby said free edges will constitute the bases to support the members in an upstanding position.

It will be clearly understood that I do not limit myself to the particular construction set forth, but various changes may be made from the structure shown in the views without departing from the spirit of the invention; that the members can be made of cardboard, wood, papier-mach or any other suitable material and that the scope of the invention is defined by the appended claims.

Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A toy comprising a plurality of similar hingedly connected members each having a figure thereon, with the said members adapted to be folded back to back and having the heads of the figures adjacent the hinged connecting portion of said members, and an elastic member connecting said members and extending across the hinged connecting portion of said members whereby they will relatively swing apart on their hinged portions and assume an upstanding position.

2. A toy comprising a plurality of similar fiat hingedly connected members each having a figure thereon, with the head of the figure on each member lying adjacent to the hinged connecting portion of the members, said members being adapted to be folded back to back, and elastic means associated with said members and extending across the hinged connecting portion thereof to relatively swing the members on the hinged portion and cause said members to assume an upstanding position.

A toy comprising a plurality of similar members, a hinge member, said members each having a similar edge adapted to abut when the members are folded back to back, with said hinge member connecting with said members and holding said edges together, and an elastic element for swinging said members out of their folded position to an upstanding position with opposite edges of said members forming bases to support said members in upstanding position, said element traversing the hinged member.

4 As a new article of manufacture, a toy comprising two fiat members, a flexible strip connecting similar edges of said two members whereby said two members can be folded back to back and have their faces abut, and an elastic element connecting with said members for swinging the same apart from their folded position along said flexible strip whereby said members will assume a relatively upstanding position, said elastic element traversing said flexible strip.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a toy comprising similar hingedly connected fiat members having figures thereon, said figures extending toward the hinged connection of said members, and an elastic connecting said members to swing them from a relatively folded position into an upstanding position, with similar edges of the said members forming the bases for supporting the mem bers in upstanding position said elastic element extending transversely to the hingedly connected portions of the members.
