To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, BURTON R. PETERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and'Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in scaffolds, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of the invention is to facilitate the erection of scaffolds, such as are used in connection with the erection of buildings, and the adjusting of the platforms thereof to various distances above the ground as the height of the walls of the building is increased.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from the following description taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective of an embodiment of the invention surrounding a building. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective of one of the uprights, contracted, and also showing the means for adjusting the floor supports. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective of the brace rods and one of the uprights. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of the brace rod coupler also showing fragments of brace rods connected thereto.
The device is chiefly intended for use in building construction, although it may be used in connection with any work in which a scaffold is required. When erected or set up, the device, herein designated generally by a, surrounds the building 6 so that the workmen on the various platforms hereinafter described, may have access to the various walls of the building,

The adjustable platform supports are designated generally by e. In use, the number employed of these supports will invariably be governedby the height and character of the structure which the device is used in connection with. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each platform support may include two cars or trucks made up of shafts 12 journaled'in flanged wheels 13, which bear on angular treads 14, on the verticals 5 and have their corresponding ends connected by cables 15 which form supports for the tread boards 26, shown in Fig. 6, and which are drawn taut, by turning the shafts bymeans of the crank handles 16; return movement of the shafts being prevented by pawls 19, carried by plates 17 which slide on the verticals 5, and in which the shafts 12 have bearings, and ratchet wheels 20 secured to the shafts l2.
As shown, the structure is provided with upper and lower platform supports which scaffolds is shown in Fig. be observed that cables or may be raised or lowered either independently or simultaneously. For purposes of illustration, I have shown an arrangement for raising and lowering the said platform supports simultaneously, although the structure is shown as associated with Figs. 1 and 2 only. 21 indicates sheaves in the upper frames 4:, and 2222 indicate drum. shafts on remote faces of adjacent uprights and at the lower end portions thereof. 23, 23 indicate cables trained over the sheaves 21 and connected at one end to the drum shafts 22 and also connected by clamps 23 to the shafts 12 of the upper and lower cars or trucks, or the shafts 2728 as the case may be. With this construction it will have been observed that when drum shafts on adjacent uprights are turned so as to wind the cables thereon, the upper and lower cars on the said uprights will be raised. In this connection it will have been observed also that the truck shafts do not turn but the wheels 18 move on the tracks 14:, thus carrying bodily upward, the cables connected to the shafts and the parts carried by the cables.
A convenient method of arranging sub- 1, wherein it will wires 25 extend through the building so as to admit of arranging a scaffold for the operators on the interior of the building. These wires 25 have their opposite ends suitably secured such as by clamps 26, to the wires or cables 15 so that when the wires 15 to which they are connected are raised and lowered, the said wires 25 will also move. What I claim'as new is:
1. In adjustable scaffolding, the combination with a plurality of uprights, braces connecting the uprights, flexible elements extending between the uprights, means carried by the uprights for tensioning said flexible elements, a shaft on which the flexible element is wound, means for rotating the shaft to tension the element, wheels mounted upon said shaft and adapted to travel longitudinally of the upright, and manually operable means carried by the upright and connected to said shaft for mow ing the latter longitudinally of the upright.
2. In an adjustable scafiold, the combination with a plurality of uprights,braces connecting the uprights, flexible elements extending between the uprights, shafts on the uprights and upon which the flexible elements are wound, wheels mounted upon the shafts and adapted to travel longitudinally of the uprights, means for rotating the shafts for tensioning the flexible elements, and means for holding the shafts against rotation when the flexible elements are placed under tension, and means carried by the uprights and connected to the shafts for moving the latter longitudinally of the uprights.
