JAR CLOSURE. APPLICATION HLED SEPT. 16. 1914.

LESLIE UFFNEn, or INDrANAQrENNsYIJvAN IAQ v A LO RE.
Application filed September 1s, 1914. Serial No. 862,019 a To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESLIE RU'FFNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indiana, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ar-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to jar closures and more particularly to a closure of the screw cap type.
The object of the invention is to provide a closure of this nature so constructed as to present a considerable bearing surface at its lower edge and to combine therewith a rubber packing ring of peculiar formation coacting with the cap to provide a fluid tight joint between the body of the jar and the lower edge of the screw cap.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawing? Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a jar having the improvements applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rubber ring.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 5 designates the body and 6 the neck of a fruit jar of the usual and well known type having a substantially horizontal shoulder 7 between the body and the neck. Jars of this type are provided with screw caps 7 and millions of these jars are in use among housewives at this time and it may be here stated that it is a particular object of the present invention to so construct the new screw cap and rubber that it may be used upon the jars already in use. Y
In carrying out the invention I provide a flat packing ring 8 preferably of rubber and provided with a semi-circular or oval rib upon its upper face adapted to enter a correspondingly shaped recess in the under face of thescrew cap. To provide for this recess I out-turn themetal of the lower edge of the cap and'form the recess 9 therein and within which recess the rib 1O lies when the cap is screwed upon the jar as hereinbefore stated. In the jars of this nature with which I am familiar ithas been customary to provide a perfectly flat rubber ring without an upstanding rib thereon andvagainst which ring the sharp lower edge of the screw cap is forced with great pressure when the cap is placed upon the jar. With such structure the rings. are sometimes cut by the edge of the cap and at other times they creep under the turning action of the cap so that the cap does not contact with them all around and air is permitted to enter the jar with the result that the contents thereof ferment and spoil.
By out-turning the lower edge of the sheet metal screw cap to form the horizontal flange 11 a flat and wide surface is opposed to the shoulder 7 between which the rubber ring is clamped without the danger ofthe cutting thereof and the provision of the rib 10 holds the parts in proper alinement while the cap isbeing screwed into place, prevents transverse creeping of the ring and aids in the formation of a tight joint.
From the foregoing description it will be i seen that simple'and efficient means are herein provided for'accomplishing the objects of the invention but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise'construction set forth but includes within its purview such changes as come within the scopeof the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim is e 1. In a device of the character described the combination with a jar comprising a body portion and a threaded neck portion with a horizontal shoulder therebetween, of.

body portion and a threaded neck portion with a horizontal shoulder therebetween, of a sheet metal screw cap having its lower edge out-turned to provide a horizontal flange, said fiangehaving an underside annular recess therein and a paokingring of rubber comprising a flat body portion Which When in use is clamped between said flange Copies of this patent may be obtained for fivecents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, I).
