Description

B. GIROUX. wmnow SCREEN.
Nd. 114,548. Patented May 9, 1871.
F27 A A idnitrh sine BENJAMIN GIROUX, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS."
Letters PatentNo. 114,548, dated May 9. 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SCREENS.
The Schedule aimed to in these LettenPatont and making put of the semi.
To, all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN GIRQUX, of Chicago, in the county'of Cook and State of Illinois, have'invented a new and improved Window-Screen; and I do hereby declare the following to be a 'full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is'a front elevation of a window with part of the sill broken away to show the application of my improvet screen.
Fignre 21is a detatched sectional viewof the baseof the window,,sbowing the spring and the screenrollerin section.
.Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
My invention has for its object to provide a windowscreen which shall be raised and lowered by the sash, whereby dust, insects, &c., are excluded from dwellings, railway cars, vessels, 850., in the most effectual manher; and to this end,
The invention consists in a screen of gauze having its upper edge secured to the bottom rail of the lower sash, and its lower end attached to a spring roller screen when the window-sash is raised, and to roll the same upon the roller when the window is lowered.
The screen passes directly through a slot in the 'window-sill made for the purpose,'so that, when the sash is lowered, it shall rest upon the sill covering the slot, the screen being contained in the base beneath the casing. To facilitate the attachment of the roller andscreen to the window-casing the base is made in the form of a box, and its front G is adapted for removal by means of thumb-screws H, as shown, or other convenient devices.
If desired, the coiled springs maybe dispensed with and spiral springs employed'for the same purpose, but arranged longitudinally within the easement.
If desired, also, a screen may be applied to the up per sash with its roller in the top of the window-cas ing. In this case the tension of the roller-springs will balance the weight of the sash when the latter is lowered.
Having thus described my invention,
What-l claim as new is- In combination with the window-sash, the screen D passing through the slotted top or sill of the casing, and the spring roller E arranged in the box above or below the casing, snbstantiallv'as described, for the purpose specified. V The above specification of my invention signed by me this 4th day of September, 1870.
Witnesses: BENJAMIN GIROUX G. H. Fnos'r, E. A. Ennswoncrn.
