Specification of Letters Patent.

T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELLIS LOWREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bernice, in the parish of Union and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to metallic ties for railway rails.
The principal object of the invention is to construct a tie which shall include two simi lar members each of which having integral rail engaging lips or members, the said members, before being connected, are arranged side by side and one moved longitudinally of the other, whereby the rails may be arranged upon one of the said sections, after which the second mentioned member will be moved to bring its lips into engagement with the rail, means being provided for centrally securing the said members, whereby the ends or the rail receiving portions of the tie may be susceptible to a certain amount of movement in a vertical direction, and also whereby the ends of the ties are afforded a suflicient resiliency to properly support the rails without the employment of cushions or similar devices.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a tie of this class whereby two rails may have their ends connected without the employment of securing means other than those inte rally formed with the tie.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim,
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the tie. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one end of the tie. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one end of the rail showing one of the members attached thereto.
In the drawings I have illustrated one form of the device. In these figures, the sections 7 and 8 are provided with rail-engaging lips 9 and 10 which are formed upon the extension upon the upper plate of the section. The members or enlargements 11 and 12 upon the ends ofwhich the said lips 9 and 10 are formed, extend laterally from the inner side of the section upon which they are formed a distance equal to the width of the coacting section thus providing the members 11 and 12 with horizontally straight walls or shoulders 13 and 14 respectively which overlap or lie against the upper faces of the companion sections. The enlarged portions 12 provide a means for limiting the sliding movement of the sectron in an outward direction when the rails are assembled upon the sections, and retain the said sections in registrable contact. Both sections are formed with centrally arranged laterally extending openings which register when the sections are brought together so as to receive a securing element 7 adapted to be tightened by a nut 8. The shoulders 13 and 14k materially strengthen the rail engaging lips as well as retaining the sections in proper engagement with each other. The lips 9 and. 10 are provided adj acent their respective corners with longitudinally extending lugs 15 and 16 respectively which are adapted to pass through the bolt openings in the web at the meeting ends of the rails B and R thus providing a joint for the rails without the employment of fish plates or other analogous devices.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device as well as the advantages thereof will be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In combination with a pair of rail ends, each of which has an opening, of a railway tie therefor comprising two similar metallic members adapted to be arranged side by side, the opposite ends of each of the members having enlargements upon their bearing faces, the inner wall of which being beveled to provide rail engaging lips, each of said enlargements having one of its corners formed with a longitudinally extending lug for entering the opening in one rail end, and each of said enlargements extending beyond the inner face of the member to overlie and engage with the bearing face of the coacting member, each of the said members having second enlargements the outer faces of which being beveled to provide rail engaging lips which are disposed adjacent the lips upon the respective ends of the tie,
