FREELY-PORTABLE BREATHING- APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 15. 15;
Application filed November 13, 1914. Serial No. 871,960.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND LUDWIG CLAREN, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Liibeckfln the German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Freely-Portable Breathing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
In freely portable breathing apparatus with air regeneration three devices must be present, which are indispensable for the operation of, the apparatus. These devices consist firstly of a nourishing gas receptacle, in which air or oxygen is stored up 1n a highly compressed state, secondly an absorption cartridge which binds the carbonic acid of the exhaled air and thirdly of a breathing bag for taking up the exhaled air and allows of the to and fro flow of the air on account of its pliability in spite of the seclusion against the outer air. In the breathing ap paratus known heretofore these three devices were attached to a carrier frame and were provided with a comparatively large number of auxiliary mechanisms, such as hose, pipes and other connecting-parts, resulting in a rather complicated apparatus, which proved to be too awkward or cumbrous particularly, when used as a self-rescue apparatus. This very complicated combination of apparatusses is replaced according to the present invention by one single plural way piece, which is connected with the devices for upholding the respiration in such manner, that the hollow passages of the plural piece are in communication with the single devices. By the aid of this plural way piece it is possible to connect the different parts to a workable apparatus without the necessity of a special stifl'ening frame as used heretofore.
By doing away with the usually employed hose and other parts not. only a considerable reduction in the weight is the result, but also the operating of the apparatus is facilitated to a great extent and by doing away with parts that can easily be damaged a far greater durability of theapparatus is secured. All these advantages are of particularly great importance when the apparatus Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, D. G.
because such apparatus have a very smallweight and are very compact, they are easy to be handled and nevertheless must be constructed very strong, while moreover such apparatus should belong to the usual outfit or equipment of every miner when descending into the mine, and therefore the costs of manufacturing the apparatus must be held as low as possible.
Figure l is an elevation of the new breathing apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a modified construction of the same. Fig. 3 illustrates the plural way piece used in connection with this apparatus.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the air regenerating-or absorption-cartridge a, the breathing bag I) and the cylindrical receptacle c for the nourishing gas are connected to the three way piece (I in such manner, that this may serve as central piece for the complete apparatus.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the absorption cartridge a for the carbonic acid is arranged between the three way piece 03 and the breathing bag 6. To the upper shank of the three way piece the breathing hose is connected directly.
I'claim': 1. A portable breathing apparatus comprising the following members, a breathing tube, an air regenerator, a breathing bag, a' gas receptacle, and a three-way rigid cou- FERDINAND LUDWIG CLAREN.
