finenessv To all 'wiimrt' it may concern Be it known that l, Sxnronn B. Genrmean, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jederson and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Handle for SuitBoxes and nalogous Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
. The invention relates to improvements in handles for suit boxes'and analogous receptacles.- J
The'object of the present invention is rpimprove the construction of handles for suit boxes and analogous receptacles and to provide a simple, practical, and inexpensive handle designed to be applied to boxes for holding suits, underwear, and similar articles, and adapted to reinforce a box and to be constructed of sufficient strength to enable a box "to be completely filled with such articles and" safely carried without liability of the handle breaking under such strains. I
A further object of the invention is to. provide a'reinforcedhandle ofthis charac ter adapted to afford increased strength at size and minor details of construction, Withp in the scope of the claims, may be resorted, to without departing from the spiritorsacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure l is'a vside elevation of a suit box provided with handles constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 isa transverse sectional view through the handles and the upper portion of the box. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional perspective view of aportion of the box showing one of the handles thereof. Fig. 5 is 9. 01am view of the blank from which the handle is formed.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing. v
Specification of Letters Patent,

In the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, .t--1 designate similar handles secured to'a suit box 2 at opposite sides of the upper portion thereof. The suit box 2,'which may be constructed in any desired manner, is composed of two interfitting or telescoping sides or members 3, provided at the top portions with slits 4: cut in' the sides or members of the box at the' angles thereof, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Each handle consists of a blank 5 of stoutv paste board, preferably of the same material of which the box is constructed, having laterally extended substantially oblong terminal portions 6 and folded transversely at the center on the line a: to
7 form a reinforced handle of two plies or thicknesses. The intermediate portions 7 of the blank, extending from the laterally enlarged terminal portions 6 of the bend, are
preferably tapered, as shown, but they may e of any at er desired configuration, andthey are provided with registerin hand receivingopenings 8 spaced from t e central line a and brought into register by the said folding of the blank. The intermediate portions 7 of the blank constitute the outer ex-' teriorly arranged portion of the handle, and they are designedto be secured flat against each other by adhesive material or by stitching, riveting, stapling, or any other suitable means.
. The handle is applied to the box from the I interior thereof, the folded intermediate portions being passed outwardly through the slit irto arrange them exteriorly ofthe box, and the laterally enlarged terminal portions 6 are then spread and bent upwardly and downwardly respectively on the lines b?), and are secured by adhesive material or any other suitable. means to the lower or inner face of the top wall 9 and the inner face of the side wall-1O of the side or member of the box. The laterally projecting terminal ortions 6 extend beyond the ends of the s it 4 and form shoulders which engage the side or member of-the box in the angle thereof, and the'fastening of the enlarged terminal portions of the blank to the interior of the box reinforces the latter and increases the strength of the same.
The exteriorly arranged portions of the 0pposite handles are inclined and extend upwardly and inwardly, and the top or grip versely at a point midway its ends to form stilfen the box.
What isclaimed is 1. A handle for boxes and analogousre ceptaeles consisting of a blank formed of a single piece of flexible material folded transtwo lies, each ply being duplicate and provided with a substantially oblong terminal portion and an intermediate portion Which is reduced in width and is provided with an opening, said plies having the intermediate portions secured flat against each other with the said openings in register, the
two terminal ortions being left free, whereby they may e spread apart and arranged at right angles to each other for attachment to the box or other receptacle.
2. In combination with a box provided with spaced slits, a pair of handles, each consisting of a single piece of flexible material folded transversely at a point midway its ends to form two plies, each ply being provided with a substantially oblong terminal ortion which is reduced in width thereby orming a shoulder at each end of the terminal portion, said plies having the intermediate portions provided with openings and secured flat against each other with the said 0 enings in register to form a hand hold, an the two terminal portions left free, the said handles being passed through the slits in the box until the shoulders at the ends of the terminal portions are reached, whereupon said terminal portions are spre'ad apart and secured to the box at o posite sides of the slits, the outer portions of the handles wherethe material is folded being creased'to permit one handle to rest flat against the other handle when the two handles are brought toward each other.
Intestimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature. in the presence of two witnesses.
