CAN slrtrnR-Tor.
Specification of Letters 'atent.
Application flied July 29.1914. se'riaino. 853,868.
To a?? vwhom it may concern Be it known thatV I, JOHN T. 'LAGois, a subject of the King of Gi'eatBritain, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kingsand State of New York, Vhave invented af new and Improved ACan Sitter-Top, of which the following is a full, clear, and vexact description.
This invention relates to canvsifter tops and has to deal more particularly with the valve for opening and closing the apertures in the can top through which the-'contents of the can is sited.
The invention has foivits general objects to improve and simplify the construction of can sitter tops so as to be* reliable and eficient in use, comparatively simple and inexpensive to iiianufactliie and so' designed that there .will be no lossor waste of the contents ot' the can in shipment or handling in .the trade.
A further object of the invention is the provision ot' a simple, novel andl effective valve which jis prevented from accidentally opening during commercial handling or shipment ofthe can, but which can be easily` and quickly opened or closed by the user;
With Asuch objects in view, vand others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various vnovel features of construction and arrangement of Y parts which will bey set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing which-illus trates one embodiment of the invention, and wherein similar characters of reference indlcate corresponding parts in al1 .the views,
f valve in closed position; view showing the valve Figui-e1 is a perspective view of the upper portion -ofa sifter can; Fig. 2' is a vertical section on the line 2-1-2, Fig. 1, showing the Fig. 8 is a similar open; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the valve removed; and Fig. 5 isa transverse vertical section on the line5-5, Fig. l.
Referring to the. drawing, A designates an ordinarycan body tothe brim `1 of which The' valve B is in the formof a plate 5 which 'slides/*fin contact with the under side of the is slipped on 'a cover 2 which is of usual form and has-sifting openings orA apertures at one endY and an aperture 4 in the sijde wall.
cover, as shown in Fig. 2, this plate having .a stein or'shank 6 which extends out of the .opening l inthe cover and terminates in a be sit'ted out.
`merely illustrative and that such grip T. The plate extend downwardly at right-angles to the plane of the plate 5 tween the'brim l and the side flanges 9 of the cover 2, so that the plate 5 is slidably Supported by the bod)v of the can; The plate 5 also has an end liange 10 which is disposed within the body of the can, and consequeiitl y the llanges Sand l0 are separated by recesses ll at the corners of the plate 5. The flange l0 tears against the inner surface of the brim l ot' the can body so as to Patented J une 22, 1915.
5 has side flanges S which and are disposed beassist in sealing the can and preventing the contents from passing out betweenthe valve' and cover and through the openings 3 in case the` canis inverted or upset.
in Fig. l, the label C isapplied tol the can As shown body and also to the cover so that the cover cannot be detached, and this label covers the grip 7, which is shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, sotliat in order is torn at the grip 7, so that the latter can be engaged and bent upwardly if desired,
or enablingit to be more firmly taken between the linger and thumb for the purpose ot' pulling the valve out to open position, as
to usel the canthe label so that the contents can connection with t e accompanying drawing,
'the advantages of thel construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the inventionappe'rtains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which lI now consider tobe lthe -best embodiment thereof, I desire to have itA understood `that the device shown is vchanges may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus describedv my invention, AI
claim as new and desire'to secure byuLettersPatent:
1. The combination of a body, a cover having a peripheral flange embracing the body and provided within its margins with 'sitting -apertures,.a plate-like valve dis'-' posed within the cover and having lateral anges which extend duts'ide of the body and lie between the sides of the body and the anges of the cover, whereby the valve is siidable between the under side of the cover and the top edges of the body at opposite sides, and means connected with the valve 'for operating the same.
2. The combination of a body, :t can cover having sifting apertures providedl with a 1Q geripheral Hang@ embracing the brim of the f i ody, a valve within the cover, said valve consisting of a Het plate having side anges enga-gingthe outside of the brim ofthe body and the inside of the marginal iange of the cover, and a shank connected with the plate and extending out of the cover to form a grip for operating the valve.
In testimony whereof I have signed my neme to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN T. LAGOTS.
