Be it known that I, WILLTAM BLAoKMoRn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a couplcr embodying my invention and showing the parts in locked position; Fig. 2 `is a section on lines H-II of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section showing the parts in lockset position; Fig. 4 is a section ou lines 1V-IV of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section showing the parts in yknuckle-thrown position; Fig. 6 is a section on lines VI-VI ot Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a longitudinal vertical section on lines VII-VII of Fig. 2, showing the parts in locked position; Fig. 8 is a longitudinal vertical section on lines VIH- .Vlll of Fig. 6, showing the parts in knuckle-thrown position; Fig. 9 isa section showing interlocked couplers during buffing, and Fig. 10 is a detail of the lock.
My invention relates to car couplers of the Master Car Builders type; is designed to provide a coupler in which the stresses of buiiing and draft shall be transmitted directly through the coupler-knuckle to the coupler-head, and which is of greater strength and durabilitythan those noW i service on railroads.
Myimprovements are effected by changes in the form and construction' of the couplerhead, the knuckle, the locking and knuckle- `throwing members, and in the inter-action and engagement therebetween. I
Referring to the drawings, 2 is the coupler-head, 3 the knuckle, 4 the lock and 5 the opener.
The numeral 6 is the knuckle-pin, o'f sufficiently less diameter than the knuckle-pin hole to give a clearance space m which prevents stress thereon during buflirig or draft.
The cavity in the coupler-head 2 is provided with a transverse bearing Wall 7 for the pulling lug 8 of the knuckle 3, and clearance spaces y, .e and w are also provided between the side face 9, the back wall 10 and the shoulder 32 of the knuckle and the walls 11, 12 and 33 respectively of the coupler-head.
The lock 4 has a head or enlarged portion having a longitudinal dat face 13, which coacts wlth the front face 14 of the knuckletail when 1n locking position, and onf its side opposite a corresponding 'dat face 15 for en` gagement with the wall 16 of the couplerheac'l. The lock has also a depending leg 17, having anunder-cut lock-setting surface 18 and a toe 19 adapted to coperate With the` Upon one side of the,

head of the lock and above its locking face which is rotatably seated in the socket 25 of the coupler-head, has two arms 26 and 27. The arm 26 operates in the slot 28 on the under side ot the knuckle-tail, and the arm` 27 eoperates with the leg 17 of' the, lock. The locking lug 29 on the bottom of the opener 5 permits its removal fromth'e coupler-head only when the knuckle has been removed, since the opener must be rotated so that it will register wiiththe 'slot 30 aty the side of the socket 25 and can then be lifted out. The slot 28 is located alongthe neutral axis of the knuckle tail, since the removal of metal from the tail along this line will least affect its strength.
The operation of my device is as follows: When it is desired to bring the lock 4 into lock-set position, the lock is lifted bythe lifting link 21, and as soon as the body of. thelock clears the knuckle-tail 3, its leg 17.
will swingto the left, because the lifting eye 20 is ofi' center, and the'under-cut surface 18 will lodge on top ofthe arm 27 of the opener 5, and the lock will then be in lock-set position and the cars may then be' drawn apart without further operationof the coupler. When it is desired' to throw the coupler into open position the llock 4 is lifted by the lifting link 21 until the projection 22 on the lock strikes the shoulder* 23 in the upper wall of the coupler-cavity, which acts as a fulcrum bearing and causes the toe 19 of the lock to be thrown trans` versely of the coupler-cavity against the arm 27 of the opener 5, so that the opener 5 will rotate about its trunnion 24 in its socket 25, and its arm 26 will throw the knuckle open. shown `in Figs. 1, 2 and 7, and under draft, the knuckle 3 is pulled forwardly by reason ot the clearance spaces x and y and is held. tight on the bearing -tace ot its pulling lug 5 8 and the front bearing tace 1'1 of .its tail, between the bearing wall 7 of the couplerhead and tie locking -tace 13 et the lock,

The pulling lug of the knuckle tail is preferably so constructed that its pulling face is at right angles to the longitudinal axis ot the ceipler, and its shearing strength across the section ot' maximum shearing stresswith reference to the strains to which it is subjected is relatively at least as great as the strength el" the metal in tension through the hub ot' the knuckle.`
The present application is a division of my copending` application, Serial No. 729,943, filed November 7, 1912. f
,lVhat I claim is:
1. In a oar coupler, a lock having a connection tor a lifting link on its head on the side toward the longitudinal` center line of the coupler, a projection on the opposite side ot the head of the lock, a shoulder in the upper part et the coupler-cavity with which said projection is designed to cooperate, a leg depending from the lock, a two-armed knuckle-opener pivotally mounted in the bottom ot the coupler-head, the said leg which bears against the Wall 1'15 et the being adapted to swing' transversely of the coupler-cavity and in a direction toward the rear side of the knuckle-tail, to coperate ivith an arm of the opener tor lock-setting and lmuckle-throiving.
2. .In a car coupler, a knuckle-opener pivotally mounted in the bottom of the coupler-head and having two arms, one heilig adapted to be actuated by the lock and the other having a lug thereon, adapted to operate in a recess `in the under tace ot' the knuckle-tail, the said recess beine located along the line et the neutral axis of the knuckle-tail.
In a car coupler, a vertically-movable lock having a depending leg adapted to swing transversely across the coupler cavity, and a two-armed knuckle-opener having a pivotal bearingr on the bottom of the coupler headv` the said leg being adapted to seat upon said opener tor lock-setting and to actuate it tor kmleide-throwing.
