Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1915..
Application filed March-24, 1914. Serial N 0. 827,242.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. R. AN- DREWS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Leominster, in the county of Worcester, and State of Mas sachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chairs and par ticularly to reclining chairs commonly known as Morris chairs, the object of the present invention being to provide a chair of this class that may be folded .so as to occupy less space while being shipped to the merchant, while in storage either in the factory or the place of business of the wholesaler or retailer, and also when not in use in the home.
The invention consists primarilyin pro viding a divided seat portion the two parts of which are hinged together while its opposite edges are hinged to the side members of the chair, said seat portion having hinged to its rear edges two separate back. members, normally retained at an angle to said seat by means interposed between said side members, said side members being provided with recesses on their inner faces to receive the back members when folded over on said seat portion and when said portion has been folded to permit the said side members to be moved toward each other.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrange ment of parts which will be fully under- 'stood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of a chair embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section, the cutting plane being on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a front elevation of said chair. Fig. 4: represents a transverse section of the chair folded. Fig. 5 represents an enlarged detail showing the locking device for the back members, and Fig. 6 represents a section of the same, the cutting plane being on line 6-6 on imilar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawlngs.
In the drawings, 10-10 are two side members supported by the front and rear legs 11 and 12. Extending upwardly from each of the side members 10 is a plurality of uprights 13 having superimposed thereon the rail 14. To the upper face of each rail 14 is secured a metal plate 15 having forwardly extending curved projections 16. Interposed between said side members 10 and hinged thereto at opposite edges as at is a centrally divided seat 18, the two parts ofwhich are hinged together as at 19. Thisseat 18 is so hinged or articulated to the side members 10 as to permit it being folded'upwardly into the position shown in Fig. e of the drawings, so that the side members 10 may be moved toward each other so as to occupy less space when not in use. To the rear edge of each part of the seat 18 is hinged as indicated at 20 the lower edge of-a back member 21', these two members being entirely separate. The adjacent edges of the members 21 are provided with slots 22 in which is adapted to be inserted the removable locking member 23 by which the said members 21 are locked together when the chair is in use. When in use the side members 10 are separated as indicated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive and the back members 21 are positioned at an angle to said seat portion 18 and retained in such adjusted position by means of a rod 24 extend ing from one side frame to the other. Each rod 24 is provided with flanges 25 forming an annular groove 26 adapted to receive the projections 16, thereby retaining the side frames separated in an obvious manner. It is self-evident that the back members 21 may be adjusted to different inclinations by the rod 24 being engaged with different opposed projections 16 formed upon the rails 15.
interposed between the legs 12 is hinged a two-part brace 27 which assists in retaining the side frames separated when the chair is in use. When it is desired to store the chair the brace 27 is moved into position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the rods 24 and locking device 23 are removed to permit the back members 21 being folded When these memin recesses 28 in the inner faces of the side members 10. It is obvious that, owing to the back members 21 being hinged to the rear edges of the seat 18 when these members 21 are at an angle to the seat 18 and locked erably cushions are used upon' the seat '18 and the back members 21, but as these cushthe invention they are ions form no-part of notshown in the drawings;
