rasrnlvnn roa nnnwnns, 8w.
Application filed. November 11, 1912, Serial No. 730,642. Renewed April To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. TELFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewisburg, Greenbrier county, and State of West Virginia, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Drawers, &c., of which the following is a specification- My improvement relates to fasteners for drawers, and has for its object the supplying of a simple, cheap and effective means for automatically securing a drawer or tray of any size or type. 7
A further object is to supply an automatic securing means for any type of sliding access means such as windows, doors, pigeon holes, etc.
With these and other objects in mind, I will probably manufacture the device so that it may be sold as an article of commercial hardware, in which form it could be sold and be installed by joiners or cabinet makers on any type of article requiring such a device. I It is obvious that it would be applicable to either the bottom or side of a drawer or tray and might be concealed in a mannerto cause the releasing means to be invisible, thus producing a secret opening and locking means. In the drawing I have simply shown the broad idea of my principle as it might appear attached to an ordinary small drawer of a desk.
In the drawing, Figure l isv a sectional plan view of a small desk drawer as it would appear fitted with my improvement. Figs.
2, 3, and 4: are details of the spring opener,
detent, and releasing means respectively, in the order mentione Referring morespecifically to the drawings, 1 represents the standing or stationary part. of a desk, 2 a small drawer slidably mounted therein, 3, 4t and 5 (Fig. 1) being the detent or look, releasing means, and the spring drawer opener in the order mentioned. These latter mentioned features are shown in their respective relation to each other mounted upon the drawer and desk.
The detent or look consists of a plate 6 adapted to be secured to the side of the.
drawer 2, the said plate having secured thereto a flat spring 7 upon which ismounted at-its outer or free end a wedge shaped detent 8. It is simply necessary when Specification of Letters Patent.

mounting the detent or look to gouge out enough material from the drawer to insert the plate 6 flush with the side thereof and provide a recess 9 therein to allow the wedge shaped detent 8 to be forced in.
The releasing means consists of a plate 10 similar to the plate 6 of the detent portion, the said plate being adapted to be secured to r the standing part of the desk as shown, and
having secured thereto a flat spring 11 upon which is mounted at its outer or free end a push button or plunger 12 extending through an opening 13 in the side of the standing or stationary part of the desk, all substantially as shown. The releasing means is so disposed with respect to the detent or look that the push button or plunger may engage the wedge shaped detent 8 at a point inclined to effect a release of the parts when the plunger is actuated. The spring opener may consist of a flat spring 14 of any desired strength mounted at one end in a plate 15, the free end of the spring extending nor mally outwardly from the back of the standing part of the desk in which the opener is mounted in a manner tending to force the drawer open when the detent has been released by the releasing means.
It is obvious that I may fit any number of the spring openers in a drawer or may use spiral springs instead of flat ones as shown. The manufacture of this article will be extremely simple and cheap, as the plates 6, 10 and 15 can be stamped from sheet metal by the same blanking die, it simply remaining necessary to secure the several other simple features to the same and the set consisting of the three partsdetent, releasing means, and spring openerwould be ready for the market.
I claim:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a sliding member and a of a longitudinally slotted plate secured to the sliding member, a spring carrying a wedge-shaped detent at its free end and having its other end secured to the said slotted plate, the normal position of the said spring and detent serving to lock the sliding member; and a releasing means for the detent secured to the stationary portion comprising a longitudinally slotted plate and a spring carried thereby provided with a push memberv seln'testimonyjwhereofl my signature, 7'
