citizen of the United States, residing in the An object of the invention is to combinewith the paper platen a positive and accurate clutch for holding the platen in any'desired adjustment with respect to the paper feed-' ing or platen rotating devices, so that when the platen has been adjusted to hold and feed the paper as desired it will be impossible for the platen to move, with respect to the paper feeding device as sometimes occurs on machines at present in use, resulting in improper alinement of the records on the paper.
The broad object of the invention is to provide an improved clutch device operable to turn the platen to position any selected part of the paper at the recording line and adjustable in connection with the paper feeding device to prevent displacement of the paper.
- Another objectis to provide a clutch device in connection with the platen, and a platen rotating knob operable to rotate the platen, and automatic means for engaging the clutch device to hold the platen from accidental rotation.

The platen 1 is mounted in a carriage 2 and is supported upon a shaft 3 which is j ournaledin hearings in the side frames of the carriage.
A lmob 4 (Fig. 6) is attached to one end of the shaft 3 for adjustment and manipulation of the platen and carriage. The clutch and line space wheel are mounted upon the opposite end of the shaft.
The line space wheel 5 isloosely mounted it uponthe platen shaft 3 and isengaged by a detent 6 supported by a lever 7 which is. pivoted to thevside of the carriage. The lever 7 is in the form of a bell crank and is actuated by a spring 8, one end of which is connected to a depending arm of the lever and the other endof 'whichis connected to the side of the carriage effectively to actuate the detent 6 in engagement with the wheel 5. Thus the wheel will. be retained in its different line space adjustments which conform to the distances between the teeth on the periphery of said wheel.
As above stated, the Wheel. 5 is loosely mounted on the shaft 3. Said wheel is provided with .a number of studs 9,. (Figs. *2 and 3) which extend through holes in one of the clutch members 10 and thereby interlock said wheel andsaid clutch member, so
that the clutch member will be driven with the wheel.
A coil spring 11 encircles the shaft 3 between the clutch member 10 and the wheel 5 thereby actuating said clutch member away from said Wheel effectively to engage said clutch member with the cooperating clutch member, as hereinafter described. The
clutch member 10 is provided with an out-- wardly extending annular flange having a number of teeth 12 thereon.
The other clutch member 13 is attached to a support 14 which is attached to the shaft 3 by a pin 15. The clutch member 13 is provided with an inwardly extending annular flange of the same diameter as the annular flange of the clutch member 10. The entire edge of the flange on the clutch member 13 is provided with a series of teeth16 adapted to be engaged by the teeth 12 to lock or close the clutch. The teeth on one of the clutch members are slightly larger than the teeth on the other clutch member; that is, assuming that there are 49 teeth of equal size and equally spaced on the clutch member 10, there may be 50 teeth of uniform size and uniformly spaced on the clutch member 13. Thus, it will be seen that all of the teeth on the clutch members cannot be simultaneously engaged, because the size and spacing of the teeth on one clutch member varies with respect to the size and spacing of the teeth on the cotiperating clutch member, as will be understood by reference to the-diagrammatic illustration in Fig. 5, and to the illustration of the clutch members in engagement with each other in Fig. 2. It will also be understood that very slight movement of one clutch member with respect to the other clutch member will be required in order to disengage any teeth which may be in engagement, and to engage other teethwith each other. In fact, by using a large number of teeth on the two clutch members only an imperceptible movement will be required, so that the paper can be adjusted almost to any precise line.- Since the clutch member 13 is rigid upon the shaft 3 the said shaft and the platen thereon will be rotated by operation of any line spacing mechanism acting upon the wheel 5.
A sleeve 17 is slidably mounted upon the outer portion of the shaft 3 and supports a cylindrical case 18 inclosing the clutch members and protecting them from dirt and dust.
A number of arms 19 are attached to the case 18 and extend through notches or spaces formed in the clutch member 13, beyond the inner ends of the teeth 16 but normally out of contact with the clutch member 10. Outward movement of the sleeve 17 is prevented by the head of a screw 20 the shank of which is within the end of the shaft 3.
A knob 21 is attached to the sleeve 17 and constitutes a handle whereby the sleeve 17 may be forced inwardly on the shaft 3 to the position shown in Fig. 3. Thus, by pressing inwardly the knob 21 and the other parts controlled thereby the ends of the arms 19 will be brought into contact with the outer surface of the clutch member 10 and will press said clutch member inwardly against the tension of the spring 11,. and disengage the teeth 12 from the teeth 16. The inward movement of the parts to open the clutch presses the edge of the case 18 against a beveled member, preferably a roller, on the lower arm of the bell crank 7, thereby firmly seating or locking the detent 6 in engagement with the line space wheel- 5 and preventing any movement of said line space wheel while the platen and paper are being adjusted by turning the knob 21. Because of the large number of teeth, and the slight differential existing between the number and spacing. thereof on the two clutch members the clutch members will engage in any of the adjustments to which the platen may be moved irrespective of the minute distance of such movement so long as such distance is, no less than the difierence in the diiferential compensator in the clutch.
I It will be understood that any suitable actuating device may be employed to act in connection with which I have illustrated my invention, there is a rock shaft 22 (Fig;
l) which is rocked forward and back in recordingv operations. When the device is used upon the Dalton adding machine the rock shaft 22 may be caused to actuate the line space mechanism consisting of aitrain of connections 23 arranged to operate a pawl 24 and cause said pawl to rotate the line space wheel and thereby the platen through the medium of the clutch mechanism above described. The writing line is represented by the lower edges of openings in the uprights 25 attached to the case of the machine.
' It will be obvious that the invention I may be emplloyed in various types of recording mac ines and that it is by no means restricted to use upon any particular type of machines. Neither do I restrict myself to specific forms of the device, but- What I claim and desire to secure by Let- I 2. In a recording machine, a platen ark ranged to hold paper, a shaft supporting said pla,ten,a line space wheel loosely mounted on said shaft, a clutch member movable with said line space wheel, an annular series of teeth on said clutchmember; a second clutch member, an annular series of teeth onv said second-named clutch member to engage with said first-named clutch member in'any one of various adjustmer ts, means for rotating the platen, means controlled by said rotating means for disengaging said clutch members, and a detent device controlled by the disengagement of said clutch-members to hold said line space wheel.
3. The combination with a platen arranged to hold paper, and a shaft holding said platen, of a line space wheel on said shaft, a detent device acting uponsaid line I space wheel, a differential clutch device adjustable to hold said platen in any one of various selected adjustments with respect to said line/space wheel, means for disengaging. said clutch device and rotating said platen independently of said line space wheel, and means o erated by said disengaging means to :hold said detent device positively in engagement with said. line 1 space wheel.

In a recording machine, the combination with a platen shaft, and a ratchet wheel loosely mounted on said shaft, of clutch devices for locking said ratchet wheel upon said shaft, manual means for rotating said shaft, and elements controlled by said manual means for positively holding said ratchet wheel stationary during rotation of said shaft.

In a recording machine, the combination with a platen shaft, and a ratchet wheel loosely mounted on said shaft, of clutch devices for locking said ratchet wheel upon said shaft, manualmeans for releasing said clutch device, and elements controlled by said manual means for positively holding said ratchet wheel from rotation.

In a recording machine, the combination with a platen shaft and a ratchet wheel loosely mounted on said shaft, of .clutch devices for locking said ratchet wheel upon tion with a platen shaft and a ratchet wheelloosely mounted on said shaft, of clutch devices for locking said ratchet wheel upon said shaft, a manually engageable device supported by said shaft and movable axially thereon, means controlled by said device for releasing said clutch devices, and means controlled by said. device for positively holding said ratchet wheel stationary.
