citizen of the United States, and a .nection with the nozzle ofJa' hose,
To all-whom it mag/concern: 1
Be it known that I, Hownrrr T. FORD, a resident of Central Valley, inthe county of Orange and State of. New -York, have invented: a
new and ImprovedWVashing Device for Au tomobiles and other Vehicles, ofwhi'ch the ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description:
which is especially adaptedto be used in conwhereby the sponge can be held directly in front of the nozzle so that the sponge will be kept constantly supplied with water during the' washing'operation, as in cleaning vehicle wheels, bodies and the like.
The invention has for its general objects to improve and simplify the construction of washing devicesas set forth in Letters Patent of the United States, Number 1,096,704, granted to me on the 12th day of May, 1914, whereby the sponge can be held more firmly in the holder, the holdermore easily fastened with respect to the hose nozzle in a position to hold the sponge in alinement with the nozzle, and whereby the device can be more conveniently handled.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel I features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which 7 illustrates one embodiment of the invention,
' indicate corresponding parts in 7 all theviews, Figure 1 is a plan and wherein similar characters of reference holder applied'to a nozzle; Fig. 2 is a verticalsection of the sponge holder with the nozzle in elevation; and Figs. 3' and 4; are sectional views onthe lines 3-3, and M, respectively, of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, A designates an ordinary hose nozzle, and B is the washing device applied to the nozzle in the form of an attachment which can be readily fastened thereon or taken off. The attachment comprises a clip 1 which embraces the nozzle and is secured in position by a clamping mu: 2 fastened to lugs 3 of the clip, and on this clip is a tangentially disposed bar-like portion 4 which has a longitudinal bore 5=for nown'rrr rownsnufn ro nnjlor onnTn LavALLnr, NEW ORK.

receiving a pivot bolt 6: which fastens the I I sponge-carrying frame B to the clip. This frame :comprises diverging bars or members 7 which-have eyes 8 through which the pivot bolt 6 extends, such eyes being spaced aparttoeng'age the opposite ends of the bar-- likemember a of the 'c1'ip.- The members 7 are connected togetherby a cross-bar :9 which l shape'form. Thisjclip surrounds the nozzle thereof and where the and the spring "clip is automatically engaged or disengaged, by
moving the sponge-carrying frame toward or from the nozzle pintle 6 as a center. "A
I carriesa springclip 10 of substantially U- This invention relates to a sponge holder point between the discharge orifice ina swinging movement ring 11. is carried by the-members 7 ,and in this ring is inserted the sponge 'C. The
sponge is fastened in'Zthe ring by "screwbolts 12that extend diametrically of the ring at different angles and through the sponge; v These, bolts effectively anchor the sponge in theholder andprevent the sponge from tearing out in the useof the device. The parts 7, 8, 9 and .11 are preferably a single-piece casting, and the clip 10, which is resilient, is fastened thereto by a rivet or equivalent means 13. The clamping clip 1,
which is also a metal casting, has formed therewith a hollow boss '14 that extends from the part 4, and in this boss is fastened a ham dle 15 of any desired length, whereby the operator can conveniently use the device.
When the device is in use,the sponge holder is in the full line position, Fig. 2, sothat the sponge is directly in line with "the nozzle 2, and'the stream from the nozzle'will keep the'sponge wet during the i the operator holds the device by the handle 15. When a' stream of 'wateris to be played on the parts to be washed the sponge holder is thrown upwardly and backwardlv .to the broken line position, Fig. 2, where it rests against the handle.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will 'be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the device "which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: V
1. A washing device of the class described comprising a spongeholding ring, a pair of members rigidly connected with the ring, a
cross-bar connected with the members, a-
spring nozzle-engaging clip carried by the cross-bar and means connected with the members for attaching the device to a hose nozzle. 7 1
2. A washing device of the class described comprising a sponge-holding ring, a pair of members rigidly connected with the ring, a
cross-bar connected with the members, a spring nozzle-engaging clip carried by the cross-bar, a nozzle-embracing clamping clip having a bar-like member disposed between the first-mentioned members, means for pivotally connecting the first-mentioned members with the said member of the clamping clip, and'a handle connected with the clamping clip; r
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
