A. J. DES CHAMPS.
WINDOW BEAD FASTENER- APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 28, 1908.

WITNESSES: IN VEN TOR.

WINDOW-IBEAD FASTENER.
intense.
Application filed September 28, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALrrIoNsn J. Dns CIIAMPS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved \Vindow-Bead .l astcner, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of devices employed in a window-frame for holding the two sashes separated each from the other, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified having novel features of advantage and utility.
One form of device embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the wall of a building and a part of a window-frame showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view on enlarged scale of the end of the parting check showing my improved holder in place thereon. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of my improved holder. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing another form of holder. Fig. 5 is a view showing still another form of holder.
in the ordinary construction of windowframes a groove is formed lengthwise of the side parts of the frame and in this groove a parting check 6 is placed usually without other fastening means than a reasonably tight fit within the groove, such fit, however, being of a character to allow the check to be forced from the groove when desired. The lower rail of the upper or outer sash and the upper rail of the lower or inner sash, either or both, are brought together to form a tight joint between the two sashes when they are closed, and the end or ends of these meeting rails of the upper and lower sashes are recessed to receive the parting check which is held in place midway of its length by said rails. This form of construction of the sashes is not shown herein, it being well known and understood by those skilled in the art.
In a common form of construction the ends of the parting check are held only by the frictional engagement within the groove as above described, with a result that such ends warp and soon become displaced from the groove. This is especially true of the lower end of the parting check, for the reason that it is exposed to the Weather, and

when it becomes displaced from the groove an opening is left within which dampness may collect, together with dust and dirt, thus allowing entrance of the moisture un derneath the stool of the window-frame to the interior of the building, where its presence is often noticeable under the windowframe by stains upon the plastering or wallpaper. This presence of the moisture and dirt also tends to rot the window-frame and thus shorten its life.
By my invention I have provided a device by means of which the parting check may be held securely in place in a manner to allow its removal at all desirable times, the device, while serving as a proper holding means also being of such character that it is practically invisible, is readily secured in positlon, and is comparatively inexpensive in construction. Such a device is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which the numeral 7 denotes the wall of a building in which a sill 8' of usual form and construction is located. A windowframe of usual form andconstruction including a stool 9 and a side-part 10 is located within the window frame opening, a portion of such frame only being shown herein sufficient for a thorough understanding of my invention. A strip 11 is secured to the side part of the frame between which strip and the parting check 6 the groove for the upper sash is located, the groove for the inner sash 12 being located between the parting check 6 and a strip on the side part of the frame within the latter, that is, on the opposite side of the check from the strip 11".
In carrying out my invention a holder 13 is suitably formed of metal or other desired material, this holder preferably being constructed to lie as to a portion at least between the end of the parting check 6 and the window stool 9 and may be secured to the latter in any desirable manner. In the preferred form of construction this holder is made of a piece of sheet metal bent to T- form and having a stem 14 and a base composed of wings 15 extending laterally from the stern and having means as openings 16 to receive fastening devices for securing them to the window stool or like part. It will be understood that in describing this fixture and its attachment to the window stool the description will apply equally in cases where the holder is applied to the head of the window-frame simply by substituting for the parts named terms designating corresponding parts at the top of the window.
Copies of this patentmay be obtained for A recess 17 is formed in the end of the parting check, this recess being conveniently made as by means of a saw-cut, the stem 14 being of a thickness suflicient to fit within saidcut.
It will be noticed that when the parting check is in place the holder is practically invisible,,being secured to the window stool immediately underneath the end of the parting check. The stem 14 is of such length that by springing the parting check outward at its center it may be easily disengaged from the holder.
Infthe form of the device shown in Fig. 4 the holder is composed of an angular piece, the stem 21 fitting within the recess at the end of the parting check and a foot or base 22 having holes 23 for the reception of nails or tacks, serving as a means for holding the check in place.
In Fig. 5 another form of holder is shown in which a plate 25 having an opening 24 for the reception of a nail or the like by means of which it may be secured to the window sill is provided. This'plate may be provided with spurs or prongs 26 formed in any desired manner to penetrate the end of the check to hold it in position.
While I have shown and described herein several forms of carrying out my idea, there are several other constructions embodying my invention by means of which the same results may be attained, and I do not therefore limit myself to the'means' herein shown r for attaining the desired'result, asthe colistructions may be varied to a greater or lesser extent without departing from the invention as embodied herein.
I claim 1. In combination in a window frame, a
holder having a base and a projection rising from its upper surface, said base having means to fasten the holder, and a parting strip having a recess removed from its front edge and positioned. to engage said projec-- tion. 7
2. In combinatlon 1n a window frame, a holder having a base and a lip rlsing from its upper surface, said base having means to fasten the holder, and a parting strip having a slot extending across it at a distance from its front edge and positioned to engage said lip.
