Description

- CHARLES L. CARTER.
Improvement in Key=Tags. No. 114,108. Patented April 25,1871.

Letters Patent No. 114,108, dated April 25, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN KEV-TAGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. CARTER, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Key-Tags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same sutiioient to enable others skilled in the class to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which makes part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved key-- tag, and H Figures? and 3 are detached views of parts of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in a key-tag constructed of twoangular pieces of metal or other suitable material, arrangedat right angles to each other, and provided with a ring by which to attach it to the key.
In the drawing 1 have shown a tag consisting of two triangular pieces, a b, which are each, at its base, provided with a slot, 0. These pieces are placed at right angles to each other, the slots 0 passing into and over each other, and the pieces ct b arethen soldered or otherwise suitably connected 'to each other, so as to remain firmly in position, as shown in fig. 1
One of the pieces is provided with an opening, (Z, through which a ring, a, carrying the key f, is passed. Either one or both of these pieces may be provided with numbers or other suitable signs indicating the rooms or drawers to which the key may belong.
This improved key-tag is especially applicable to hotels, where guests are in the habit of carrying their room-keys in'their pockets and forget to return them to the ofiice on leaving.
Square and circular fiat pieces of metal with serrated edges have heretofore been used, but without attaining the desired object, for the flatness of the pieces enabled them to be placed in a side pocket, and, although the serrated edges would tear the pocket, the carrying oif of the key would not be discovered until the guest had left. But by attaching my improvement it will be impossible to put the ,key and tag into the pocket; and were a guest to succeed in doing this the pressure of the sharp edges against the body would quickly remind him of its presence. It is of course immaterial what exact shape the pieces a b have as long as they are provided with angles or serrated edges and arranged at right angles to each other;
Having thus described my invention, XVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A key-tag, constructed of two or more angular or serrated pieces, a b, arranged at an angle toward each other, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
