To all whom it may concern Be it known that. I, WALTER SPARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac- 7 suitable manner.

My invention relates to improvements in binders and more particularly has reference to binders or holders for the leaves of a book more commonly referred to as a loose leaf binder.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view partly broken away illustrating an application of my invention in the form of a blank book or ledger. Fig.4 a perspective view of portions of the inner parts of the binder showing the same in their interlocked position, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of binding screws and a sleeve device for retaining the combination in position.

. It should of course be understood that the sheets to be bound are provided with holes adjacent to the rear edges of the same as is usual with the sheets or leaves of loose leaf books. These holes are of a size sufficient to receive sleeves or tubes such as 6 shown in Figs. 5 and 2, said sleeves being internally threaded to receive screws such as 7 and 8.

9 and 10 are the two interlocking members of the inner portions of the binder and are provided at opposite extremities with channels or grooves as indicated by the reference characters 11-11 which serve to guide and maintain the inner sections in alinement. The outer shell of the binder shown to better advantage in Fig. 3 is provided along its longitudinal edges with curled-in portions or lips 12-12 as shown to serve as a bearing for the rods 13-13. These rods before being bound within the lips of the shell are provided with flaps or cover supports'lt- 1 1 to which the cover of the book may be suitably secured'by pasting or in any other Upon the lower interior portion of the shell is also provided a suitable channel indicated by reference character 15, said channel being provided with cut away portions indicated by reference characters 16-16.

When the sheetsare properly assembled or stacked the sleeves 6 are inserted through the binding holes. of said sheets and. the lower screw 8 is then introduced into the lower end of the sleeve as, shown in Fig. 5,

at the same time passing through the lower of the interior binding plates 10. After this the upper binding plate 9 is fitted in position and the combination is introduced between the jaws of the outer clamp which are preferably resilient. The sleeves 6 may then be screwed down with the fingers so as to insure a tight seating of the same upon the channel 15. f It now remains to pass thescrews 7 through the top of the outer jaws or binding member as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, screwing the same downwardly into the sleeves 6. For this purpose it has been found preferable to provide a zig zag cut in the heads of the screws 7 to receive a suitable key by which the screws 7 may be driven home. This will prevent the screws being easily unloosened by knives, screw drivers, or other flat bladed devices.

The outer ends of the shell ofthe binder it will be observed are provided with turned-in portions 18-18 which give an additional finished appearance to the binder.

The laterally projecting lugs or ears such as 19-19 of the interiorplate clamps it will be observed fit into and engage the curved .back of the outer binder as shown to better advantage inFig. 2.

After various parts have been assembled rious modifications may be made in the general arrangements or structure of the parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

I claim:

. 1. A binder for sheets comprising an outer shell adapted to embrace the margins at one side of said sheets, a bayonet look upon one side of said shell, binding means adapted to be secured Within said bayonet lock and having means adapted to engage the other side of said shell and to pass through and retain said sheets Within said shell.

2. A binder for sheets comprising an outer shell adapted to embrace the margins at one side of said sheets, a bayonet look upon one side of said shell, binding means adapted to be secured Within said bayonet lock and having means adapted to engage the other side of said shell and to pass through and retain said sheets Within said shell, and means at the edges of said shell adapted to provide supports for the covers of a book.

3. A binder for sheets comprising an outer shell adapted to embrace the margins at one side of said sheets, a bayonet lock upon one side of said shell, binding means adapted to be secured Within said bayonet lock and having means adapted to engage the other side 'in presence of tWo 1 gnomeof said shell and to pass through and retain said sheets Within said shell, and means at the edges of said shell adapted to provide supports for the covers of a book, engaging plates adapted to engage the edges of said sheets and adapted to be bound thereupon. by said binding means.

4. A binder for sheets comprising an outer shell adapted to embrace the margins at one side of said sheets, a bayonet lock upon one side of said shell, binding means adapted to be secured Within said bayonet lock and having means adapted to engage the other side of said shell and to pass through and retain said sheets Within said shell, and means at the edges of said shell adapted to provide supports for the covers of a book, engaging plates adapted to engage the edges of said sheets and adapted to be bound thereupon by said binding means, said engaging plates having laterally projecting portions adapted to conform to and fit into the interior of said shell.
