Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful' Improvements in Condiment-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for containing condiments, each of which can be independently sifted or removed frorn the container.
My device is particularly adapted for use in connection with salt and epper and arranged so that when the hol er is not in use the container will be closed to prevent the condiments therein from becoming saturated with moisture, the mentioned condiments being independently7 removable from the container, means belng provided for preventing one of the condiments from issumg yfromthe container when the other condiment issues therefrom.

Referring to the figures and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, I provide a frusto-conically shaped container 10 having the outer side at the upper and lower ends thereof threaded to receive a cap 11 and a base 12. Grooves 13 are formed on the inn er side of the container 10 and a partition 14, consisting of a plate having the sides thereof inclined to the samel angle as the container, is mounted within the container 10, the inclined edges of the late being received inthe grooves 13 to ivide the 1nterior of the container into compartments 15, L1158", it being readily lunderstood that the artition 14 is inserted in om the bottom thereof.
The cap `11 comprises a perforated plate 16, enclrcled by aI ring 17, provided Awith iianges 1 8, 18u and the under side of the plate 16 1s provided with spaced diametrically extendingdepending guide lugs y19, the upper end of the partltion '14 being received in the space between the guide lugs 19, when the partition is inserted in the container, after which the base 12 is -threadedly engaged with the container, thus retaining the upper end of the partition 14 in engagement with the lugs 19 and preventing the condiment in the compartment 15 from mixing with the condiment in the com artment 15St and vice versa, the inner side o the base 12, after the base has been engaged with the the container 10 container 10, being adapted to abut against the lower end of the partition 14, thus retaining the partition in rigid position within the container 10.
One-half of the circular iiange 18 of the ring 17 is provided with a groove 20 in which is slidably received a semi-circular -upwardly extending flange 21, formed on a perforated slide 22, a handle 23 being formed on the slide 22 and projecting upwardly and over the ring 17 so that by grasping the handle 23 and imparting a sli ing movement to the slide 22, relatively to the plate 16, the apertures in the -slide 22 can be brought into registration with the apertures on one portion of the plate 16 it being understood that there are two sets of apertures in the plate 16, one set being immediately above the opening to the compartment 15 and the other set being immediately above the compartment 15n of the container 10. Thus by operating the slide 22 as mentioned, the slide can be moved so that the apertures thereof will register with the set of apertures over the compartment 15a, the slide 22 being also movable so that the apertures therein will not register with the set of apertures over the compartment 15a, thus closing the compartment and preventing the condiment therein from bein spilled therefrom. To properly positiont eplate 16 with respect to the ring 17 that portion of the ring that is not provided with the groove 20 is adapted to receive between the iiange 18 thereof and the plate 16, a semi-circular washer 24, the mentioned washer being of the same thickness asthe slide 22 so that the horizontal plane of the ring 17 will'be parallel to the horizontal plane of the plate 16. A threaded collar 25, provided with a circular flange 26, is now arranged so that the upper end of the collar will abut against the under side of the plate 16, the lower end or ange 18 of the ring 17 being then crim ed to pass beneath the circular flange 26 o the collar 25, thus retaining the collar 25 in engagement with the plate 16,l the threaded portion of the collar 25 being adapted to engage the threads on the upper end of the container 10. Ends 27 of the pintle 28 are secured to the upper side of the ring 17, the pintle 28 being mounted to extend diametrically over the plate 16 and spaced therefrom, the said pintle being mounted between the sets of apertures in the plate and provided between the ends with a reduced portion 29 having a spring 30 mounted mto encircle the same, a closure 31 being mounted to partially encircle the pintle 28 the said c osure being provided'with integral closure wings 32, 32"", one end of the spring 30 being secured to the pintle 28 and the other end thereof being mounted to extend'into an opening in the wing 32, the said wing being slightly oiset from the body of the closure 31, as shown in Fig. 3. The wings 32, 32"L are semi-circular in shape and the peripheries of the wings are slightly less than the periphery of the flange 18 of the ring 17 the spring 30, mounted as mentioned, being adapted to normally retain the wing 32 in engagement with the upper side of the plate 16 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 so that when the wing 32 is disposed as mentioned, the wing 32" will be out of engagement with the slide 22 and will extend vertically upward at substantially right angles tothe wing 32, a suitable handle 33 being formed on the outer end of the wing 32a. The under sides of the wings 32, 32a are provided with pins 34, 34, the pms 34 being adapted to extend through one set of apertures in' the plate 16 when the wing 32 is in` closed position and the pins 34: of the wing 32 being adapted to extend through the apertures in the' slide 22 and the other set of apertures in the plate 16 when the wing 32'? is in closed position, the-slide 22 being at this time positioned so that the apertures therein will register with the set of apertures in the plate 16, "over the compart ment 15, a slot 35 being formed in the wing 32a and adapted to receive therein the handle 23 when the wing 32EL is/in closed position. f
y Assuming that my'device is to be used as a salt and pepper shaker,-when the device is in normal position the wing 32 of the closure 31 willbe in closed position and engage the plate 16, while the wing 32a of the closure 31 will be spaced from the slide 22, as shown in Fig. 3, the slide 22 at this time being 'arranged so that the apertures therein will not register with the set of apertures that is formed in the plate 16, over the compartment 15a. Now by inverting the container and unscrewing the base 12, the compartment 15 can be filled with salt and the compartment 15a with pepper, it being understood that the sets of apertures in the plate 16 are closed by the wing 32 and the slide 22, the pins 3410i the wing 32 being extended through one of the sets of apertures/in the plate. When the compartments 15 and 15"L have been properly filled with the mentioned condiments, the base 12 is rethreaded on thecontainer 10 and the container is again inverted. Now if a condiment holder is to be used almost constantly, the slide 22 is first moved so that the apertures therein will register with the set of apertures in the plate 16 over the compartment 15. If it is desired to sift salt from the container, the container is grasped and a pressure is exertedy on the handle`33 to move the wing 32 out of en` gagement with the plate 16 thus opening one of the sets of apertures therein, and consequently the ring 32al will swing downwardly so that the pins y34 thereof will extend through the apertures in the slide 22 and one of the sets of apertures in the plate 16 to close the same and prevent'the exit of the pepper in the, compartment 15a. Now by tilting the container the salt in the compart ment 15 can be sifted from the container in the usual manner and if it is then desired to make use of the pepper in the compartv mentl", the pressure on the handle 33 is released'and the action of the spring 30 will swing the closure 31 so that the wing 32 will engage the plate 16, thus causing t e wing 32a'to move out of engagement with the slide 22and as the apertures inthe slide 22 register with vthe aperture'sover the compartment 15, when the container is tilted, the
pepper in the compartment 15a can be sifted therefrom as will be readily understood. Thus, it will be seen that with the provision of the closure 31, one of the condiments in the container 10 can be lsifted therefrom without permitting the other condiment to sift from the container at the same time or in any manner causing an intermngling of the condiments within the container. By providing the slide 22, when the container is not usedconstantly, the slide 22 can be operated to close the set of apertures over the compartment 15a and as the wing 32 nor-v mally closes the Set v,of apertures over the compartment 15, the contents of the compartments'l, 15* will be well protected from moisture that may be contained in the atmosphere. v
In Fig. 6 I disclose a modified form of container, embodying a container 40, the interior of which is multi-sided with the apex of adjacent sides of one side of the container together with the apex of adjacent sides of the opposing sides of the container forming-guides to slidably receive a partition 41, similar to the partition 14, it being understood that the guide lugs 19 on the under side of the plate 16 are dlspensed with when the container 40, shown in Fig. 6, is employed in'connectionwith the cap 11. Thus with the container 40, shown in F1 6, the partition 41 can be inserted in varlous positions therein as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6 it being simply necessary to mount the partition 41 within the container 40 so that one of the sets of apertures in the plate 16 will be on one side of the artition 41 and the other set of apertures 1n the plate 16 will be on the other side of the partition 41, thus preventing the different condiments on both sides of the partition from mixing, it being understood that the cap 11 is preferably used in connection with the container 40 With the various parts of the cap operative in the same manner as described heretofore, when the cap 16 was used in connection with the container 10.
I claim In combination with a container having the ends thereof o en, a partition for slidable reception in t e said container, a base for removable connection with the container to close the lower end thereof, a cap for removable connection With the upper end of the container, a perforated plate forming a part of the said cap and extending across the opening in the upper end of the container, a closure mounted to swing on the cap, wings forming parts of the said closure and projecting therefrom at right angles, pins projecting from the under sides of the said wings to depend through perforations in the said plate, a perforated slide movable on the said plate to cover one portion thereof, and a handle for moving the said slide so that the perforations thereof will register with the perforations in the mentioned ortion of the plate when the pins on one o the saidwings extend through the perforations in another portion of the said plate.
