Specification of Letters Patent.
Eatented May 18, 1915.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, EUGENE L. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the village of lllarren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Improved Envelop-Openers, of which the following vis a clear, full, and eX- act description.
rlhe object of this invention is to provide a simple, efficient and economical envelop opener of the shear type so that an envelop may be fed to the knife and the knife cut off just enough of the envelop to include the double fold of the paper forming the edge without the possibility of cutting any inclosure within the same.
The scope of my invention will be pointed out in the claims.

Fig. lis a section on line ,Ll-4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section showing the position of an envelop against the cutter at the beginning of the cut before the envelop is pushed back. Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view of the shear edges upon insertion of an envelop. Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic plan of the shear edges at the completion of the cut.
[is shown in the drawings, 1 is the envelop table, 2 is the waste box of a casting to which, on 3, there is pivoted the cutter arm el. carrying the shear-blade 5 and provided with an operating handle or knob 6. Springs 7, acting on plungers 8, tend to hold the reciprocating cutter in the position in Fig. 1. A stop 9 striking against the endewall l0 of the receptacle 2 limits the upward throw of the cutter. The movable shear blade, as particularly shown in Fig. 3, has its cutting edge 11 on an oblique line, there being an extension l2 from its lower most point which at all times is below the meeting edge of the stationary cutter 13. immediately below the oblique cutting edge 11 of the shear-blade 5 is a beveled portion 11i so that upon inserting an envelop, particularly one that may be bulky and readily pushed into position so that the shear edge might cut the contents, the beveled surface 14 will push the envelop away from the movable cutter until only the eXtreme edge of the envelop will be subject to the cutting edge 11 when it meets the stationary cutter 18. The stationary cutter 13 is freely mounted at the end of a rod 14a and its upper edge is always held pressed against the upper knife 1l, in close relation with the beveled surface lfl by springs 15, as shown.
lVhile one preferred form of the cutter has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that numerous changes may be made without departing from the invention.
l claim as my invention:
1. An envelop cutter, comprising a stationary rigid frame embodying a stationary table portion constituting a support for the envelop, and a waste receptacle in rear of said table portion, a reciprocatory knife member fulcrumed on said frame at the rear of said waste receptacle and bearing an upper blade removed from and approximately parallel to its fulcrum, a lower knife blade on the frame disposed in a substantially upright position at the back of the table portion and tiltable so as to carry its upper edge transversely toward and from the reciprocatory blade, and springs at the table side of the lower knife blade for pressing the same against the rcciprocatory blade.
2. An envelop cutter, comprising a frame embodying a support for the envelop, a lower knife mounted on the frame, and a reciprocatory knife having an oblique cutting ledge and a downwardly and rearwardly beveled gage surface beneath said edge operative to push the envelop outward beneath the cutting edge of the reciprocatory knife as the latter descends.
