AMANDA C. HEIMBUECHER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May a, 1915.
Application filed May 16, 1914. Serial No. 838,995.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMANDA C. HEIM- nu'no'r-rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in receptacles of the type particularly designed for receivinghats and has for its primary object to provide such a receptacle that is so arranged, that articles placed within may be removed without necessitating the removal of the lid at the top of the receptacle thus enabling the positioning of a number of flat boxes containing hats or the like upon a shelf within a store or stock room, it being only necessary to open one of the sides of the receptacle to remove the article therefrom.
Another object of importance is to pro vide a receptacle which comprises a removable flanged lid or cover and a hinged side wall, said cover or lid being secured to the receptacle, said side wall being arranged to be swung into open position to allow positioning or removal of articles within the receptacle.
Another object of importance is to provide novel means to open the hinged side wall of the receptacle, said means serving as a tie cord and being permanently secured to the hinged side wall so that it may be passed once around the receptacle after the lid is placed thereon to hold the receptacle in assembled position.
Another object is to provide a receptacle of the character described that is preferably formed of cardboard or the like, may be manufactured cheaply, is light and strong, and so arranged as to be of great service in stores wherein receptacles are placed one upon another upon a shelfor like support.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.
l/Vith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved receptacleshowing the hinged side in open position and the lid in secured position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through my improved receptacle showing the same in assembled and closed position. Fig. 3 is plan view of the blank of which the body of the receptacle is formed, and Fig. 4: is plan view of the blank of which the lid or cover for the receptacle is formed.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates the bottom wall of my receptaclehaving formed integral therewith side walls 2 that are arranged on three of the edges of the bottom and secured to each otherrin any suitable manner. A flap 3 is hinged to the bottom wall 1 and is formed of approximately the same size as the side walls 2. Thisflap is formed integral preferably and is reinforced at its hinged point with the bottom by means of a preferably fabric strip 4. A tongue 5 is formed along the outer longitudinal edge of the hinged flap 3, and is designed to extend at right angles to the flap inwardly with relation to the bottom wall 1.
A lid or cover designated 6 as an entirety, and consisting of a body 7 having dependingflanges 8 formed on three of the edges thereof is designed to fit upon the receptacle with the flanges 8 overlapping the side walls 2 thereof. The edge of the body of the lid 6 is disposed adjacent to that end of the receptacle at which the hinged flap 3 is arranged.
The flap 3 is designed to close the open side of the receptacle when the lid 6 is placed thereon and the disposal of the edge of the receptacle not provided with a depending flange 8, at the end of the receptacle to which the flap 3 is secured, enables the positioning of the tongue 10 so that it engages at its upper face the inner face of the body 7 of the lid as shown in Fig. 2 in the drawings.
I provide openings 9 in the opposed side walls 2 that are designed to receive tie cords 10 and 11. The tie cords 10 and 11 are knotted at one end and inserted from the inside of the receptacle through the openings 9 and then brought upon the top of the lid and knotted or tied to each other as at 12 to secure the lid in place. The openings 9 are arranged preferably'just below the free edges of the depending flanges 8.
Openings 13 are'formed inthe tongue 5 and have inserted therethrough a cord or other suitable flexible element 14. The cenportion of the cord which is arranged adjacent to the openings 13 as described and the cord is then passed through from the inside of the receptacle, an opening 15 being formed in the central portion of the flap 3. It will be readily seen that the cord is accessible exteriorly of the receptacle so that persons by pulling the cord may readily open the receptacle at one side thereof and the lid will assume the position as shown in Fig. 1 in the drawings.
As shown in Fig. 2 when the tongue and liap are in closed position, the cord is passed around the receptacle once and knotted upon the top thereof as at 16. This arrangement securely holds the receptacle in closed position and enables easy opening of the receptacle, as it is only necessary to grasp that portion of the cord which is arranged adj acent to the flap 3 and communicate a pull to the same to eii'ect the opening of the flap.
The cord 14: or ilexible element is knotted as at 17 to prevent pulling of the tongue 5 out of right angularly extending position with relation to the flap 3. The knot 17 acts as a stop in being arranged between the secured end of the flexible element with relation to the tongue and the flap so that a pull when communicated to the flexible element will not derange the tongue. By this arrangement it will also be seen that by grasping the cord 14: and pulling the same so that the tongue 5 and knot 17 will assume the position shown in Fig. 2, the operator may readily insert the tongue in position as shown in Fig. 2 in an expeditious manner.
It will be readily seen with reference to the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that I have provided an extremely simple and highly useful receptacle that will enable storing of large numbers of hats or the like in receptacles of the character described, one upon the other in stores or store rooms as it is only necessary to open one of the sides of the receptacle to gain access to the interior thereof.
In practice, 1 have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.
What is claimed is A receptacle comprising a bottom, side and end walls, one end and the upper sides of said receptacle being entirely open, a flap hinged to the edge of the bottom wall at the open end thereof, a lid for the upper open side of said receptacle, a tongue formed on the free longitudinal edge of the flap and being normally extended inwardly at right angles to the flap, a flexible'element secured to the tongue, extended through the central part of the flap and arranged to be wound about the receptacle and said flexible element having a stop formed thereon intermediate its ends at the part thereof that is disposed between the tongue and opening in the flap through which the flexible element passes whereby the tongue is prevented being pulled inwardly against the inner face of the flap upon a pull on the flexible ele ment.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of'two witnesses.
AMANDA C. HEIMBUECHER.
