Be it known that I, JUDsoN E. PETTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Wheeled Scraper, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in wheeled Scrapers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of wheeled scrapers and to enable the same to do better work with less power, and t0 provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive machine of strong and durable construction, equipped with a scraper blade and adapted to be adjusted to set the blade in a horizontal position, or at a lateral inclination in either direction, and capable also of permitting an adjustment of the scraper blade to vary the depth of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wheeled scraper of this character designed for ditching and grading roads and provided with a laterally adjustable auxiliary side wheel adapted to be arranged in longitudinal alinement with a main side wheel, and capable of being set in an extended position beyond the adjacent side of the machine t0 arrange the samefor cutting shoulders.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a plan view of a wheeled scraper, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the opposite side of the machine. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the front portion of the machine, illustrating the arrangement of the central arm to which is connected the operating mechanism for raising and lowering the blade with respect to the frame. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, illustrating the arrangement of the gearing for adjusting the auxiliary side wheel. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the front connecting portions of the draft chains.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a main frame provided with a platform 2 and composed of spaced side bars or beams and a diagonally or obliquely arranged front bar or beam, the front portion of the main frame being tapered, as clearly illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings. The machine is equipped at the front with an obliquely disposed scraper blade 3, arranged in spaced relation with the front edge of the main frame and extending laterally beyond the sides thereof and connected with the sides of the main frame by longitudinally disposed oscillatory arms 4 and 5, pivotally mounted on the frame at the rear ends by bolts 6 or other suitable fastening devices, and provided at their front ends with oblique attaching portions 7 arranged at an acute angle to the arms 4 and 5 and bolted or otherwise secured t0 the scraper blade at the rear face thereof and at a point midway between the upper and lower edges of the same. The oblique attaching portions 7 extend above and below the arms 4 and 5 and are curved to conform to the configuration of the scraper blade. The pivots 6 of the arms 4 and 5 preferably consist of bolts, which are supported at their outer portions by bearing arms or braces 8, extending longitudinally of the main frame at the side edges thereof and having rear attaching portions bolted or otherwise secured to the said frame, the front portions being spaced from the sides of the frame to provide intervening spaces for the reception of the pivotal arms 4 and 5. The bearing or bracing arms 8 are provided intermediate of their ends with olfsetting bends, and the offset front portions are provided with perforations through which the pivots 6 pass.
The scraper blade 3, which is continuously curved from top to bottom, presents a concave front face and preferably consists of a main section provided at a point below its center with a longitudinal bend 9 offsetting the lower portion of the main section from the arcuate plane of the upper portion and forming a seat for a lower section 10, which is fitted against the front shoulder formed by the bend 9. The bend also forms a rear projecting shoulder against which are fitted the lower ends of the oblique attaching portions of the arms 4 and 5. The lower section 10, which is provided with a lower cutting edge 11, is suitably secured to the lower portion of the main section and in practice it is designed to be readily removable to enable it to be sharpened when worn and to be replaced by a new section when necessary.
The scraper blade is tilted laterally in either direction by means of side wheels 12 and 13, located immediately in rear of the projecting end portions of the scraper blade and mounted on and carried by crank axles 14 and 15, journaled in suitable bearings 16 and 17 and adapted to be rotated to oscillate outer crank arms to raise and lower the frame with respect to the wheels 12 and 13. The crank" arm of the axle 14 extends forwardly from the axle, while the crank arm of the axle 15 extends rearwardly, the outer side wheels being located in different transverse planes. The crank axles 14 and 15 are provided with outer crank arms, which terminate in spindles to receive the wheels 12 and 13, and they are provided at their inner ends with upwardly extending arms 1S and 19 connected, respectively, with operating levers 20 and 21 by links 22 and 23. The operating levers 20 and 21 are pivotally mounted on the main frame within easy reach from a rear seat 24 provided for the accommodation of the operator for controlling the mechanism of the machine, which is also provided at the front with a seat for the accommodation of the driver. The links 22 and 23 extend longitudinally of the machine and the operating levers 20 and 21 are equipped with dogs or detents 26 and 27 for engaging curved rack bars or latch segments 28 and 29 for securing the crank axles of the main side wheels 12 and 13 in their adjustment. By adjusting the crank axles, either side of the machine may be raised or lowered with respect to the other. The side wheel 12 is located in advance of the side wheel 13, and the machine is equipped at a point opposite the rear main side wheel 13 with an auxiliary side wheel 30, located in rear of the front main side wheel 12, as clearly illustrated in vFig. 1 of the drawings, and mounted on a spindle 31 of a laterally adjustable bar or axle 32 provided at one of its side edges with teeth 33 and constituting a rack, which is engaged by a horizontal pinion 34 adapted to be rotated for sliding the rack bar axle outwardly and inwardly. The rack bar axle is arranged in suitable transversely alined guides 35 and the pinion, which meshes with the teeth of the rack bar axle is fixed to a vertical shaft 3G, mounted in a suitable illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The
auxiliary side wheel 30 is designed to be arranged directly in rear of the adjacent side wheel 12 when the machine is to be employed for ditching. In arranging the Inachine for cutting a side ditch, the left hand wheel is lowered and the right hand wheel is raised, while the auxiliary wheel 30 occupies a position adjacent to the main frame. When it is desired to arrange the machine for cutting shoulders, the auxiliary side wheel is extended laterally, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and it serves to guide or hold the machine in proper position during such cutting operation.
The scraper blade is connected at its end portions with a pair of side beams 39 and 40, designed to be constructed of metal or other suitable material and provided with arched portions 41 and 42 formed by curving the beams longitudinally and extending over the top of the scraper blade, as clearly illustrated in F ig. 2 of the drawings. The beams are provided with downwardly curved rear portions 43 and 44, conforming to the configuration of and fitting against the rear convex face of the scraper blade and provided with laterally extending attaching flanges 45, which are bolted or otherwise secured to the scraper blade, whereby the latter is rigidly fastened directly to the beams. The beams converge forwardly, the beam 39 at the right hand side of the machine being arranged substantially at right angles to the plane of the oblique scraper blade, while theJ beam 40 at the opposite end of the scraper blade is angular-ly bent at the upper edge of the scraper' blade and extends forwardly from the same at an acute angle thereto toward the other beam. The beams 39 and 40 are provided at their front ends with clevises 46 to which are secured the rear ends of forwardly converging chains 47, which are connected at their front ends by a suitable device 48 for engaging a doubletree (not shown). By this construction and arrangement, the draft is applied directly to the scraper blade and it operates to hold the blade in the ground and the arrangement renders the machine more effective and enables the same to be operated with less power than when the draft is applied to the frame on which a scraper may be mounted. The right hand beam 39, which is connected with the scraper blade at a point in advance of the left hand beam, is substantially regularly curved while the left hand beam, which is attached at a point in rear of the right hand beam, is provided with an extended front portion arranged at a slight inclination and extending downwardly from the arched portion of the beam. The beams are preferably flanged, as shown, but may be of any other preferred form.
'l`he scraper blade is adjusted upwardly and downwardly by means of a central front lever 4S) pivotally mounted on the main frame and connected by a link 50 with an approximately central arm 5l of the scraper blade. The arm 5l of the scraper blade, which is preferably composed of spaced sides formed integral with a curved attaching plate or portion 5'2, fits the rear face of the blade and is bolted or otherwise secured to the same with its lower end abutting the rear shoulder of the bend 9. The front lever is equipped with a dog or detent 53 for engaging a curved rack bar or latch segment 54 to secure the scraper blade in its adjustment. The adjustment of the scraper blade enables it to be set at the desired depth and also to be arranged clear of the ground.
The frame of the machine is provided at the front and back with approximately U- shaped foot rests 55 and 56, each constructed of a single piece of rod metal bent to form spaced sides and a connecting transverse portion, the terminals of the metal being flattened to provide attaching portions 57 and 58, which are bolted or otherwise secured to the upper face of the platform. T he front foot rest 55 is arranged in advance of the seat 25 and its attaching portions 57 are secured to the main frame adj acent to the front oblique edge thereof. The rear foot rest 56 is located at one side of the rear seat 24 immediately in rear of the gearing for adjusting the auxiliary side wheel.
What is claimed is l. A scraper of the class described including a main frame, an obliquely arranged scraper blade extending across the front of the main frame and carried by the latter, front and rear main side wheels arranged at opposite sides of the frame in different transverse planes and located directly in rear of the terminal portions of the scraper blade, crank axles mounted on the main frame and carrying the said wheels, and an auxiliary side wheel mounted on the main frame opposite the rear main side wheel and adjustable laterally of the main frame to arrange it directly in rear of the front side wheel and also at a point beyond the longitudinal plane of the same.
2. A scraper of the class described comprising a main frame, an obliquely arranged scraper blade extending across the front of the main frame and carried by the latter, front and rear main side wheels arranged at opposite sides of the frame in different transverse planes and located in rear of the terminal portions of the scraper blade, and an auxiliary side wheel mounted on the main frame opposite the rear main side wheel and adjustable laterally of the main frame to arrange it in rear of the front main side wheel and also at a point beyond the longitudinal plane of the same.

A scraper of the class described comprising a main frame including a platform, an obliquely arranged blade inclined to the line of travel and extending across the front of the main frame, said blade being pivotally connected to the main frame so as to swing upwardly and downwardly, means mounted on the main frame and operable from the platform for adjusting the scraper blade upwardly and downwardly with respect to the main frame, wheels supporting the main frame and adjustable to tilt the same and the scraper blade laterally, and draft beams secured to and extending forwardly from the scraper blade at opposite sides of the scraper and carried by the said scraper blade in the adjustment thereof.

A scraper of the class described comprising a main frame including a platform, an obliquely arranged blade inclined to the line of travel and extending across the front of the main frame, said blade being pivotally connected to the main frame so as to swing upwardly and downwardly, means mounted on the main frame and operable from the platform for adjusting the scraper blade upwardly and downwardly with respect to the main frame, front and rear main side wheels arranged at opposite sides of the main frame in different transverse planes and located directly in rear of the terminal portions of the scraper blade, crank axles mounted on the main frame and carrying the said wheels, means for partially rotating the crank axles for tilting the main frame and the scraper blade laterally, and draft beams secured to and extending forwardly from the scraper blade at opposite sides of the scraper and carried by the said scraper blade in the adjustment thereof.

A scraper of the class described comprising a wheeled main frame including a platform having a diagonally arranged front edge inclined to the line of travel, brackets mounted on the platform at the side edges thereof adjacent to the front edge of the same, an obliquely arranged scraper blade extending across the front of the main frame, brackets secured to the scraper blade, means for hinging the brackets of the scraper blade to the brackets of the platform to permit the scraper blade to swing upwardly and downwardly, and draft beams secured to and extending forwardly from the scraper blade at opposite sides of the scraper and carried by the said blade in the adjustment thereof.
6. A scraper of the class described comprising a main frame including a platform,
an obliquely arranged blade inclined to the line of travel and extending across the front of the main frame, said blade being pivotally connected to the main frame so as to swing upwardly and downwardly, means mounted on the main frame and operable from the platform for adjusting the scraper blade upwardly and downwardly with respect to the main frame, Wheels supporting the main frame and adjustable to tilt the same and the scraper blade laterally, spaced forwardly converging draft beams arching the scraper blade and having curved downwardly eX- tending rear portions secured to the back of the scraper blade at the end portions thereof,
the draft.l beam at the front end of the scraper blade being arranged substantially at right angles to the said blade and the draft beam at the other end thereof being arranged aty an obtuse angle to the scraper 20 blade, and flexible connections secured to and extending forwardly from the front ends of the draft beams.
