LAVATOBY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
Application filed July 10, 1914. Serial No. 850,188.
ful Improvements in Lavatories, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wash basins, tubs, sinks, trays and the like and especially with reference to the provision of improved means for flushing the waste pipe or duct thereof and for preventing overflow in case the supply of faucet or faucets should be left running, the invention consisting in the construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The accompanying drawing is a vertical sectional view of a stationary wash stand or lavatory provided with waste and overflow devices in accordance with my invention.
For the purposes of this specification a basin is shown at 1, provided with a back 2.
My invention is applicable not only to a basin but to a tub, tray, sink or any other equivalent device and I would have it understood that I do not limit myself in this particular.
In accordance with my invention I provide a waste duct 3 which leads from the bottom of the basin and is formed with a trap 4. A plug or stopper 5 is provided for the upper end of the waste duct. A vent duct 6 leads from an elevated point and discharges into the waste duct at a point near its intake end, as at 7. This waste duct is here shown as extending up through the back and as leading from the bottom of a soap cup 8. An overflow duct 9 is also provided in accordance with my invention and leads from the bottom of the basin, its intake end being indicated at 10. This overflow duct is formed into a siphon 11, the shorter arm of the siphon being indicated at 12 and the longer arm, thereof being indicated at 13. The siphon discharges into the waste duct as at 14 at a point between the trap 4 and the vent duct 6. The siphon extends up at one side of the basin to a point a suitable distance below the level of its top. A drainage duct 15 is also provided, which is of somewhat smaller diameter and which connects the horizontal lower portions of the intake and discharge arms of the siphon as shown. A faucet of usual type is inclicated at 16.
The operation of my invention is as fol lows :Ordinarily the waste is discharged from the basin through the duct 3 by opening or removing the plug 5. The vent duct 6 prevents siphonic action of the trap 4 and hence the trap maintains an effective water seal in the waste duct. In the event that water should be left running from the fancent or faucets and the plug 5 would be left in place water will flow from the basin into the siphon 11 and rise inthe arm 12 thereof with the level of the water in the basin and as the said siphon has its upper end somewhat below the level of the top of the basin the siphon will act to discharge water from i the basin and prevent the latter from overflowing, the siphon discharging into the waste duct 3. At the initial operation of the siphon water rises therefrom in the waste duct so as to place the air above the discharge pipe 14 of the siphon and the latter will operate until the contents of the basin have been discharged when the vent duct willagain admit air to the waste duct 3. Owing to the provision of the duct 15 which connects the arms of the siphon the latter will be entirely drained and kept normally empty. The vent duct which leads. from the soap cup also serves to carry ofi' waste from the latter.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A basin or the like, a waste duct leading therefrom, a vent duct leading from the upper portion of thewaste duct and an overflow duct leading from the basin and discharging into the waste duct at a point below the vent duct, said overflow duct forming a siphon, and being provided with a drainage duct connecting its arms.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH A. KAVANAGH.
